    1. Kiki, don't just copy and paste the article--go through the intellectual process of discussing the ramifications of the event, or how it made you feel reading about it. It's a terrible tragedy, but to just post the article isn't doing this blog justice :)

  2. The article I read this week was from NewsELA concerning musicians gigging across the nation on a super fast Internet. You can find the story here: https://newsela.com/articles/music-lightspeed/id/6293/

This is intriguing to me on two fronts: One, who wouldn’t love faster Internet? The U.S. has some of the slowest Internet speeds in the developed world; two, as a musician myself, whose friends have moved to far away places, I would love to be able to jam again—in real time—with those people.

According to a study by Ookla, the United States is 31st in the world in terms of Internet speed. Quite frankly, this is unacceptable—we pay almost twice as much for Internet access as the countries that rank ahead of us for speed, but we get less for our money.

I hate to sound like someone who is complaining, but there is serious steam in our nation’s legislator to re-categorize the Internet as a utility rather than a service. Internet access is a wonderful tool for learning, connecting, creating, and helping throughout the world, and fast, affordable Internet should be a priority of any governing body. The issue of “Net Neutrality” is extremely salient here, but it doesn’t deal with the issues raised by the article, so I’ll skive off of discussing that.

Speaking of creativity, the second idea of being able to gig in real time across the country is amazing. I’m reminded of the 2000s band The Postal Service, who sent each other cassettes of their parts through the USPS (hence the name of the band) to put together an entire album. But this process, of course, took a very long time to complete, considering they had to wait on the “snail mail” process. Imagine the creative possibilities for musicians to play together no matter where they are in the world…Imagine the educative possibilities; the scientific possibilities. We do have technologies available right now, but they are sometimes buggy, laggy, and a slave to poor Internet connections. I’m excited about the future of our technology.

  3. Girl, 12, shot as police confront alleged intruder

On Tuesday, there was a shooting in north Phoenix that wounded a young girl and a mysterious shooter. This mysterious shooter happened to have a relationship with the young girls’ sister, a 14-year old. The police got a call from the 14-year old saying that there was an unwanted man in their home. This man was standing on their doorstep and sending her texts. Police got other calls about the same man in the same area around the same time. The police arrived and the found the man and he refused the officers commands by walking away. This man walked to the front door of the house and an officer shot. Unfortunately he shot through the door, where the little sister was waiting. This is how the little girl got shot and it is also how the shooter got injured. I think that this is just bad communication because the girl should have been nowhere near the door and the police should have made sure of that. This is just one of those stories where you cant believe this could happen. This is just very unfortunate for the 12-year old girl. I think that the police should have used a different method to deal with the 18-year old man.

    1. This just isn't very shocking anymore. I'm honestly tired of hearing stories like this & sick of people committing acts of insanity. Yes, it is sad that someone so young fell victim to this horrible man, but stories like this are all over the place and it's just irritating and annoying.

    2. I agree with you, Kylie on the fact that the girl should not have been near the door. This is a very bad situation in which a police officer had to make a call in an attempted hostage situation to save the lives of the parties involved. The police officer made the right call as he may have injured a bystander but, he saved their lives at the same time which deserves the utmost gratitude and recognition.

      Delete
    3. I also agree with you Kylie, that the 12-year old girl should not have been near the door. She should have been as far away from the door as possible since there was an unwanted man behind it. She got shot because of a mistake that the police made at the scene, which I think is why they should have handled the situation differently; in a way that nobody innocent would have gotten injured.

      Delete
    4. I agree completely. I think both the police officer and the little girl were in the wrong. She should not have been anywhere never that door and that man. But also, the police officer shouldn’t have tried to shoot the guy. He could’ve shot at the ground as a warning instead of shooting straight ahead. Because the officer was reckless, he shot through the door and almost killed a young girl! At least nobody got injured, though. I think with everything going on now-a-days, people don’t trust in the police anymore. But it isn’t just the officers fault, you can see both sides. You can’t just blame the officer for shooting the little girl; she shouldn’t have been near there in the first place.

    5. I agree this was merely a horrible accident, but I also agree with Michael's view on this subject - but say that just because it is rather old news for accidental shooting it should not just simply be put off and forgotten (although this is not what Delgado was implying). There was probably little the police could have done, but what little they could have done could have saved a life. I hope that the family can get over her death and that the girl rests peacefully.

      Delete
    6. I agree. This is a horrible incident and you're all right that the girl should have never been near that door. She should have been hiding in her room or something. I mean I feel horrible for the families loss and I hope the soul of this girl will rest in peace. Though, the police should have done something a little more, maybe trying to save this girl's life (as Alexia had implied).

      Delete
    7. That’s crazy to think about. A 12 year old girl that thought she was doing nothing wrong and that she wasn’t threatened at all just gets shot through the door. I know if I was her I would have felt safe on that side of the door rather then the other. Its honestly just an incident that was all caused because a man at the door was being annoying and irritating to the people around him. If he didn’t act like he did, no one would have gotten shot.

      Delete
    8. This just gives you a glimpse into the everyday life of a police officer. It's really unfortunate that the 12 year old girl was caught in the middle of it but these are the kind of decisions that police officers have to make all the time and even though one was killed he most likely saved everyone else from being harmed. I think police need to be appreciated a little more for the things they do.

      Delete
    9. If you are a trained police officer you should at no time fire at someone just for walking away because it will end much worse then intended for both parties. The cop should’ve put the effort in and chased him and if he refused to at most use his Taser on the 18 year old who has no right to be messing with a 14 year old. Overall I believe this is a cop error and should’ve never happened.

      Delete
    10. I agree, that is just a matter of miscommunication and just being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Granted the police officer can't really do much in this situation because the guy could of shot at any moment and either way, the girl would either be killed or injured.

      Delete
    11. I think this makes so much sense, because the officer should have said step away from the door to those girls. Maybe even just tazzered the boy. The officer shouldn't have shot the boy anyways so i think both are at fault.

