My blog post this week is inspired partly by Hank Green’s new VlogBrother’s video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mK4kBNdOAoc), and partly by watching, admittedly, too many Greens’ brothers inspired videos on YouTube.
ReplyDeleteCrashCourse: Insert Topic Here is turning three years old this month. This is astonishing to me, since I remember when Crash Course was a brand new idea in the minds of John and Hank. I remember eagerly anticipating the first episodes, and I was never disappointed. Three years later and I’m not disappointed, either—especially with the addition of several new topics such as economics, astronomy, government, and physiology.
John and Hank have (definitely not singlehandedly) changed the face of education. It’s becoming more and more mainstream for students (and teachers alike) to be able to access educational materials at their leisure—at home, at work, at school, on the toilet, etc. This is how learning and schooling will look in the future. I honestly believe that “traditional” schooling and this compartmentalized educational system that we are currently a part of is on its last leg; it won’t last too much longer. And I, for one, am kind of happy to see it go.
There is a societal perception that the teacher should be the lone expert in the room; the disseminator of information; the proprietor of knowledge. This is perpetuated by scores of years of tradition—that is how education worked in the past. And, in the past it worked well. But times have changed; the days of broadcast media are dwindling, and the “one-size-fits-all” mentality of education isn’t really accepted anymore (especially in the field of education—in society, the idea is catching on, but it’s still definitely murky).
YouTube channels such as Crash Course and Khan Academy are allowing this change to happen on a massive scale. These channels have, literally, tens of millions of views and viewers, and there are communities built upon these types of channels. And, the best part is, these channels are operated by people who love learning, and education, and teaching, and who are invested in allowing students (not just 5-18 year olds, but anyone) to learn whenever, wherever, and at the pace they learn. Education is becoming increasingly individualized.
Which makes my job interesting. Teachers today have a radically different job then they have ever had in the history of teaching. We’re being asked to teach in two different systems—on the one hand we’re bound by the traditional method (I know that the standards are moving away from the traditional style, but c’mon, you still move from class to class by a bell, you learn compartmentalized subjects, you take standardized tests, etc.), and on the other hand, we’re all studying new, student-driven methods of instruction that utilize the same concepts that John, Hank, and Sal Khan have popularized on a massive scale.
I do feel bad for students today—they are victims of the multiple personalities of schooling. Hopefully, this issue resolves itself sooner rather than later, but if you’re reading this and you’re currently in my class, don’t count on it happening in your schooling lifetime. That being said, it’s super important to never stop learning, and honestly, I think that all of you are learners, but that school isn’t necessarily doing much for your style of learning. That’s not an excuse, though—in this new era of learning, teaching, and schooling, you, the student, are counted on to have as much self-advocacy as possible. The teacher is an expert, but not the expert. Heck, all of you are experts at something. Talk to your peers, ask questions, dig deeper, and learn socially. Remember, the beauty of education and being a human is becoming less stupid together.
I agree. In school staff try and make us students do multiple things. By either giving us an overwhelming amount of homework or learning multiple things in one day. One thing that teachers do today that is on the positive side is that they make learning fun in some way. They include 90 percent of the students in the classroom and they use visual representations that make the topic they're talking about 10x more interesting. I like the old education system better because everything was physically. Like all tests were taken on paper with pencil. Versus most texts taken online and essay's will be written online as well. Although personally i have used Khan Academy to help me with some math tests and it has helped so I do approve of the website and it's ability to help a person succeed.
DeleteI never actually used Khan Academy or Crash Course, but I could tell you that tens of millions of views is a huge number. If they are getting that many, then they have to be doing something right. Students can probably relate to that way of learning so much more compared to the way some teachers teach in our school today. Straight out of a textbook learning is the worst in my opinion. Some students probably like it, but most students would rather get taught by visual representation and "hand's on learning".
DeleteMy current event this week is on the outrageous weather we have been having. Some say that this weather is winter like, but i think that it is just great. In Palm Coast, Florida, we are having our low temperatures in the 30's, but in the north, they already have snow. Some of the low temperatures are in the teens.
DeleteOn November seventeenth, the temperature in Tennessee is 11 degrees, this is crazy last year the average temperature for them at this time of year is usually around 90 degrees, but now it is a whole lot colder than before. What does this mean for our winter? This winter, the weather is predicted to be very, very cold. So what does that mean for Florida? Florida is having an abnormal cold snap too, on the day after Halloween, the first cold snap came and it was very windy and did not get hot at all.
This is going to be a very cold winter, at least that’s what CNN said, but I believe that they are right, so to all of you people out there who love the cold, looks like it is time to grab them jackets and head out into the snow because there will be a lot of it.
With education changing each year, teachers have to keep teaching different material in different ways. This is confusing for teachers AND students. But with Hank and John, they have a specific and stylized method of teaching that is quick and straight to the point. Using these videos as an education method makes the student more responsible for understanding the content themselves. What is great about having these videos to base your information off of though is more convenient, because you can watch and rewatch a video, and you cannot rewatch a lesson in class. Also if you don't understand one video, you can watch a different video to understand the lesson plan better.
DeleteI personally have used Crash Course for help in Chemistry and in World History and I think that John and Hank Green do a very good job in making the information easy to understand.
DeleteLaundry detergent pods are 'real risk' to children// CNN
ReplyDelete"Last year a Florida mother of a 7-month-old came back to her room to find that her baby had accidentally eaten one of those bright colored laundry detergent pods." Laundry detergent is a very poisonous liquid that not many people know about. CNN asked many kids if they knew how harmful laundry detergent was and they did not even know it was dangerous. Having kids near these chemicals and not giving them the warnings of the product is one of the main reasons children die from this. "n the period of about a year, 17,230 children under the age of 6 have been accidentally poisoned by the packets, according to a new study in the journal Pediatrics." The main problem is young children getting to these packets because they have gotten out of their parents watch and I feel like this is more of an irresponsible situation but, we can also solve this by changing the detergent ingredients. By having factors of testing in the detergent, producers can find a way to make detergent a non-poisonous chemical. I do feel bad for these children getting a hold of these products that have a big impact on their health and I feel like they should try changing the detergents to make them not child friendly, but not deadly.
I think that the parent should have kept supplies that they know would be toxic to children in high places that are non reachable unless reached by a teenager or adult. I do agree though they should start making detergents out of more organic things and not so much chemicals. This is because children could get into it and some even die because their bodies can't handle the amount of chemicals in the substance, or because it's all around better if you put more organic things to create detergents. This would also mean that the environment would be more healthier and more spacious as it is now. I think the companies that make the detergents and such need to reevaluate and think of all the other products they can use to make it. Ones that are more efficient and healthier to the environment and people as well.
DeleteI believe, in the first place, that harmful products like laundry detergent shouldn’t even be near a child. They should be somewhere they could never even reach it. There are, though, most of the time warnings on poisonous ingredients like laundry detergent saying “not to swallow” or “dangerous to your health”. But is a baby really going to be able to know that that substance isn’t edible? We should either teach them not to consume or be near certain things or just simply keep them away from children. Parents should also keep a close eye on their child at all times; the parent shouldn’t of left the baby alone for the time he/she consumed the laundry detergent. Also, I don’t understand how you could make laundry detergent more organic and “non- poisonous”. If you have a child and you want to be extra careful, the parents should buy non-toxic laundry detergent or home make it. I think the simplest method for this situation, though, is to just get these harmful products away from small children.
DeleteI disagree. I think we should teach children the dangers that are held within the household. We also can't believe that a small child is responsible enough to avoid chemicals. There's a reason why certain cabinets are so high, or why there are child locks to put on door knobs and sink cabinets. Yes, the child doesn't know. Yes, it's not their fault. But changing the ingredients isn't the easiest thing to do. It's like Original Coca-Cola and Coke Zero. It's similar, but not the same. People are going to complain about laundry detergent causing different allergic reactions, or smelling weird. Frankly, I would admittedly be a part of that population. The only ingredients needed to be changed here are the ingredients of proper parenting, and responsibilities as an adult.