      Delete
    12. First of all, getting involved with someone way older than you when your 14 should be right in the first place. None of this would have happened in the first place if she wouldnt have been so idiotic and immature. Second of all, the little girl should have been somewhere other than the door if the 14 year old knew the guy was out there in the first place and also where the parents were when this situation was called for did not state in the parragraph above. As for the police they need better aim honestly, shooting at a door personally the police man should not have shot but instead called for back up or maybe for everyone to steer clear of the door way before he ridiculously shot at the man without warning or say. Which should not be aloud in my oppinion.

      Delete
    13. I do agree with you about how there was bad communication. The girls should’ve known better to be as far away from the door as possible and if not, the police should have been 100% sure that they weren’t near it. I believe that there was a better way to handle the situation. I think that both the older sister and the police are to blame. The 14-year old should’ve taken responsibility of her younger sister and kept her away from the 18-year old, but I do not think it was necessary for the police officer to shoot towards the intruder.

      Delete
    14. Logically, if a boy is texting your daughter and is standing outside your house, you should have a moment of thought for the safety of everyone in your household. Leadership is often a necessity in situations like these. I feel that in such an alarming situation, I would’ve been in a dark, closed off area until the police arrested the intruder. In school we do lock down drills as a precautionary measure to avoid any injuries in the event that an armed hostile enters our campus. Application is key here, when in an intimidating situation, always assume the worst case scenario and never assume that the police are all perfect, because they are also people, and they also make mistakes. Therefore, independent safety requires thought and precautions, but this should be your priority as a citizen, just as a policeman should be cautious with a weapon and take necessary safety precautions.

      Delete
    15. Though everyone was partly at fault in this situation, the officer could have tased the man the moment he walked towards the door instead of choosing to shoot him. Why are some cops so eager to pull the trigger when there could've be a simpler, safer way to handle the situation. This could have prevented the 12-year old's death. Though it is tragic, she should've known not stand by the door when her sister made a call to the police about a strange man at the house.

      Delete
    16. This are the situations that could have been easily avoided. The 14-year old had no business talking to the 18-year. Why would the boy be standing out side for the cops to be called. Or just if the cops would have taken more caution. Yes the little girl shouldn't have been that close to the door knowing the situation, but the police should have been more careful.

  4. CNN - Pakistan militants: Children's massacre was to avenge army strikes:

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) -- As Pakistan started three days of national mourning Wednesday, the Taliban said they targeted a school that mostly admits soldiers' children because the students aspired to follow in their fathers' footsteps and target militants. Terrorists ambushed the school in Peshawar on Tuesday, explosives strapped to their bodies, and burst into an auditorium filled with students taking exams. They sprayed bullets rapidly, killing 145 people. Of those, 132 were children, authorities said.

It's a tragedy, there were kids who lived at least but, why?

    1. These terrorist attacks are quite frightening. You're never going to know if we're going to be next, or someone we know is going to get hurt, maybe even killed. And we aren't much better. It's definitely not morally right here, but the military we had tended to torture and bully the people in the middle east. Maybe we didn't use bombs, or shoot schools, but I honestly think our military over there were acting like mild terrorists.

    2. We basically are fighting fire with fire. No one is any better than the other because our soldiers are basically being ordered to do almost the same thing the terrorists are doing to us, terrorizing innocent people. How do you think the innocent citizens of their country feel when our "soldiers" basically terrorize them. They're scared. Like us. As you said Delgado, we never know if we'll be next, or if someone we know and care about could be severely hurt or even killed. They think the same thing we do, because we're human. It isn't right for our "great" country to be saying they're in the right for what they do to the people of Pakistan, because they aren't. They're basically just as bad as the terrorists. No one is in the right here.

    3. There have been many terrorist attacks lately and its truly scary because you never know when something bigger may occur like on September 11th. Especially going after children who can't fight or defend themselves and have nothing to do with the reason the terrorists are attacking. I feel like aiming towards children is just the worst decision and it could end worse.

    4. These terrorists attacks have been happening way too often, i think the US need to come up with peace treaties to protect our allies, as well as the citizens. Terrorist attacks are targeted at innocent people. I have no idea who would want to do that to innocent lives but it is honestly sick

    5. I find it scary that these attacks are and have been happening. When they start involving children i think they should really start caring about civilians being harmed while this war is going on truly.

    6. Terrorism is becoming a regular occurrence in Pakistan. The Pakistani government should make law enforcement their top priority, because in situations such as these, I feel that there are too many groups who have no fear of being arrested. Although the Taliban is a more acknowledged terrorist group, others are watching to see the penalty these arsonists endure. Terrorism needs a more definite, and serious retribution.

    7. It's so scary that something like this can happen at any time. The Pakistani government needs to make a better effort to stop these attacks and protect its citizens more.

    8. When it comes to terrorist, everything is scary. They don't care who gets hurt just as long as they complete their mission. These people don't even think twice about killing child because they want to follow in their fathers footsteps. Terrorist are never good and when they bring helpless child into it they make things even worse. The government really needs to step up and take down these groups of horrible people.

  5. NBC Contact High Court: Nebraska and Oklahoma Sue Over Colorado Pot Legalization

Nebraska and Oklahoma requested to declare Colorado's legalization of pot unconstitutional. They believe that it violates the supremacy clause, stating federal laws trump state laws. Meaning if marijuana is illegal to federal law, states cannot legalize it alone. According to Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning states, "While Colorado reaps millions from the sale of pot, Nebraska taxpayers have to bear the cost." According to the U.S. Justice Department, Colorado does not have the proper resources to control and police all of the violations of the federal marijuana law. Oklahoma's Attorney General Scott Pruitt said Colorado's decision has hindered Oklahoma's anti-marijuana laws, causing concerns in its politics and people. However, Legal scholars believe that it is too early to determine how the Supreme Court will react to the situation.
I believe that Colorado should remain the way it is. Apparently, its general economy has gotten worse because of this situation, but a state should be allowed to publish their own laws. I understand about Federal laws, but it shouldn't be a big deal if no one else has a problem with it. I'm just hoping there will be some exception.