DeleteI think this could be solved by just putting the laundry detergent in a place that's more difficult to get to. But, if it is possible to make the detergent more child friendly while also effective then that should be done. Another way to solve this problem is to just watch your kids more, especially a 7 month old.
DeleteI have a three year old toddler in my household (my sister) and we have taught her to not go under the sink which is where we put all the dangerous stuff. However, for younger children who are no able to understand this, the parents should take responsibility and make the cabinets harder to open or put the chemicals on a high shelf. Also, they must be aware of where their child is at at all times to assure they are not getting into anything they shouldn't be.
DeleteI feel that children should be taught that there are dangerous toxins in the house. However, the parent or guardian should be proactive and guardian by placing harmful toxins in a cabinet or some place that a child cannot reach. My nephew, who is three years old was taught to not mess with things that are not his. He was also taught that things under the sink were dangerous and to not mess with them.
DeleteI do feel bad for the children but I don't think the detergent companies should have to change their ingredients due to the parents' careless actions. It's obvious children under the age of 6 will put small things in their mouthes. Parents should've seen the situatuation and kept those harmful packets away from their children especially if they're unsupervised.
DeleteI agree that the parents should keep their "chemicals" out of reach of children, but i don't think that the companies should have to change the ingredients. If the companies have to change their ingredients then your cloths could be affected by the new chemicals. The way this could be solved would be to just put the detergent in a place where only people old enough to know that you shouldn't eat it can reach, or hide the detergent but that just sounds silly.
DeleteI agree with Jason because while these pods are dangerous are they not also helpful? If the companies did discontinue there products or change them the value of the pods might decrease. But most importantly I believe the parents need to hide the pods from their kids. Anything that says harmful if swallowed should be hidden from kids' sight.
DeleteI also agree with Jason and Tina, the chemicals should be kept out of reach of children. Children are known to put everything in their mouths, but that doesn't mean that the companies should change the way they make their products. Anything that can harm the human body should stay hidden from young children.
DeleteI agree with the thought of “changing it to make it non poisonous.” We can change the chemicals but we cant change kids from eating it on accident. The body count is to high, 17,230 is way to many kids getting sick and passing away over trying it. We should educate them into knowing that it isn’t safe to consume stuff like that but then again they’re young children so they really wouldn’t understand the harmfulness of it.
DeleteThe fact that the laundry detergent was even in reach of that baby is irresponsible. How would a baby get a packet of detergent if it wasn't near the floor if they were walking around the house? With such a poisonous chemical in the reach of children, this parent really needs to revaluate their organization. Babies are so much smaller than full grown adults, the poison would be so much more deadly. You can teach the children to not touch these dangerous objects, but depending on age or if they are actually going to listen or not, you can't always rely on a child to do exactly what you ask all the time. This parent either needs to reorganize, teach their kids, or just be more careful in general.
DeleteI believe that the ingredients in laundry detergent need to be changed because even if the parent I was their child there is always a chance that they could get a hold of it especially with younger children. I also believe that the parent needs to keep the chemicals away from the child so it limits the odds of them getting a hold of laundry detergent. While I know that they cant eliminate the use f chemicals in laundry detergent they can make it less of a poison.
DeleteI think that it's the parents responsibility to make sure that their child doesn't get ahold of anything that could harm them. It could be as simple as storing it in a high place where the child can't get to it.
DeleteEarly Monday evening a family was visiting Bodega Head in Bodega Bay. The family including the 4 year old boy that the tragic accident happened to were taking a hike on the beautiful cliffs of California. The boy and his mother went on a trail and thats when the 4 year old fell 238 feet to the beach below. Bodega Bay Fire Protection found him laying conscious and crying. They later took the boy to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. the only issue while transferring the boy there was that they were going to airlift him to decrease the amount of time it took to get there, but weather conditions were to risky and they took him by ambulance which increased the time by 30 minutes. Days later the little boy is still in "serious" conditions and is only asking to be visited by family and close family friends. I just don't how if you're walking with your child and the child and you don't fall from the cliff, or why you let your child out of your sight that led to the traumatic accident. police and detectives are looking for into the case for further details.
ReplyDeleteI cannot even imagine how agonizing it would be to be that mother watching her child fall 238 feet down a cliff. This incident also has to be extremely traumatizing for the child, too. Also, it is a little strange that the mother wouldn’t pay close enough attention on her son, seeing that they were on a 238-foot cliff. While I researched this further, I found that it is extremely rare or if at all possible for a person to survive that kind of a fall. The fall was equal to a 23- story building! He was then rushed to the nearest trauma center with major injuries. It is a miracle he survived at all; I can’t even believe it.
DeleteThis is so sad. I cannot believe that this happened. I believe that the mother should have been a little more careful. You really need to beware that you are on cliff with your four year old son. I feel really bad for the family and I hope that he gets better. this goes to show that we really need to be careful.
DeleteIf detectives don't know the case, then don't assume that the child fell because the parent was being irresponsible. What if the child slipped, or they were taking a picture. I would assume, through the article saying the weather conditions were bad, that they were hiking, the weather got rough & the child probably lost balance or slipped. The situation is left as a mystery, we shouldn't assume it's always the parent's fault, especially if the kid got out of control and wasn't listening to the parent. It could've been the kid's fault, or a complete accident.
DeleteHe survived a 238 foot fall? How? I hope he's alright and he gets better soon. This must be very hard on the family and really painful for the boy. I also don't understand how this happened. If a four year boy is around a cliff the thing that would make the most sense to do is to pay a little more attention to him. They're just lucky he survived because it's really unlikely for someone to even survive that fall.
DeleteAs Michael said, it is unclear whether or not the child simply slipped or was out of the parent's sight. It is wrong to assume that the parent was being irresponsible and it is totally plausible the child may have slipped and fell. This is nothing new. Yes, while tragic, the parents should be blamed solely for this. Do you know the conditions of the soil? No? Or if it had rained recently? How about how close they were to the edge? I assume no. While the parents should have probably had one of those leash backpacks to assure they wouldn't slip or they could have waited till the child was older, but accidents happen. I hope he gets better soon.

DeleteAlthough i believe the parents did care for the boy, I agree with your statement of how they should've kept the boy in sight and out of such danger. The boy shouldn't have been near the cliff, and if he was the parents should have been with him to keep him from falling. However, there is a slight possibility that the parents didn't care much for the child, how do you let him fall of a cliff?
DeleteA 4 year old child has no business being 238 feet above the ground, never mind being near an edge that could of led to his death. If you are a parent you have many jobs including raising them right but at the base of being a parent your job is to keep them alive until they're 18. Im sure the boy was being curious and wanted to see how high he was and what the work looked like but I'm sure he regreets it and it horrible what happened.
DeleteIf I was the parent of this kid, I would feel like I did a bad job in knowing weather something was right or wrong for my child, but this was defiantly a wrong. I can't believe that the kid lived after a 238 foot fall, but I'm very glad he did. I hope that everything goes well for this kid and hope that he is not paralyzed.
DeleteI feel like that is a terrible tragedy that could have been prevented in a very easy manor. Many precautions could have been put forth to prevent the 4 year old boy from falling off the cliff to the beach 238 feet below. They make harnesses that go onto the mothers back so that the child can be right with her. The baby’s safety should have been the first thing on the mothers mind. I am however, very glad the baby is still alive and I hope he makes a quick recover
DeleteThis was a horrible mistake which could have easily been prevented if the mother took more care in watching her baby. I don't believe she just neglected her child. The baby had no reason being up that high anyways and was so lucky to survive, it was a great thing he did!
DeleteThis is an horrible incident that I would never wish on any one. That child could have died, but the angels were watching him that day. The parents are very lucky, but should be more careful while they are with their child.
DeleteThis is a tragic accident but how could a little boy fall that far if he's with an adult? This just makes me suspicious but also how could he fall that far and live? I hope the boy lives.
DeleteIt’s a sad topic to think about when it comes to children dying, and we all hope he gets better but it is at fault of the parent for not paying close attention to her young child. He must have been curious and looked over the edge or slipped, maybe even tried to explore on his own and fell. Still the mother should have not let him scurry away from her. Still very sad to see such a young child hurt.
DeleteI think its pretty amazing how a 4 year old human survived a 238 feet fall from the top of a cliff. Its even more insane that he was conscious when she found him. I think the mother she take better care of her child after this incident and watch over him more protectively. I hope the child gets better and recovers from all of his injuries and that the mom does a better parenting job when hiking in the mountains.
DeleteIt is crazy that the mother would bring her 4 year old up to such a high location, 238 feet. She should have taken better care of her child and kept an eye on him the whole time they were up there. He was probably curious and went to the edge and without and parental vision telling him to “stop and get away from the edge” and he but luckily was okay!
DeleteWow! That's a crazy story. I agree with Ashley. I personally feel that the mother should have been holding the 4 year old's hand. This accident could have been prevented.
DeleteMy question for this is why would they let a 4 year old boy go hiking without someone being there carefully helping him across the gravel preventing him falling 238 feet. Waiting fot transportation is ridiculous too because around hiking areas there are probably more people to get injured and hurt than living somewhere 30 min away. I agree with your statement on how its ridiculoud that the adults let the child out of their sight. Also, i would suggest that the people in the area around the hiking trail to put up signs and make sure children from the age of 10 and under have the proper equiptment in case this situation were to happen again that the child to be clipped to the adult so the child wouldn't fall off if this were to happen again.

ReplyDeleteA teacher in Texas has been suspended without pay after accusations that she sent a multiple racist tweets about the incidents in Ferguson, Missouri. A representative for the Duncanville Independent School District said this at a press conference. The name of this high school English teacher at Duncanville High School is Vinita Hegwood. She allegedly sent the tweets from her personal Twitter account on Friday. One of the tweets were "Who the (*) made you dumb (*) crackers think I give a squat (*) about your opinions. #Ferguson Kill yourselves." Later on that Friday evening another tweet appeared, saying, "You exhibit nigga behavior, I'm a call you a nigga. You acting crackerish, I'm a call you a cracker." Not to point out that Vinita Hegwood is an African-American. The Twitter account from which she made the tweets has since been taken down. Vinita Hegwood did not respond to CNN's calls and emails seeking comment. Many stated that district employees do have the right to free speech, but Vinita Hegwood's comments were so egregious, the school was left with "no other option."
ReplyDeleteForget suspension, why is this teacher not fired? It's just plain wrong that a teacher is acting like that, let alone tweeting about school. That is a form of bullying and that is unacceptable from a teacher. Teachers need to be more closely monitored and shouldn't get away with this kind of stuff.
DeleteThe teacher should be fired. Yes people have a freedom of speech but her statement on social media about her racistism should not be permitted at all. That teacher now showed favoritism towards white children instead of african american children and as a teacher that is not acceptable at all. To put out how you feel is something a teacher should keep to themselves and not share where other students or facualty members of the school can see.
DeleteCNN- American released from North Korea
ReplyDeleteThis article on CNN, posted October 21, 2014, is about how a man named Jeffrey Fowle was arrested in North Korea and recently released. Fowle was arrested in North Korea in May for leaving a bible in his hotel room. He was jailed at an airport while trying to leave North Korea. An American government plane picked up Fowle and flew him to Guam. This really brings to my attention how much some countries don’t approve of others religion. Because this man only just left a bible at his hotel room, he was jailed for about 5 months. Also, even though we welcome this decision, America still has two other of it’s citizens imprisoned there. Matthew Miller, based on my research, was imprisoned for committing “acts hostile” to North Korea and Kenneth Bae was also imprisoned for attempting to “overthrow the North Korean government”. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf states that the US government is trying to work on their cases and wants North Korea to immediately release them. If North Korea’s accusations of these men are false, based on the US government’s case, they should be released. But Flowe’s reason for punishment was very different from Miller or Bae’s reasons. Flowe left a bible at a hotel room but Bae tried to overthrow the government. Wouldn’t America also arrest foreigners for trying something as serious as overthrowing the government? Even though Flowle was imprisoned for just “violating tourist rules”, he stated his sentenced wasn’t that bad. If Bae really did attempt to overthrow the government there, I believe his sentence should be much longer than Flowe’s sentence. Because he is an American citizen they should release him right away? Also, Miller (the other person imprisoned) was accused of tearing his tourist visa and seeking refuge upon entry. Hopefully, the trials for these two men will go well and they will get what they deserve.
I think this is a strange incident. I think I have that view because in America some religions are ostracized but not to the extent that they go to jail for it. On the other hand flowle should abide by the North Korean rules if his offense would cost him time behind bars. Also, airport security in North Korea should've checked his bags beforehand if they knew he was a foreigner.
DeleteOn Wednesday, the Philae probe, a mechanical space traveler, touched down on its target: a comet named 67P that is some 310 million miles from Earth. The reason this is so significant is the fact that this is the first soft landing. All other probes have ended up crashing into the comet or having a very rough landing.
ReplyDeleteHowever, there is a glitch, says ESA. After leaving the mother ship Rosetta and descending, the probe may have bounced on the surface of the comet rather than land softly. Comet 67P has a very weak gravity, so there were anchoring harpoons installed into the probe; however, they failed to fire so at the moment, Philae is not firmly secure.
The scientists say that maybe they didn't once, but they landed twice. Either way this is to go down in the history books of great achievements in space history.
Two twin sisters were separated at birth and they had never met until two years ago. Bordier first saw her sister on a Youtube video her friend sent her. At first she thought it was her, then she realized it was a girl who looked exactly like her that lived in the United States. Borider learned that the girl’s name was Futerman, they shared the same birthday and were both adopted from South Korea. Eventually Borider contacted Futerman through Facebook. Bordier says they have a very strong bond that they can’t explain. When they met they both thought it felt strange and scary. A documentary is now being produced of them. They are also trying to help adoptees with family reunions and other issues they could encounter. I think it’s really cool how twins got separated at birth and then reunited. It’s like something that would be a movie except it’s real life, which is really cool. It’s weird that they went their whole life not thinking they had a twin and then realizing they’ve been wrong the whole time. I also think it’s good that they’re trying to help other adoptees now.
ReplyDeleteCredit Card Thieves Make A Profit With Diesel Fuel
ReplyDeleteCameras caught criminals at gas stations using "stolen credit cards" to fill up to 92 gallons of fuel. They then use those gallons to sell to truckers for cheaper prices, making them economically more desired. This is called "Pump and Dump," A culprit of this act would be Edwin Ramos, a 36 year old who had bought $360 worth of gas. There is also Jorge Ramirez, who is believed to be the "ringleader" to the Pump and Dump. He has not yet entered a plea. I have to admit, it is a really smart way to make profit. Of course, it's not the right thing. They are almost evil geniuses. Though, this is a very serious crime, especially when it's based on one of the most economically needed things today. It's a total waste of Diesel fuel. Not to mention that it's utterly dangerous, carrying fuel in a motor vehicle. It was said that it takes place mostly in the Los Angeles area, hopefully no other place in the U.S. For the sake of the fuel economy, the police better find and stop these criminals.
I have to admit it is smart, however it obviously is not the right thing to do. This event will probably spread and it will be occurring more and more throughout the states. My guess is that this event spread, but their will be a greater amount of security to offset the action. Stolen credit cards are a big problem in our society today, and it seems like almost every day their is another criminal on the news stealing someone's credit card. If the credit card owners could report fraudulent more often and quicker, then this could be prevented earlier rather then later.
DeleteThat's incredible! The mind of the criminal is not lacking intellect, and it seems that the way things were working for both Ramirez and Ramos was profitable until they were caught. This certainly speaks volumes about the idea that money doesn't make you a better person, or more successful. Ultimately, however, these criminals were ceased, but the idea is still floundering, so keep your eye on your credit cards.
DeleteI have no idea where people come up with this stuff, although it is a bad idea, it is very smart. It is wrong how the gas is brought from stolen credit cards and it just proves how careful you have to be with your belongings. Gas is already expensive as it is and it is a valuable resource too. It should not be bought in bulk like that because it can be dangerous. It is a great way to make a profit but it is very wrong.