    1. If the marijuana law is being violated then the state should make changes to enforce the laws. Also I agree with you Michael on the opinion that a state should be allowed to publish their own laws. Just like the national government, each state has its own constitution. Also, just like the national government, each state makes its own laws and I believe that shouldn't change.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you, Emilia, and you, Michael. The states should be allowed to create the law, but they should be responsible for the control of it. Honestly, Nebraska and Oklahoma really need to just not worry about this. It's not a problem of theirs and if they are against marijuana, then the state legislators may keep it illegal there. If it turns out that the use of marijuana gets out of control and crime rate increases, then I believe it should be brought up in the government on possibly stepping in and either 1. making it harder to obtain the drug or 2. just get rid of the law if it causes this much trouble.

  6. The Islamic State (ISIS) is turning Christian churches in Iraq and Syria into dungeons and torture chambers. They are burning pictures and statues of God and saints as after stripping them of priceless artifacts to sell on the black market. They have stated a new goal to wipe out Christianity. This why they are crucifying all Christians, including children, as well as destroying churches and selling artifacts. The fact is, this group will stop at nothing to raise funds for its terrorist mission. So far, the terrorist group has sought to destroy religious groups that don't embrace its twisted and violent interpretation of Islam, and has already blown up several revered Christian sites and monuments. Christianity is believed to be practiced by just three percent of the population of Iraq. They lived in relative religious freedom while under Saddam Hussein's rule, but have faced persecution from Islamic State in the last two years. ISIS commits war crimes and engage in torture in violation of international law; and they also kill and threaten Christian, Jewish, and other religious communities. In short, ISIS is composed of religiously motivated psychopaths.

    1. I think it is horrific what ISIS is willing to do in order to spread their beliefs. They are using fear and violence to force their religion on everyone else. They have grown so much than what we previously expected. And it isn’t the religion, Islam, itself; it is ISIS’s way of interpreting it. They are using extreme methods to enact it. ISIS is torturing innocent people who only want to practice their religion in peace and violating the law. We can’t let this grow any further; we really need to find a way to stop these people.

      Delete
    2. This is crazy. ISIS is claiming they are committing theses actions in the name of Islam, but they are doing this just to gain fear and power because not only are they killing christians, but they are also killing muslims, including muslim children. I've heard that Islam was supposed to be the religion of peace, but how is that true if they are committing these acts?

      Delete
    3. Both Maddie and Micayla are right, this is crazy. As a Christian, myself, it's hard to accept what ISIS is doing. Panic and vehemence are being used in a way to get people to follow them and "join" these series of events. I'd agree that yeah, they have been growing more than we expected. How can one live in your own religious way of life, when your own life is under stake? I can't bear to stand by and allow this to happen. We need to step up to the plate for once and take action. What if the situation was vice versa and we're the ones going through this madness. Yeah, we'd want other countries or just someone to help us out. ISIS is very messed up and someone or something needs to straighten them out real quick.

  7. CNN: Mom fatally shot when son, 2, grabs gun from her purse in Walmart

A 29-year-old mother was fatally shot Tuesday in an Idaho Walmart when her 2-year-old son in the shopping cart grabbed a gun that was in her purse and shot her in an apparent accident. Detectives were investigating the scene and Walmart officials immediately shuttered the store in Hayden, said the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office.
The mother was identified by the sheriff's office as Veronica J. Rutledge of Blackfoot. At the time, the mother and son were shopping with other family members, authorities said. At a press conference, Miller said the mother was shopping at the back of the store in the electronics department. "It appears that the victim brought several of her children here to do some shopping after the holidays," Lt. Stu Miller told reporters in the parking lot. "The child looks like to be sitting in the shopping cart with the purse while the female victim was shopping." "Here it is around the holidays, just after Christmas and right before the New Year -- tragic, tragic accident," Miller said. "It's not a pleasant experience right now." The shooting occurred about 10:20 a.m. This incident could have been prevented if the gun was properly protected, if the mother had been keeping an eye on her child and belongings, and if the child was taught not to play with guns.

    1. It's very tragic how the mother was shot but in the son's defense, he is a 2 year old child and she shouldn't have had the gun in a baby's possession. It might have been an accident but she shouldn't have had a gun around close to a 2-year-old.

      Delete
    2. It's sad that the mother died, but this could've been avoided easily. The mother just could've kept a better watch on her son and gun, those are two very important things to watch. But I don't understand how a two year old would be able to pick up and shoot a gun.

      Delete
    3. This is horrible and really stupid. I don't understand why the mother would have a gun in her purse especially with her son nearby. Children are curious and they don't know any better so parents have to be more careful and cautious. This is just one of those stories where you just can't believe this could happen. This should not have happened at all and the gun should have been protected safely in the purse.

      Delete
    4. I have read this story and my jaw dropped from start to finish. I think it was kind of the mother's fault though because you shouldn't leave a GUN in a purse next to your CHILD. The number one thing that children do when they see something that they haven't seen before is to play with it. They are curious and will see what anything does. So the child shoots it maybe thinking that the gun was only a toy resulting the mother dead. It is very sad and I hope that other people will learn from the mistake.

      Delete
    5. Another idiotic person in this world. I know having a gun is self defense and its totally legal to have on in your posession but a child who does not know any better a while who probably cant even talk get can be able to get ahold of a gun that is in side of a purse. That is the most ridiculous thing i ever heard. Also doesnt guns usually have a saftey on it to prevent people who cant use it properally to get to it.

      Delete
    6. The first question to be asked is why did the women even have a gun in her purse in the first place? Also why would you bring it around your child knowing your child has no clue what it is and the harm it can cause. Although it is a tragic thing that happened and it's legal to have possession of a gun you should be aware of your whereabouts and know the right and wrong places to bring a gun. I think there should be things in grocery stores or stores in general that see what your carrying on you or in your purse. Just for the safety of yourselves and others around you.