DeleteThat is pretty smart of the criminals to earn money, but they went about it in the wrong way. They do need to find the rest of the criminal, because what they did is against the law.
DeleteThis is a good tactic that they used to get the money but it is wrongful of them to do that. They should find all the criminals because of this unlawful act.
DeleteThe Philae probe is alive and well a day after the first successful spacecraft landing on a comet, but scientists are still trying to figure out exactly where it is on its new home.Officials at the European Space Agency mission control in Darmstadt, Germany, confirmed Thursday that the lander, launched from the Rosetta spacecraft circling comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, is busily sending data back to Earth -- including the first images ever taken from the surface of a comet. While it was touching down, the lander bounced twice -- almost as if the comet were a trampoline. The first bounce lasted almost two hours and took the lander about two-thirds of a mile above the comet's surface. The second bounce was smaller and lasted just a few minutes, said Stephan Ulamec, the Philae landing manager. The craft's harpoons failed to attach it to the surface after touchdown Wednesday but it's now stable, scientists said."We know how we landed, but we don't know where," Ulamec said. "We landed three times."The lander then settled in a shadowy part of the comet near a cliff, where it is only getting 1 1/2 hours of sunlight a day. At its planned landing site, Philae would have gotten six or seven hours of sunlight. The difference is crucial because Philae will need to rely on solar power after its batteries run out after about 60 hours, and this will affect how much work the probe can do on the surface, mission officials said.
ReplyDelete"What is really impressive is not the degree of failure we encountered, but the degree of success we've had," said Jean-Pierre Bibring, Philae's lead scientist and a principal investigator on two of its instruments. "It is amazing where we are. We landed on a comet. We are really at the limit of what humankind could do now -- it is gorgeous where we are."
Landing on a comet is probably one of the greatest things to be done after 1969's Apollo 11 landing on the moon. The ESA and its partners should feel proud and excited with this breakthrough. I get daily updates on the subject and things seem to be going well. Soon we will be able to land people on Mars and maybe other celestial bodies, until then what a great day and achievement in the space community.
DeleteThis is really cool, It is definitely one of the greatest achievement by man. they should celebrate this achievement, i hope this is one of many greatest achievements
DeleteFor a Liberian Family, Ebola Turns Loving Care Into Deadly Risk – New York Times
ReplyDeleteKaizer Dour from Monrovia, Liberia was a rising star in Liberia’s top basketball league. He earned the title of Liberia’s most valuable player last season and at the age of 22 he had the dream of making it to the Los Angeles Lakers. However, he died of Ebola at the edge of a mangrove swamp. For a proper burial, strangers carried his rotting corpse into a dugout canoe for a burial. Later found out, Kaizer’s father infected his son by the Ebola virus, while Kaizer passed the virus to his two aunts. Altogether, seven members from three generations died in quick succession of one another. His mother survived through the tragic event that was occurring. Kaizer’s mother was blamed for the calamity, so she decided to go into hiding, as she was known as an outcast in her family’s hour of greatest need. Kaizer’s family survived Liberia’s civil war from 1989 to 2003, but could not survive this evil virus known as Ebola. The Ebola virus was too strong to survive. A Pentecostal minister who knows Kaizer’s family described how Ebola is creating a lot of divisions within families along with hatred inside families. Such a sad event to occur, but it happens to families every day in Liberia. It was not the first family to become victim to the Ebola virus and surely won’t be the last. I would hate to be in the mother’s “shoes” right now. I couldn’t imagine how she feels being the only one left in the close family.

ReplyDeleteTeen e-cigarette use is on the rise, CDC says
ReplyDeleteLike the rest of the United States, teens' tobacco use has been generally declining over the years. But right now, e-cigarettes are on the rise in high schools, according to just-released CDC data. Every year, the CDC conducts a National Youth Tobacco Survey, a questionnaire, and the results from the 2013 survey of 20,000 students are in. The number of high school students who said they've used an e-cigarette in the last 30 days was 4.5 percent, up from 2.8 percent in the last year's survey, which itself was up from 1.5 percent the year before that. The percentage who said they'd tried e-cigs for the first time was also up, to 12 percent compared with last year's 10 percent. About 46 percent of the students said they'd used tobacco in some form in their lifetimes. For middle schoolers, also questioned, the number who said they'd used e-cigarettes in the past month was flat at 1.1 percent, although the number of students trying them for the first time slightly increased from 2.7 percent to 3 percent. Cigar and cigarette use declined slightly for both groups, but overall tobacco use stayed about flat. The FDA is in the middle of finalizing new rules for e-cigarettes that would ban their sale to anyone under 18 and require ID for purchase.
This is sort of a win/lose situation. It's good that less teens are smoking cigarettes and using e-cigs instead, but they can still be harmful. You could get a withdrawal from the nicotine and there are still harmful chemicals, but an e-cig does not smell or have nearly as many harmful chemicals as a regular cigarette. I'd rather be next to someone with an e-cig than with a cigarette.
Unfortunately, teenagers result to cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs to relieve the angst in their lives. The fact that parents/guardians don't notice this boggles my mind. Police need to start cracking down and seeing this as possession with intent to distribute, and make these acts illegal. People can make the choice but not until your 18.
DeleteTeens should not have to look to cigarettes or other drugs, we are too young to get addicted to things or ruining theirs bodies and lives over something stupid. We need to stop this and crack down on this, also i don't understand how these kids parents can just look passed all of this and still let their kids do these things.
DeleteTeens smoking cigarettes or any drugs should not be permitted for it is dangling there lives, even though they might not be noticing it now. The social media and music of this century almost always state that doing these sorta of things is okay, but it is not. Anyone under 18 should be required ID to purchase.
Delete
DeleteTeens should not be looking to drugs and smoking to feel better, we have many resources to help them. In this world with all we know about how these things ruin our body and kill us is crazy for teens to still was to try and do these, this really needed to be cracked down on so we don’t have the kids doing these things or help the ones before they start.
Factory Farming: Cruelty to Animals
ReplyDeleteShare on facebookShare on twitterShare on pinterest_shareShare on emailMore Sharing Services
On today’s factory farms, animals are crammed by the thousands into filthy, windowless sheds and confined to wire cages, gestation crates, barren dirt lots, and other cruel confinement systems. These animals will never raise their families, root around in the soil, build nests, or do anything that is natural and important to them. Most won’t even feel the sun on their backs or breathe fresh air until the day they are loaded onto trucks bound for slaughter. The green pastures and idyllic barnyard scenes of years past are now distant memories.
The factory farming industry strives to maximize output while minimizing costs—always at the animals’ expense. The giant corporations that run most factory farms have found that they can make more money by cramming animals into tiny spaces, even though many of the animals get sick and some die. The industry journal National Hog Farmer explains, “Crowding pigs pays,” and egg-industry expert Bernard Rollins writes that “chickens are cheap; cages are expensive.”
Cows, calves, pigs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, and other animals live in extremely stressful conditions:
Kept in small cages or jam-packed sheds or on filthy feedlots, often with so little space that they can’t even turn around or lie down comfortably
Deprived of exercise so that all their bodies’ energy goes toward producing flesh, eggs, or milk for human consumption
Fed drugs to fatten them faster and keep them alive in conditions that could otherwise kill them
Genetically altered to grow faster or to produce much more milk or eggs than they naturally would (many animals become crippled under their own weight and die just inches away from water and food)
When they have finally grown large enough, animals raised for food are crowded onto trucks and transported over many miles through all weather extremes, typically without food or water, to the slaughterhouse. Those who survive this nightmarish journey will have their throats slit, often while they are still conscious. Many remain conscious when they are plunged into the scalding-hot water of the defeathering or hair-removal tanks or while their bodies are being skinned or hacked apart.

I find it very inhumane to kill animals for meat in this way. I understand that either way, they are dying to feed us, but just because they are dying, doesn't mean it has to be so violent. I think that they should be treated very well and carefully put down. Turkeys are hung by their necks and slaughtered alive, as well as many other animals used for meat. It is not fair to the animals or the people that believe in humane slaughter.
The sad thing is that most people don't care how animals are treated, they just care if they're on their dinner table in the end. I agree that we can provide cleaner shelters and be more gentle with them if we're just going to kill them anyway. There is no need for the cruelty and inhumane acts.
DeleteToday we are going to talk about an article on Mayonnaise. I don’t see what’s so interesting about Hellmann’s mayonnaise that they had to publish an article on it, but you know anything to please the people. Hellmann’s is a brand of food that is sold by the company Unilever that is suing another mayonnaise company. A company in California labeled its egg-free product “Just Mayo”, but the flaw in their advertisement was that mayonnaise is defined as a spread containing egg. Either Hellmann’s couldn’t deal with the competition or they just prefer mayonnaise to be real mayonnaise. Unilever is suing just Mayo for false advertisement. The question that is being asked is why does Unilever care what Just Mayo calls their product. Since Unilever surpasses the sale of ketchup having a worth of about $2 billion annually it really should matter what this eggless company does with their fake mayo anyway. The company Hampton Creek (owner of Just Mayo) views this mayonnaise war as silly. They stated that the company uses Mayo and not mayonnaise. A bystander of the Hampton Creek Company stated that by filing this lawsuit against a small name Mayo Company that are receiving more publicity than Unilever ever intended.

ReplyDeleteSpacecraft Lands on Comet 4 Billion Miles Away
Approximately 4 billion miles away from Earth, Scientists landed a space shuttle on a moving comet, this team of scientists made history on November 13, 2014. The purpose of this Mission was to better our understanding of the origin of our Universe. Paolo Ferri is the head of the team, the team works for the European Space Agency, the spacecraft was know as, 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The scientists believe that comets are the secret to discovering the origins of our Universe, comets have remained unchanged since the beginning of their existence, so theoretically if they’re the same, the minerals and other soil samples should be unchanged. This Spacecraft was launched 10 years ago in 2004, and just now reached its 4 billion mile destination; the spacecraft had to slingshot around Earth 3 times, and 1 time around Mars to develop enough speed to get to the comet. Studying this Comet will also help to test the theory that comets brought water and life to Earth Billions of years ago. The lander that is on the comet will remain on the comet for the rest of time, it will be stuck to the comet for man more centuries to come.
It is so cool how we have the technology to study comets, go into space, and to learn about life. Especially that far away. I can not even imagine traveling 4 billion miles in a space shuttle and then landing on a moving comet. I think this is a great way to understand the universe because like you said they have remained unchanged since they have existed. This is a brilliant way to understand the universe and life.
DeleteNewsela- Schools use technology to keep a very close eye on kids
ReplyDeleteSome schools in the state of Washington are trying to keep track on where students are at all times. They make them carry special cards so that they know where they are. They say that this technology makes schools safer and run better. Parents and lawmakers are not very pleased with this new idea. They feel that the schools do not need to know certain information. They are also trying to make students do fingerprint and eyeball scanners. Florida, New Hampshire, Missouri does not support the idea at all. They feel that students should not be forced to carry cards that track them. At least 14 states passed a law limiting the tracking technology. I feel that they are doing this for safety reasons. On the other hand, I agree that students should not be forced to carry around cards with a computer chip in it.
In my opinion, tracking devices are for criminals, dogs, and those that absolutely need to be tracked for health reasons or other reasons. The only reason you should need your eyeball or your fingerprint scanned is if they think that you are going to commit a crime and as a student I would be very uncomfortable. Tracking where a student is every second of the day is equivalent to putting them in a bubble and that bubble will pop if they have too much fun.
DeleteThese are scary steps toward a totalitarian society, the likes of which we've been warned about in countless pieces of literature, movies, and other media. We are legislating our freedoms away in the name of "safety," but once the freedoms are gone is the world really "safe," or is it "sheltered." Part of being human is taking risks, and as Kobi said we can't be a bubble society. We can't grow in a bubble. There are terrible things in this world, but the answer isn't sheltering ourselves from them, it's reducing ignorance so that they don't continue to happen.
DeleteRyan Tannehill's 2 late TDs rally Dolphins to rivalry win over Bills
ReplyDeleteComing off the dramatic loss to the lions last week, the Dolphins were tied with the bills at 5-4 and needed a win. Who were they playing? Of course the Bills who already beat Miami once in Buffalo but this game was in Miami… This season has been all about the rookie receivers but one overlooked rookie is Jarvis Landry, the rookie has been playing good but lost a fumble while being up by only 3, so the fumble could have been very critical. The fumble led to nothing and Landry helped the Dolphins win this game with a late touchdown thrown by Ryan Tannehill who as been playing much better these last few games compared to his first few this season. Miami trailed 9-3 before outscoring its AFC East rival 19-0 over the final 18 minutes. The Dolphins improved to 6-4, their best record after 10 games since 2008. Winning this game helps a lot because Miami virtually knocks out Buffalo from playoff contention and put themselves in the running for a wild card and if the Patriots can lose a few games including the one against Miami in December, maybe the dolphins can even take the division.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/11/15/obamas-immigration-overhaul-could-put-burden-on-states/
ReplyDeleteBefore the year is over, Obama plans to make an executive action in which he will grant permanent amnesty to 4 million illegal immigrants. What this means is that he is allowing 4 million people who should not be here to stay and reap the same benefits that true American citizens have. If you wish to enter the country, you must go through the naturalization process just as so many have gone through. People should not have the ability to enter this country without due process just how the police can't arrest suspects without due process, checks and balances. This administration feels that executive action is a free pass to rule this country with an iron fist. Executive action should never be used unless there is a diehard emergency and congress has not taken action. The administration needs to figure out priorities and work with the Senate AND Congress to make America better.
Thanks Obama!
DeleteIf Obama allows 4 million illegal immigrants to stay in America that means, there are approximately 4 million jobs that citizens of our country need, they cant have. I think corporations and businesses should do mandatory citizenship and work visa checks, and turn everyone in that doesn't have a citizenship card, or a work visa to the USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services). Then, if there are less illegal immigrants in the United States, then finally the economy may start to rebuild itself.
Brendan,
DeleteI am in complete agreement that the system of checks and balances is a system that works quite well in this country. However, I also feel that research involved in our President's reasoning may prove to be interesting. While I do agree that Illegal Immigrants should be lead through the process of becoming a naturalized citizen, it's interesting how many American born citizens know less about the foundation of this great nation than naturalized citizens. This is noted due to the testing required to earn the right to a better life. Natural born Americans tend to have the attitude of entitlement to things such as jobs and free health care, and I disagree with this attitude. Therefore, maybe it isn't our "right" to a career here, over an immigrant (naturalized citizen) simply due to our place of birth.

ReplyDeleteSatanist are trying to give handouts in schools to children. They are challenging the school board in Orange county to be able to distribute "kid friendly coloring books". They are saying if Christian handouts are allowed to be distributed in schools, then so should theirs, and if they cannot distribute their handouts, then no religious handouts of any kind should be distributed because it is unfair. I have no words for this. I just think this is flat out crazy.
As public schools are secular institutions paid for by the tax dollars of citizens of every faith, while it may sound crazy, it's what the law stipulates. It is unconstitutional for a public school to only allow Christian pamphlets. Either, the school allows the Satanists to distribute their booklets, or they disallow any religious organization from distributing anything. Schools and public institutions cannot show preference to any one religion, regardless if it is what most people believe in. That is why we have a Festivus Pole in Tallahassee.
DeleteFrom the realms of science fiction to science fact, the Rosetta mission reached its climax this week when when the mission's scientists succeeded in landing a washing machine-sized probe named Philae on a moving comet after a 6.4 billion mile journey. It has been a decade-long chase around the solar system for the spacecraft to catch up with its constantly moving target, Churyumov-Gerasimenko -- better known as Comet 67P. For many who gaze dreamily at the stars above, this is one of the most exciting thing to happen in recent memory. But why should everyone else care? Rosetta landing: 10 years in the making Rosetta landing: 10 years in the making
ReplyDeleteTo answer this question, CNN has brought together five experts in space science to explain why the Rosetta mission is a monumental achievement.Matt Taylor, European Space Agency project scientist:
Rosetta is a big deal, enough to be the sexiest mission ever. Rosetta has rendezvoused, orbited and will soon deploy a lander to the comet surface. If that isn't enough firsts, the orbiter will remain alongside the comet for over a year, watching it grow in activity as it approaches the Sun, getting to within 180 million km in summer next year, when the comet will be expelling hundreds of kilograms of material every second.