      Delete
    7. I'd understand the feeling of safety while containing a gun in your purse while being able to be ready in the instance to defend for yourself, but more importantly, your own children/child. The problem is, if the woman was updated and informed on gun safety, the gun should've been on safety and never unattended with young, unexperienced children. Additionally, the purse should've been zipped closed and out of reach of the small child. The child may have seen dumb cartoons having animated characters shooting at each other and could've thought the gun was a toy and or was mocking the actions of the cartoon. In conclusion, I'd agree with Olivia. This kind of story would have to fall onto the mother's shoulders. There are multiple errors were she went wrong, but in all, I'm truly sorry for everyone's loss and praying the mother is in a better place as well as for the children and relatives bing mentally, physically and emotionally stable.

  8. Suicide of Transgender Teen Leelah Alcorn Sparks Emotional Debate- (http://www.people.com/article/leelah-alcorn-death-sparks-emotional-debate-parents-speak)

On December 28, transgender teen Leelah Alcorn commited suicide by walking into traffic. Her tragic death has caused the question to come up on how parents should react to their children coming out as trans, no matter the religion. Assigned male at birth, Leelah describes her life at home in a suicide note she posted to Tumblr. She explains how her parents are Christian and very religious, and refused to accept her being trans, saying that it was a phase and god made her a "boy" for a reason. She not only battled with denial from her parents, but also with depression. Despite her death and her note, her parents still refuse to use her proper pronouns and name, Leelah. I find it disgusting that even in her death, her parents still refuse to accept the fact that she is a woman. Even the media accepts her and uses the proper pronouns, but her parents still bury her in a suit, under the incorrect name, and say that they loved him very much and that he was "a good kid, a good boy." It is so important to accept transgender people, especially teens, because they are already stressed about being a teenager and going through high school. The last thing they need is to be denied of their proper gender.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's sad how most people can respect her and use the pronouns she wanted except her own parents. Your parents are supposed to support you, but Leelah's parents can't even do that. The saddest part is that this caused her to become depressed and commit suicide.

      Delete
    2. It breaks my heart knowing that people can't be who they want to be without being discriminated. Leelah was a beautiful person and her parents should have saw that in her instead of her being "different". They are supposed to support what she wants and what she likes that makes her happy not bully her into thinking that her only choice was to end her life and that is a perfect example of what I think of society, " If you are different, then you must be hated until you are like everyone else".

      Delete
    3. The fact that it came to this make it very saddening and unbelievable. I find it also incredibly rude of news reports how they felt the need to not use the pronouns leelah preferred as she had one point to make and the media simply only uses the fact that she ended her life.

      Delete
    4. Parents should support and love their children no matter even if they “go against their religion." Leelah's parents needed to understand the fact that she was not a recreation of themselves, but rather her own person with the right to make her own decisions on her identity. Do not bring a child into this world if you’re not willing to support them 100% of their personal decisions. It’s heartbreaking that the lack of acceptance from her own parents is what lead to her suicide and that even after that, they still can’t accept her. I’m glad to see at least the media is using the right pronouns and representing Leelah for who she really was. I hope she is resting in a better place and now all we can do is work towards her last wish of support and awareness of transgender rights.

  9. ‘Treated like cattle’: Yazidi woman sold, raped, enslaved by ISIS
In this article, ISIS kidnaps Yazidi woman and, basically, treats them like property. A woman named Jana was only 19 years old when ISIS came to her village last August. She stated that the jihadis demanded the members of her Yazidi religious minority convert to Islam and took their valuables. They also separated the men from the women. They shot the males older than 10 years old. Jana’s father and eldest brother died in this tragedy. Jana was then separated from the elder women and brought to Monsul where they are kept in a three- story building to wait and have ISIS members take them home. These women have been treated like cattle. Everything has been taken from them. They have been physically and sexually abused. ISIS has kidnapped more than 2,500 women. ISIS justifies doing all these things because it is “Islamic law”. I think it is a horrible thing to do even if they truly believe what they are doing is justified. The Kurdish people say they have rescued around 100 Yazidi women, but still thousands of women remain hostage or missing. The girl, Jana, after she was recued was deeply traumatized and was unable to show any emotion. Her mother and two brothers are still being held hostage. Dreams- taken away from these women; their families- gone. I couldn’t imagine being in that situation.

On January 4th, 2014, at 6:01 P.M. a plane was flying back to Mount Vernon, Illinois from Key West but crashed in Lyon County, Kentucky causing a family’s’ death except 7-year-old Sailor Gutzler. Sailor survived the plane crash with a broken wrist, but nothing major. After the plane crash the brave girl climbed out of the upside down, demolished plane and using a stick and a nearby fire that was created from the crash, made a torch and walked three quarters of a mile in the cold woods to a nearby house in only a t-shirt, shorts, and no shoes. Larry Wilkons then opened the door to the tired, cold little girl and called the police later being investigated about the plane crash. Her family (Parents, 9-year-old sister, and cousin) was found dead in the plane when they went to investigate but her brother Nicholas Brink is a technician in the Navy. Sailor was released from the hospital the next day and is now with a family member. The MTNS is removing the plane for further investigation on to how the engine might have caused the crash and the weather.

  11. "An Ohio Transgender teen's suicide, a mother's anguish"

Josh Alcorn (respectfully SHE will not be referred to as her desired name, Leelah Alcorn), a male to female transgender teen, committed suicide due to the emotional abuse occurring in her home from her religious parents and the fact she felt she would never be able to completely change to the person she was meant to be. Her mother vents about her death, but justifies her non-supportive behavior because of religious beliefs. She speaks of how she told Leelah she would always love her. The mother, Carla Alcorn, is now fearful of the hate being sent to her due to the misgendering and abuse she put on Leelah.

In my opinion, I am not going to sit here and say Carla didn't love Leelah, I'm sure she did, but it's sickening she would not accept her child for who she was. If you decide to bring a child in the world you should love said child unconditionally. You should be aware that the child may not grow up into the individual you may not approve of, but you should not outright disrespect them. Carla disrespected Leelah by referring to her as male. Not once did she say 'she' or 'her' in regards to Leelah. It was always 'he' or 'him' pronouns which is unacceptable, especially after she knew very well why the teen committed suicide. It's just disgusting. Not to mention, Leelah is to be buried in a suit which is disgusting. The least they could do is put her to rest peacefully in a way she would have wanted.