This is incredible, it shows us how we are one step closer to achieve what we could only dream about. This breakthrough can lead to more improved technologies that will be able to carry humans to other planets, and send other shuttles to investigate planets and other galaxies that are out of our reach

ReplyDeleteABC News - Charles Manson Gets Marriage License
ReplyDeleteMass murderer Charles Manson plans to marry a 26-year-old woman who left her Midwestern home and spent the past nine years trying to help exonerate him. Afton Elaine Burton, the raven-haired bride-to-be, said she loves the man convicted in the notorious murders of seven people, including pregnant actress Sharon Tate. No date has been set, but a wedding coordinator has been assigned by the prison to handle the nuptials, and the couple has until early February to get married before they would have to reapply. The Kings County marriage license, viewed Monday by The Associated Press, was issued Nov. 7 for the 80-year-old Manson and Burton, who lives in Corcoran — the site of the prison — and maintains several websites advocating his innocence. Burton, who goes by the name "Star," told the AP that she and Manson will be married next month.
"Y'all can know that it's true," she said. "It's going to happen."
"I love him," she added. "I'm with him. There's all kinds of things."
However, as a life prisoner with no parole date, Manson is not entitled to family visits, a euphemism for conjugal visits.Tate's sister, Debra, who acts as a spokeswoman for the families of Manson's victims, said the impending marriage is "ludicrous."
"I think it's insane," she said. "What would any young woman in her right mind want with an 80-year-old man?"
As for Manson's motives, she said, "The devil is alive and well."
Burton gave an interview a year ago to Rolling Stone magazine in which she said she and Manson were planning to marry. But Manson, who became notorious in 1969 as the leader of a roving "family" of young killers, was less certain about tying the knot.
"That's a bunch of garbage," Manson said in the December 2013 interview. "That's trash. We're playing that for public consumption."
Asked Monday about those comments, Burton said, "None of that's true," adding that they're waiting for the prison to complete their paperwork. California Department of Corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton confirmed to the AP that the license had been transmitted to the prison.
Burton said the wedding might have happened earlier if Manson did not have "some situations" at the prison. Thornton explained that in February, Manson had three violations for possession of a weapon, threatening staff and refusal to provide a urine sample. Further details on the violations were not immediately available. Burton said the prison holds marriages on the first Saturday of each month and she expects to be married in an inmate visiting room at the prison. Manson and his prospective spouse also would be allowed to invite 10 guests who are not inmates. Thornton also confirmed that Manson can have a wedding at the prison and invite an officiant from outside the prison to perform the ceremony.
The producer of the film series, "The Hangover." Helps adolescents in the juvenile detention centers in his area by teaching creative writing classes. They get to express themselves and are inspired to live new lives on the other side. They listen to music and get a special freedom that they usually wouldn't get.
ReplyDeleteI believe that this is an amazing outlet for the kids in the juvenile centers. They finally have an inspiration to work toward when they leave. They won't turn back to their old ways as often if they have another option to turn to. I feel that if there were one of these classes at every detention center in America that it would make the world a better place and today's youth wouldn't be judged so critically.
Ebola Vaccine, Ready for Test, Sat on the Self
ReplyDeleteAlmost a decade ago, the United States and Canada created a vaccine that was 100% effective in protecting monkeys against the Ebola virus. Unfortunately, the vaccine sat on a self, but now they are testing the vaccine on humans since the virus has killed nearly 5,000 people. The vaccine development stalled because it was very rare, until now. Drug companies do not want to create a lot of the drug because countries where it’s most popular cannot afford it. I think they need to try to cure some of the people in Africa even though they can’t afford it because that’s where the disease originated. As Ebola began to spread more, the government has decided to fund the new drug. There are already several candidates willing to test out the new drug. There have been 19 cases that have been treated outside of West Africa. These drug companies are willing to put in a lot of money for the vaccine and I think that it is a great thing because it is a really deadly disease. Vaccines are usually used before the person is exposed to the disease and that is what the Ebola vaccine is trying to do. I think it is kind of cool how they already had a vaccine before the Ebola virus outbreak.
Finally, there is an Ebola Virus vaccine, maybe if their is a vaccine for this deadly virus our country can begin to sustain its fear for the disease. If this vaccine actually works, I believe that some corporations should put money together to be able to cover the cost of the vaccine to cure many people in Africa of the disease. This disease has been around for approximately 35 years, and now we finally have a vaccine for the disease that has killed around 5,000 people.
DeleteIn Greece there are compounds that house disabled kids. The particular one in the article is underfunded, understaffed, overpopulated by the kids, and has bad conditions. There is roughly 65-kids at the facility and typically there is a nurse and assistant to care for everyone on their floor. The kids are locked up in cages that are not to protect them, but instead to protect the staff. Inside their cage they only have a bed, no personal items. Their parents do not visit them, and most of the parents try and forget that they are at the facility. Their has been cases where the father and the doctors have told the mother that their child had died after labor, but the child had lived through labor and was instead taken to one of the few caged-compounds. The facility has had volunteers helping out, and they did not like the way the compounds were organized. So they had sent out letters and email, but most were either ignored or didn’t say about anything they planned on changing. Also, at the facility there have been many deaths that could have been prevented. One kid chocked on an object, and another had fabric and bandages in his/her stomach.
ReplyDeleteThis is terrible. They sometimes can't control their actions because of their disability. Why don't you put yourself in their shoes and see how dreadful it is to not be able to control your own body such as (walking, eating, going to the restroom, etc.)? They're still human beings with a problem, not animals.
DeleteOkay that is really not right. I myself have a disability, A.D.D (Attention Distractibility Deficit {Like A.D.H.D but subtract the Hyperactive.}) The only way I can "Control" it is my Medication but to lock these children that have special needs in a CAGE?! That is absolutely horrible! "Protecting the staff" is a load of BS, and to be completely honest if they locked me in a cage and I never saw my parents, whenever I had the chance I'd attack them. These kids should not be treated like wild animals, heck, animals shouldn't even be caged! The people there are monsters, mostly how the didn't even try and prevent a death of a child! A disabled child. This is absolutely inhumane!
DeleteCNN: Why Will Muschamps Florida career was doomed from the beginning
ReplyDeleteThis was obvious from the start, an inevitability from day one. Florida fired Will Muschamp on Sunday, four years after the Big Mistake, when he was hired. Some people will look back at this as one of the biggest mistake hires of all time in college football history. It was an impulse hire, and Florida is now lost in the SEC. There is no way they can overcome the growing Alabama team, Auburn, and the Mississippi’s. Muschamp was a top defensive coordinator but was no where qualified to obtain the head coaching job at Florida. His years left doubt in the fans and disappointment in the program. They called Muschamp the “Boom Coach” because of his hot head towards his team and his colleagues. Muschamp went through three offensive coordinators at his years at UF, they just couldn’t seem to stick with the program. Muschamps team went 4-8 last year, and it was amazing that Muschamp even made the decision to come back for another season. The loss to Missouri was almost a definite that Muschamp was going to be gone soon, but after the win against Georgia they couldn’t fire him. The loss this Saturday to South Carolina sealed the deal, and Muschamp was finally fired that Sunday.
Do you know that nature can help your health? It increases the amount of vitamin D you get normally. It can reduce your stress and adrenaline, blood pressure levels and heart rate. I believe that's true because while I usually bike eleven miles a day I feel different when I don't. Chronically high blood pressure can lead to heart disease, digestive problems anxiety and depression. For some people, though, it is hard to get out sometimes. Why not bring nature to yourself then? You can use forest sounds, scents and sensations to feel calm indoors. Does being around nature have calming effects on you? Sometimes just sitting in my front yard can relieve my headaches. Our body's relaxation is called our parasympathetic response. Natural killer cells also increase with the amount of time you spend outside. Natural killer cells are critical for our immune system. Nature can also increase your concentration.
ReplyDeleteThis morning at Florida State University students huddled together in the aisles of a packed campus library after a gunman opened fire, injuring three people. Two of the people who were shot were taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, one was in a critical condition, one was stable and the other was released. All three of the victiums were students at the university. When police confronted the man it ended in a shoot up and ended up shooting and killing the school shooter.
ReplyDeleteLost in questions of “Why would someone shoot and attack other students.” “This is the hardest part of any investigation” stated detective DeLeo. The shootings started on a early Thursday morning with about 300-400 students studying for exams.
“The only positive note from this is that the body count isn’t higher.” Said a detective. The campus texted students telling them to take refuge. Most students left the campus out of fear and morn of the lost students. A cell phone video recorded from the inside of the library recording peoples reactions. A voice on the tape says “there has been shooting in the library” showing students laying in the aisles of the library. Very tragic day in Florida State history.
This was absolutely saddening. The way that many other rival schools called themselves "seminoles" to support what FSU was going through was inspirational. One of my old friends and old section leader both pictures pictures from their dorms which show that they were right next to the library where the shooting took place. I think we are all just glad that anything else happened.
DeleteThis is a very upsetting article and I hope the families who lost love ones on this day are okay. Its really crazy how far some people will go, killing students studying for exams in the library is pretty horrific. I think we need to be aware of more people like this and get them help immediately so that they don’t go on a rampage. I think it was very considerate of all the other colleges supporting Florida State throughout the whole situation.
DeleteIts crazy to think people can do this. They do not care at all for the lives of innocent people struggling to create a better life for themselves. There should be more security in schools to prevent things like this from happening
DeleteThis was such a sad situation. I hope that they find a way to advance and tighten their security.
Deletehttps://gma.yahoo.com/teens-quick-thinking-helped-save-baby-stopped-breathing-125037953--abc-news-topstories.html
ReplyDeleteOn November 17th, 2014 7:50 a.m., In a Missouri Walmart, an 11 month old infant was found not breathing by her mother. A group of citizens gathered around, 17-year-old Abby Snodgrass heard the commotion and rushed over to the suffocating child and gave her CPR that Abby learned in school. After continuous tries of CPR the baby breathed again “I can’t explain how happy I was when she started to breathe,” Snodgrass said. “It was a huge relief.” During the CPR She thought “What if this doesn’t work?’ And I just had to push it out of my mind and keep going because I knew that’s what I had to do”. Abby was very brave and a quick thinker when taking action to save the innocent child’s life. The family is very grateful to have their daughter back in her home with her family which she can spend the rest of her life with, thanks to Abby’s quick-thinking and preparation of CPR from her school. Without Abby’s actions, the child might have died from suffocation before the ambulance came. I believe all schools should teach students to master CPR because you will never know when this important lesson will be needed to be used in real life situations.
I think that what Abby did was amazing. She, a 17-year-old saved an 11 month old infant by giving her CPR. I don't think that very many young people would know what to do in a situation similar to the one of which Abby was in due to the fact that not very many schools teach students to master CPR when they should because you never know when there might be a situation where someone is in need of help.
DeleteMove over, Barbie? Make room for "average" Lammily doll
ReplyDeleteTo summerize this article, the Barbie company has released a new barbie included average body size, cellulite, and acne. Honestly, I think this is the best thing that has ever been made. Finally little girls can play with something that it more realistic than a doll with the waist they size of a piece of rice. People have mixed feelings due to the new doll which I don't really get. It's finally a doll correctly portion to show girls what real women look like. I think the controversy about it is unnecessary and unneeded. If my kid is happy with her cellulite filled barbie doll, and realizes that all things aren;t perfect, I'd feel like my job as a parent is done. The article it's self plays both sides of the argument, talking about if the doll should be sold more and be banned, but I think it should be sold everywhere. I feel like it says a message stating that average is beautiful.
From the article - The doll, with its wide hips, thick legs and rounded rump, goes against the concept of the perfect figure.
"The message I want to send is that it's not what you look like. That doesn't define you. What you do does," he said.
Lamm said he took inspiration for the doll from his own experience in high school, which he described as the "worst time in my life."
"I really cared about how I looked, and I didn't feel good about myself," he said.
I agree, any size is beautiful as long as you love you and your body. I don't mind having the original Barbie because, honestly, kids at that age (me being one) don't think about the body of Barbie. At that age, we're not that mature and nor do we even know what the word cellulite means. When a young boy or girl, you have Barbie because she can go on all these adventures and is independent as well as having an enormous wardrobe. You didn't get Barbie because of the way her body is proportioned or the amount of cellulite, etc.. Don't get me wrong, both realistic and original Barbie are both beautiful, but for crying out loud, it's a kid's toy. We don't need to over think everything in life, we have bigger fish to fry. Instead of parent's worrying about the size of Barbie and her proportions, have parents encourage their daughters to love their body the way they are.

ReplyDeleteShould the U.S. Merge With Mexico? A New Freakonomics Radio Podcast
The merger that is being brought up in this blog post that is similar to a business merger between two companies like Microsoft and Apple, which would be mutually beneficial. The idea is not that United States would swallow Mexico and Canada but form some kind of union like the European Union. Where the three nations would share there trade system, customs union, and etc. Dubner brought up a podcast listeners (Dan Woerner) question that started the debate. Then Dubner spoke of the last few times the United States has made land deals with Mexico through war. Next he talked to Jim Cramer host of mad money, who was utterly enthusiastic about such a union because he loves the country of Mexico and owns property there. Former president of Mexico Vicente Fox spoke afterwards and revealed that he wasn’t opposed to the idea but he didn’t think any of the countries were ready for such a thing. The last important speaker to talk is Austin Goolsbee former White House chief economist who explained how this would happen if it would ever be a real reality. Honestly, I could see a North American Union with shared goal in mind for these three countries. but for you to really understand the topic go ahead and listen to the podcast.

Response to Mr. De Ce blog post
I have used Con Academy and several other learning videos, but personally Con Academy is not my favorite. Me as a student being taught throughout the past eleven years, my best way of learning is through watching and listening, then taking a test on the subject. But from what you have said, my way of learning is not the traditional way and I would probably have to write countless papers before the test part in the traditional method. I also know that several of my fellow peers excel and things that I could never dream of doing myself. As my fellow students and I have grown those distinctions grow deeper further separating us making it easier to see there is no standardized student so I agree with your overlying statement.

I now fully understand the scientific importance of this monumental achievement thanks to your blog post. This reminds me of a board game that I played last weekend (11/23/14) called space empires where you are playing as nations Space research divisions like NASA. The goal of the game is to have most victory points be trying to be the first to send people, build stations, and colonize planets, moons, and even asteroids. And one of the missions was to successfully land astronauts on a Comet and bring them back to earth.

The World Trade Center's window washers have suffered a very traumatic event this month. These window washers reportedly (ABC News) fell from the 104th floor (at 1,776 ft high), the tallest building in both the US and the entire Western Hemisphere, to the 68th floor. This incident was due to the left side of the rope had too much slack, causing the entire platform to slip and turn vertical! These window washers dangled from the tallest building in the nation, surrounded by policemen and firefighters attempting to provide an escape for the window washers. However, the window washers were stuck for an hour and a half an eventually slid down to the 24th floor. These men were in their safety harnesses, and followed necessary precautions even in the midst of plummeting down The World Trade Center. A diamond tipped glass saw; provided a gateway to freedom, however, these men were diagnosed with mild Hypothermia as the only health issue.
ReplyDeleteWith a personal phobia of heights, this would never cross my mind as an exciting career. However, this event goes to show the real possibility that even firemen and police officers cannot save you from plummeting down The World Trade Center in a timely manner. Therefore, I’ll never window wash a building labeled “The Tallest Building in the Nation,” because life gets too real on the 104th floor of The World Trade Center, when the protective forces feel inadequate to save you.
This goes to show that even some of the easiest jobs can be dangerous if not handled in the correct way, but at least they were able to be saved and no injuries occurred from the incident. I don't think this job is for me either, being somewhat afraid of heights.