I hope Leelah rests in peace. Stay strong to all the transgender children, teens, adults, elderly. There are people who believe in you, don't give up. We will always support you even when the ones you thought loved you do not.

    1. I completely agree with what you're saying. Not to mention that Leelah's mother's excuse of it being "against her religion" is quite contradictory. Like most religions, Christianity is based off of loving others. She should've accepted her for who she was and loved her no matter what, as a human being and a daughter. "Love they neighbor as you love thyself."

    2. It is extremely sad that her parent’s disrespect drove her to committing suicide. I don’t understand how religious beliefs are more prioritized than a person’s happiness with who they are. Not being accepted by your parents can be harsh to take in and it’s hard to comprehend how her mom turned to abusing her child just because of gender. I find it hard to believe that even after her death, her mom still refused to respect her and buried her in a suit.

    3. I believe exactly what you are saying,i believe as well that religion shouldnt cloud your personal feelings with someone else whether you love them or not or if they had a feeling that made them uncomfortable in their own body.It is a sad time where parents refuse to accept their own child for what they want to do with themselves.

  12. On December 5th, Goza, who was paralyzed below the chest due to a drunk driver, was given another chance to move his legs. Researchers brought him to a University in Louisville. They put sensors on his legs and electrodes in his spine. The scientists sent electricity to the receptors in his spine. But, Goza still couldn’t move his leg or even a toe. The scientists made the voltage higher and Goza was able to move his toe. Then he was able to bend his knee and lift his leg off the table. Goza still can’t walk but he can control his bowels and bladder. I think it’s really cool that science is able to help a paralyzed person move their leg again. None of the people who have gone through this therapy are able to walk, but being able to move your leg when you were told you might never be able to do that again is pretty cool. Maybe in the future scientists will be able to get paralyzed people to walk again, if they were able to come this far.

It is unfortunate that this happened because of a drunk driver, but this research will help even more people in the future. 13. During this past week the famous and beloved sports reporter, Stuart Scott passed away of cancer. Scott grew up north carolina, and graduated from university of north Carolina (chapel hill) . He began his career with various local television stations before joining ESPN in 1993. Although there were already accomplished black sportscasters, his blending of hip-hop with sportscasting was unique for television. By 2008, he was a staple in ESPN's programming, and also began on abc as lead host for their coverage of the NBA.In 2007, Scott had an appendectomy and learned that his appendix was cancerous. After going into remission, he was again diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and 2013. Scott was honored at the espy award show in 2014 with the “jimmy v award show” for his fight against cancer, shortly before his death in 2015 at the age of 49. ESPN president said “Scott's flair and style, which he used to talk about the athletes he was covering, "changed everything." Fellow ESPN Anchor, stan verret , said he was a trailblazer: "not only because he was black – obviously black – but because of his style, his demeanor, his presentation. He did not shy away from the fact that he was a black man, and that allowed the rest of us who came along to just be ourselves." He became a role model for African-American sports journalists.

    1. Yea. Stuart Scott really was a great sports reporter and was an Idol for many African American sports journalists. He wasn’t even that old. His battle with cancer was long fought. He knew he was close to death, so he presented a speech when he got his award, shortly before he died, that was well organized and thought out. Your right! He had a great sports career, but it’s just sad that his life had to end so early. Many will miss his style and enthusiasm.

  14. A deadly attack in Paris went down on the famous magazine Charlie Hebdo. Gunmen targeted the French magazine that killed journalists and police in an attack launched at lunchtime on Wednesday. The magazine targets takedowns on politicians, public figures, and religious symbols of all faiths. Charlie Hebdo’s notorious cartoon was about Prophet Mohammed. This cartoon angered many Muslims and made it a target for various attacks. This isn’t the 1st time an action, like this one, has taken place toward Charlie Hebdo. In November of 2011, the office was burned down on the same day the notorious magazine was due to release an issue regarding an Islamic law. The cartoon was depicting a bearded and turbaned figure of Prophet Mohammed. The stereotypic cartoon was not taken to lightly by most Muslamic figures. Another event occurred on September of 2012. A cartoon was released depicting Mohammed naked, in a wheel chair being led around by an Orthodox Jewish man. France closed embassies and schools in approximately 20 countries temporarily for precautions against any actions that might be taken place out of anger. This magazine is a very harsh one and although it is a big seller in France, it may need to be shut down for a bit of time.

Charlie Hebod has repeatedly toyed with the Islamic faith and has even gone to the extremes of mocking the religion with phrases such as: " Mahomet. Une étoile est neé and Johnny tweete son retour. Ah que c’est pas facile de tweeter dans le noir." This religious prejudice should not be popularized or receive praise.

  15. South Korean to drop Sony film in North by balloon

    - South Koreans are trying to illegally smuggle the banished movie called “The Interview”, into North Korea. The reason the movie is banned in North Korea is because it is a comedy, made by the United States, which tells a story of how a TV host and producer assassinate the dictator Kim Jun Un. Throughout the movie, there were multiple things that would be called offensive to the North Koreans and especially Kim Jun Un for example, in the movie; “Kim Jun Un” says that he is very lonely when in real life he has a wife and a daughter yet in the movie he is with other women. But in the movie, it showed how Kim Jun Un isn’t a god to the North Korean peasants but just another human being. When the South Koreans tried to fly 100,000 movies and USBs over to North Korea, North Korean soldiers began to shoot at the balloons that tried to cross the border, which caused South Koreans to fire back. If the movies and the USB drives make it to the people of North Korea, it could bring down the dictatorship of Kim Jun Un. They also tried to smuggle the items to China through broadcasting radio transmissions to reach those who own illegal short wave radios. I believe it would be a great idea to show the people of North Korea that Kim Jun Un isn’t better than everyone else or is a “God” but only became ruler because he was in the family, he didn’t do anything great.

    1. By Kim Jun Un trying to shut down a movie that they have no right doing and only can by threatening shows that the leader of North Korea is obsessed with controlling things and being in control. If a leader of an entire country is upset with a few things said by Seth Rogen in a comedy movie he does not have the courage or mentality to be a leader.

    2. I think the people of North Korea need to see how bad they have it and how horrible their leader is and if they could get this movie to the people it might start opening their eyes to reality.

    4. This movie is hilarious, I have only seen parts of it but it's pretty funny. But I hope that this movie makes these people realize about how bad North Korea is to their people. I hope that Kim Jun Un sees this movie and it might change his opinion on how bad he is treating his people. Then he might realize that he isn't that important and then the people can take charge of this situation.

      Delete
    5. In my opinion North Korea should take the movie "The Interview" as an eye opener and from an outside perspective they could see how horrible their leader is and the mistakes their leader is making for the country. They should have never banished the movie or made it illegal to watch. They just need to sit down relax and find the humor in it and not take everything so offensive to their country.

ESPN: Big Unit, Biggio, Pedro, and Smoltz to Hall

Randy Jonson, Pedro Martinez, and John Smoltz were all terrific pitchers at the highest level of the sport, and they did it during the “Steroid Era”. The steroid era was especially difficult for pitchers because hitters had so much more pop of the bat, so some pitchers gave in and took the drugs and were successful like Roger Clemens, but the pitchers who didn’t and were still at the top of the game belong in the Hall Of Fame. This includes ¾ of the HOF draft class of 2015 with, Johnson, Martinez, and Smoltz, but a Houston Astros second baseman with a milestone of 3,000 career hits came up 2 votes short last year but was avenged by being put in the HOF this year. The three pitchers elected this year were all first year ballot choices, which is a very difficult thing to do with the rule of each voter only allowed to pick 10 players, which is a very questioned rule. Craig Biggio was heart broken last year by the voting that this year when he received the call he asked, “ Is this a prank phone call?” as he was crying.

  17. Rare Middle East snow kills five, but silences Syrian guns

Snow fell in the Middle East recently causing the death of 3 people in Lebanon and 2 in Aleppo. The government has concluded this event as catastrophic due to lack of tents built for the snow in refugee camps. The better outcome of this event is that it mostly silenced the guns in Syria and grounded government war planes because of bad visibility. My thoughts on this event is a double sided feeling due to the deaths. The deaths were not at all a good outcome to this weather as there should have been resources prepared in the worst outcome for such causes. But the better outcome of this even is that gunfire and plane attacks were stopped and i believe thats probably one of the few incredibly crucial benefits due to the fact that this has been going on for quite some time and the pause in events was extremely needed. I believe that Syria should use this pause of fire as a space of thought and should figure out a plan to cease fire and find a solution that benefits both parties. This snow should basically be used to benefit in terms of war but also make sure more deaths do not ensue as the fighting needs to have a resolution soon enough.

  18. The police organized an enormous manhunt across the Paris region on Wednesday for three suspects they said were involved in a brazen and methodical midday slaughter at a satirical newspaper that had lampooned Islam. The terrorist attack by masked gunmen on the newspaper, Charlie Hebdo, left 12 people dead — including the top editor, prominent cartoonists and police officers — and was among the deadliest in postwar France. The killers escaped, traumatizing the city and sending shock waves through Europe and beyond. Officials and witnesses said at least two gunmen had carried out the attack with assault weapons and military-style precision. President François Hollande of France called it a display of extraordinary “barbarism” that was “without a doubt” an act of terrorism. He declared Thursday a national day of mourning. An amateur video of the assailants’ subsequent gunfight with the police showed the men shouting: “We have avenged the Prophet Muhammad. We have killed Charlie Hebdo!” The video, the source of which could not be verified, also showed the gunmen killing a police officer as he lay wounded on a nearby street.

This girl, which her name wasn't shown, shot her brother and killed him. Somehow they captured the 11 year old little sister too because the article said that the 11 year old was a part of the killing. I don't understand how a situation could get bad enough to end up killing someone in your family. I hope that people learn from this and they starting treating each other better then before. The children's parents, Keith Kornegay, 37, and Misty Kornegay, 33 had been away since Sunday, authorities said. They were arrested on Tuesday, charged with child neglect causing great bodily harm and are accused of failing to properly supervise their children. This girl had been building up all of this anger over the past years from how her brother tortured her. She finally had the gut to tell the police about what happened. I feel very bad for this girl because she is going to live the rest of her life with the fact that she killed her brother which will completely ruin her mental toughness.

"New York City Police Department and other law enforcement personnel responded to a threat from ISIS after someone re-released a September 2014 message that tells followers to "rise up and kill intelligence officers, police officers, soldiers, and civilians."" Isis has planned attacks on the United States, Canada, Australia, and France, due to the lack of knowledge of Isis. Isis had recently attacked France causing the nation's eyes to open and take charge against Isis. Isis has sent out audio recordings to people telling them what will happen to their country and giving no reason to how they will do it or when. Isis is an awful group of terrorists, attacking countries for no reason and the two that attacked France were young men who are just leading out to the leader of Isis. Also, what’s the purpose in hacking a twitter account for CENTCOM, in the twitter posts, they posted a picture, showing webcam images in a few military bases, since ISIS showed CENTCOM they have hacked into computer bases, then CENTCOM can have people run anti-virus software on the computers in every military base, purging ISIS out of our computers. CENTCOM claims they have solved the problem before any important files or plans for the military were leaked, but contact information for government officials and unimportant military files were posted also. Luckily ISIS just hacked a Twitter account and not an important agency like the NSA, or the DOD.

  22. Punk band find $250,000 stolen painting in New Orleans

Members of punk band Stereo Fire Empire have found and returned a $250,000 painting hours after it was stolen from a New Orleans gallery. The artist and creator of the stolen painting entitled Wendy and Me, George Rodrigue, died in 2013. His fame quickly increased following his death. His paintings usually depict a blue doge, which is based on a Cajun legend called loup-garou. Wendy and Me was stolen in broad daylight from New Orleans’ George Rodrigue Studios at 3:00 p.m. on January 6th. After performing a show at the House of Blues, bassist, Elliot Newkirk, discovered the painting standing up against a wall. After remembering that they had seen the missing painting on Facebook nearly 5 minutes before the discovery, they were quite surprised and handed it over to the police. The band described it as a “Scooby-Doo adventure” and did not ask for a reward. “We joked that we’re going to write a song about it, so we’ll see what happens,” said Newkirk. As a lover of the arts, I am glad to see that people had the decency to hand over the painting instead of taking and possibly selling it.

Recently on January 9th, there was an accident in Georgia involving my friend's cousin. His name was Christopher Abernathy. On that night he was helping his stepfather change a flat tire on Interstate 95 when all of a sudden a tractor trailer came out of his lane and hit Chris. Chris was off the side holding a flashlight with his two little brothers in the car. Soon after he was hit, they airlifted him to a nearby children's hospital where on saturday, they decided to take him off of life support. They said he had no brain activity, but have decided to donate his organs. The identity of the truck driver wasn't shown and no charges have been pressed. The case against the third grade teacher was dropped after the victim's family told police the girl was too traumatized to testify at the trial, So they dropped the case immediatly.
A teacher traumitized this little girl and probably for the rest of that poor child life and there is nothing she can be able to do now about it. This man can now live a good life and get off the hook that easily. Which is not right at all. 28. On January 9th, a crash involving forty-seven Buddy Taylor Middle School students and the driver of the school bus collided with a Mazda Sedan carrying a young woman. This is a tragedy that was actually not caused by either of the drivers! Behind the Mazda Sedan, was a man in a Mitsubishi, who was most likely in a rush, or unaware of the bus turning east on Whiteview Pkwy, so he drove into the Sedan and rear-ended her into the school bus attempting to make a turn. This caused a rather large accident, which resulted in a separate bus to take every child to Florida Hospital Flagler, and 25 of these students had a minor injury needed to be treated. The bus driver was injured as well. However, the woman in the Mazda was taken to the hospital by Flagler County’s EMS.
Personally, I sincerely hope that everything is taken care of by the doctors and nurses at the hospital. This is nothing short of a miracle, though as an entire bus hit this Sedan, I feel that driving needs to be taken more seriously than it is. Also, I have been taught that when driving, always assume that other drivers are dangerously driving, and know that the possibility that anyone could ram your car is higher than you would expect. As most of us are driving, or learning to drive, I feel this news applies to us. Please practice safe driving, because everytime you turn that key you are responsible for every passenger in your car, do not take reckless driving lightly. Prepare yourself adequately before you start driving, by adjusting mirrors and sending that “ttyl” text. Please, please, please be careful, because that Sedan could’ve been any of us.

It's unfortunate for the woman and the kids on the bus that couldn't do anything to prevent the incident, but life does unfortunately include accidents. Many times they are caused by reckless and careless drivers, most like in this situation.

  30. Homeless man fatally shot in Albuquerque - http://www.cnn.com/2015/01/12/us/albuquerque-police-murder-charges/index.html

In Albuquerque, New Mexico, mentally ill homeless man James Boyd was shot and killed with excessive force by the police department. The justification for Boyd’s death was due to illegal camping in hills of the city and two small camping knives he carried. The cops had spent hours negotiating with Boyd trying to convince him to leave, and once he finally complies, a flash grenade was thrown; the homeless man turns his back around and police open fire. Though this isn’t the end of the incident, as police continue to fire bean pellets at him and send an attack dog on his leg, Boyd gasps and wheezes for breath, helpless to the attacks. He is then handcuffed and sent to the hospital only to die the next morning. This isn’t the first time an attack like this has happened in Albuquerque either, records show that police has shot at least 26 civilians since 2010, and a dozen of them have ended fatally. 27 year-old schizophrenic Christopher Torrez was shot by police in his pajamas in his own back yard. Officers jumped his fence to serve a warrant on him, claimed he was armed, and then shot him in the back. What was he armed with? A broom. His parents, who were there at the incident, said that Torrez laid down the broomstick and put his hands up, yet the officers still shot him. While his parents did sue the department for a $6 million civil judgment, the two cops had paid leave and returned to the force with no consequences. None of the dozens officers involved in the incident with Boyd had gone through any repercussions or punishments, until over a year later, this past Monday when officer Keith Sandy and Dominique Perez were charged with first-degree murder. The FBI has now been involved in investigating the crime and a federal takeover may occur in Albuquerque.

While this is yet just ANOTHER article on police brutality, I felt it to be a important to discuss this article after I read it. This is not any way related to race, and just the fact police still abuse their powers and forget their job is to protect and serve the people. If you watch the video, you can see the outrageous actions of the officers, playing with an innocent man’s life. Even after hours of negotiation they readily fired at Boyd and acted like he was an actual threat. The issue of illegal over night camping and a homeless man with two small knives called for a police force of over a dozen to take care of the situation. Over a dozen armed officers for one almost harmless homeless man, just let that sink in. I am mortified that the cops in control of the situation could get away with those actions for so long, and disgusted that the not a single cop in Albuquerque has been charged or fired due to any of the 26 attacks and 12 murders they’ve committed within the past 4 years of the innocent civilians such as Torrez. This actual relates back to my current event in November, when mental illness patient Kaldrick Donald was murdered by police in his own bathroom in front of his mother. There was no reason for these violent actions to be taken upon these mentally ill men, or anyone in general who is not a threat. No, I’m not saying all cops are violent murderers; there are plenty good cops in America. But the fact many get away with cold murder and can still freely walk the streets with their weapons (and get paid leave and keep their jobs) just because they carry a badge should frighten anyone.

Rimer ditched the cruiser just a few minutes after stealing it and hitched a ride in a different vehicle for another 10 miles before police apprehended her in Aliquippa. Upon search, officers found hypodermic needles on Rimer. Rimer now claims to have no recollection of stealing or driving the police cruiser. This is the third theft of a police cruiser in the state in the last week.

    1. I feel that there's an issue with the police force then, this is the third incident, that is just unacceptable. The same time then there's something going on with the community and their judgment on the police.

  33. Msn: The fearless life of Stuart Scott

Staurt Scott was an idol in all eyes of every sports fan around the United States. He brought a type of swagger to reporting that nobody has done before. He was unique in his own way and the people who watched him were in love at first sight. Staurt Scott was a fearless man. He didn’t care what other people thought about him or said about him. He didn’t play it safe when it came to reporting and he went after everything with zest. In the hearts of every sports fan Stuart Scott will be remembered and admired. What was unique about him was that, he made a decision in his life to live it the way he wanted to, even being diagnosed with cancer. There is a statement that said he didn’t even want to know what type of cancer he had or what stage it was in. He didn’t want to give in. He knew deep down that he had limited time left to live. He left us with catchy phrases like “Boo Ya!” or the term used to describe a home run on sports center. He will forever be remembered by us, R.I.P Stuart Scott.

SpaceX confirms $1 billion funding round with Google

Google and Fidelity are investing in a $1 billion collectively in SpaceX, a space transportation company. They both own just under 10 percent of $10 billion dollar company. Info points in the direction that they hope to use the funding to increase internet availability by sending it to areas where it is unavailable via satellite. Elon Musk, the owner of SpaceX, says sending the signal over satellite would be faster than cables and would bring faster speeds. He also confidently states that it should be in effect no less than five years from now. I admire Musk's determination to help the world thrive and be a better place, from creating his own line of electric cars to his space program, he is a true entrepreneur and an inspiration to the younger generation.

  35. There has been a report, and it has been proven that 11 of the 12 footballs use by the New England Patriots in the AFC chance into game were 2 PSI lower than regulation. 11 of 12 is a big margin, this was obviously a deliberate act by someone on that patriots staff. The underinflated balls were discovered at halftime and were fixed. The change in the balls PSI is apparently linked with the ability for the QB to be able to squeeze the football, but… Statistics from the game show that Tom Brady did significantly better in the second half then in the first half. So, with that the one main question is why? There dominating defeat that they gave the colt was not due to this cheating act, so what was the reason for it. People are more worried about the tainted name of Brady and there head coach and less on the actual act.

  36. Liberia: Only 5 people being treated for Ebola in country
    4
MONROVIA, Liberia – Liberia said Monday that there are currently only five confirmed cases of Ebola in the entire country -- a dramatic turnaround in the West African nation where the virus has taken its deadliest toll.
At the height of the outbreak in August and September, Liberia was recording more than 300 new cases of the virus every week. To date 3,636 Liberians have died of Ebola, according to the World Health Organization.
But the outbreak has begun to wane. Now there are now just five people in the country being treated for Ebola. This is a great turn around for Liberia, they really deserve it. They have gone to through so much with this virus for it to be settling and only have 5 people left with it, I hope they get it down to 0. Hopefully this means a new, healthier chapter for African nations. And they don’t have a terrible outbreak like this again.

  37. NBC NEWS- Ebola Doctor Speaks Out for the 1st Time Since Leaving the Hospital

Dr. Craig Spencer who was diagnosed with Ebola in October was free of the virus in late November. He was the first person diagnosed in New York City. After he was virus free he told WNYC that he plans on returning to West Africa, where he treated Ebola patients. While he had the virus he was in the Bellevue Hospital Center he exercised to keep his muscles from deteriorating and had the nurses make homemade food that he sometimes ate. While in isolation he kept up his body as much as possible and that could be one of the reasons he survived the deadly virus known as Ebola. The Ebola epidemic originated from West Africa and has killed thousands of people, but not many have been treated in the United States. Although Dr. Craig Spencer survived the epidemic he knows his life will never go back to the way it was before. He will continue trying to find a cure to the virus and go back and help many in West Africa that have it.

  38. Obama opens door to 'limited' ground combat operations against ISIS

President Obama on Wednesday opened the door to "limited" ground combat operations against the Islamic State, as he asked Congress to formally authorize military force against the terrorist network. The president, in a proposed resolution and a letter to Congress, underscored the "grave threat" posed by ISIS."If left unchecked, ISIL will pose a threat beyond the Middle East, including to the United States homeland," Obama said. The proposal includes limitations that would bar "enduring offensive ground combat operations" and let the authorization lapse after three years. The letter from Obama says the authorization would not allow "long-term, large-scale ground combat operations like those" conducted in Iraq and Afghanistan. But the request includes no restrictions on where U.S. forces could pursue the threat. And while the current military campaign centers on coalition airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, the proposal clearly allows U.S. ground troops to engage in limited circumstances. Obama argues the congressional authorizations President George W. Bush used to justify military action after 9/11 are sufficient for him to deploy more than 2,700 U.S. troops to train and assist Iraqi security forces and conduct ongoing airstrikes against targets in Iraq and Syria. Critics have said Obama is overstepping outdated authorities to target the new threat from militants imposing a violent form of Shariah law in pursuit of the establishment of an Islamic state.

  39. Vet posts pic of cat shot with arrow, triggers social media firestorm

Dr. Kristen Lindsey llegedly shot an arrow into the back of an orange tabby's head and posted a proud photo this week on Facebook of herself smiling, as she dangled its limp body by the arrow's shaft. Alongside, Lindsey added a comment, CNN affiliate KBTX reported. "My first bow kill, lol. The only good feral tomcat is one with an arrow through it's head! Vet of the year award ... Gladly accepted." An animal rescuer said that Lindsey's prey was probably not a feral cat but the pet of an elderly couple, who called him "Tiger" who had gone missing on Wednesday, the same day that Lindsey posted the photo of the slain cat. CNN has not been able to confirm the claim. After her name was duct taped over on the sign of the front of the clinic, Lindsey was fired and publicly distanced from her actions. Stated by Dr. Bruce Buenger, "Our goal now is to go on and try to fix our black eye and hope that people are reasonable and understand that those actions don't anyway portray what we're for here at Washington Animal Clinic. We put our heart and soul into this place." Yes, Lindsey should be punished for her actions and deeds, playing into animal cruelty, but the clinic shouldn't be labeled as such because of the ignorance and stupidity of one employee."Animal cruelty must be taken seriously, and the guilty parties should be punished to the fullest extent of the law," said cat advocacy activist Becky Robinson. Her organization, Alley Cat Allies, is offering a $7,500 reward for evidence leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who shot the cat.