DeletePrince William, Princess Kate Begin 3-Day Visit in US
ReplyDeleteThe Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived in New York City earlier today and was escorted by lots of cops. It was also very cold out, but they're probably used to it because they're from the UK. They arrived late afternoon in JFK airport in NYC on a British Airways flight, and was greeted by the the British ambassador to the US and the US chief of protocol. The couple is also expecting a child within the coming months, with Kate showing off her small baby bump already. They have an exciting weekend planned out in the big american city, including a visit to the 9/11 memorial and a basketball game. They will also meet up with the president of the United States during their vacation and do some charity work. I feel like this news article is completely pointless and should not have been posted to begin with, considering there are far more important things to be talking about. Instead of getting off to rich people's lives, americans should instead be educating themselves on the important events in the news and how it affects them.
Because out of all of the tragedy in the world, the only thing people care about apparently in the news according to the ABC is about royalty visiting an enraged country.
CNN News- "Missing Mexican student's remains identified"
ReplyDeleteIn late September 43 College students in Mexico went missing, and investigations to find them have been nonstop since. Sadly as of December 6th, DNA testing of burnt bone fragment found in a plastic bag has been identified as Alexander Mora Venancio. Authorities believe the students' remains were burned at a landfill, then placed inside plastic bags and thrown into a river, but only Alexander’s has been identified as of now. Protests in Mexico City have been going on and the parents of the children acknowledge the remains found but the search for the others are far from over. “If these murderers think that with a DNA match of one of our boys, we are going to stop and cry, we want to tell them that they have been mistaken, that after today, this day of action will continue until we find the remaining 42 alive," says Felipe de la Cruz, a spokesman for the families. The investigation is still going under the president’s orders and will continue until all the culprits have been arrested. Drug traffickers have given confessions to authorities that the students were rounded up by corrupt police based of a local mayor’s orders to be delivered to a drug gang then murdered. 44 police officers have been arrested so far, and at least 80 people have been arrested for the disappearances and deaths, authorities are also still looking for more police to arrest. The governor of Guerrero has also taken a leave of absence due to the criticism of how slowly he took to react to the situation. The disappearances of the students have sparked protests all over Mexico and people have begun to take action against the state of government of Mexico. “Too many people disappear in Mexico and are never found” It’s a devastating thing to happen to the young students and their families. For police and government officials to also be involved make things even worse. All over the world people are beginning to protest against their governments for wrong doings and it shows the time is now for change in the world.I hope that for Mexico, these students are the last straw and more forceful action is taken to have better control of the government across the country along with the decrease of drug trafficking. I give my blessings to the parents and families and hope their loss can help make a change for the better.
‘Peter Pan Live’ Ratings: Not ‘Sound of Music’ Big But Strong for NBC Thursday
ReplyDelete-Variety
On thursday night at 8, Peter Pan Live aired on NBC for about 3 hours showing of sword fight duels and imaginative flying all encompassed into song and dance to continue the musical tradition NBC continued on with from last year's Sound of Music performance with Carrie Underwood playing the lead, Maria. Peter Pan has had a lot of hype put up for it including the fact of Allison Williams as Peter Pan and Christopher Walken as Hook. The show had a great amount of viewings but did not in fact reach the amount from Sound of Music causing a bit of a stir with NBC. The show was built to also have a bit of controversy as they did in fact change the lyrics to one of the songs, Ugg a Wugg, so it didn't hold a seemingly not so stereotypical native american chant in the song. I feel this show had a great amount of work put into it but after watching it, could have done so much better. When you watch the show, you find stray, clear in sight, flying cables either attached to the actors or about to be attached to the actors, ruining the magic and fun for the viewers and ruining the illusion of Peter Pan's signature trait. With the let downs aside, it did pull through to be a good show for many and i am glad that classic Musical Theatre is slowly making its way back on to television and movie screens with Into the Woods coming soon as it shows a great new view of entertainment for many who have not been fully able to see shows as spectacular as these and pop culture finally spreading way for a unique type of entertainment.
I thought that the show was alright to be honest. It was definitely not as great as it put itself out to be. A lot of the singers weren't as strong as they could've casted it; they were out for popular actors instead of talent to draw in views. I also think that they should've casted Peter Pan as a boy and not as a girl. They should've had no problem looking for a young man who can sing that high.
DeleteMystery Solved- Pony Found Wandering Streets Reunited With Girl // Abc News When a shetland pony was found wandering the streets on Galena Street in Jurupa Valley, California, the sheriff’s deputy was very confused. It took a week for them to figure out who’s pony it was. Jorge Rodriguez, Olga Martin and their nine year old daughter Jolette was reunited with their shetland pony, after and apparently the parents are “Happy not to see her crying anymore." I bet it was getting annoying. The pony, 16 year old Blossom, was found in the yard of Edith Hernandez. Her mother let the sheriff’s deputy hold the pony in the family’s property, and "[The deputy] was probably making sure the pony wasn't hit by a car or causing an accident." According to the parents, Blossom probably escaped after her gate was accidentally left open. Apparently finding abandoned ponies and horses is actually not uncommon in Jarupa Valley. “But Blossom was described in "beautiful" condition. Besides the braided mane, Blossom had a new halter and a healthy weight, estimated to be between 400 and 500 pounds.” Maybe that kid should learn to keep her horse in the gates, especially when some of them cost more than some houses. So abc, props to you for making everyone was in on the story of this little pony, because these are the issues that matter.
ReplyDeleteThis originally peaked my interest because, honestly, I saw the word pony. I love horses, but that's not the point of my reply. After reading through, I've noticed that humanity has been restored in man kind. Yes, Jurupa Valley, California may get a lot of roaming and or loose horses, but the officers could report them to a local humane society or release them to the wild, but the officers go out of their way to locate the owners and by doing that, Jolette no longer had to cry day after day over her pony. Further down, it surprised me how the pony had a new halter and healthy weight, but yet again, I'm not sure how long the pony was gone for. But we can change the world, even if it means one pony at a time.
DeleteMany argue that if there were a camera on the officer then justice would have been more easily served on the Ferguson case. We already have cameras installed on the dashboards of the patrol cars, why not just put a camera on the police officer? By making officers have a body camera, cases of police brutality would be easily judged. But several challenges arise from this idea including when the cameras would be on, what the recordings would be used for, and how long these recordings are kept. Because no two police stations are the same these things will vary. If the camera is on during the entire shift of the officer, then it breaks their privacy rights. These recordings can be used to help “defend” an officer if he is accused of police brutality, but it can also be merged with other uses such as facial recognition software. There are many things that can go wrong as well. What if the camera all of a sudden malfunctions? How will the officer be covered then? There are many complications about this, but good can come from it as well.
ReplyDeletePutting cameras on officers would be a good idea. It would help end many cases and I think it would also help prevent officers from doing something unjust. It would defend officers and may also defend people in many cases. Although as stated in your post that recording the officers entire shift breaks their privacy right they could just record anything that happens when he is not within the perimeter of the vehicle or around others that are not officers. I mean lets face it, there are many ways to go around breaking privacy rights but will officers want to wear cameras during parts of their shift, and will they follow the rules that come along with wearing it?
DeleteLava flow inches closer to homes in Hawaiian community; evacuations possible/ CNN
ReplyDelete(http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/28/us/hawaii-volcano/index.html?hpt=hp_c2)
In Pahoa, Hawaii, Kilauea Volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island leaked molten lava, which slowly inched towards nearby homes and businesses causing officials to begin the preparation of evacuations, although many residents in the community have decided to leave on their own. Alii Hauanio has started packing his things, including his parents' memorabilia, CNN affiliate KHNL reported. His mom and dad lost their dream Kalapana beach home to lava flow in 1991, and Hauanio never thought he'd see his home meet the same fate, he told the station. This 2,000-degree river of molten rock has advanced among 12 homes and businesses as of which director of the Hawaii County Civil Defense, Darryl Oliveria, has stated. As the lava plunges through towns, it has engulfed fences, flowing over cemetery and neared major roads. On the Tuesday morning following, it set a wooden garden shed ablaze. The lava was about 200 yards from the closest home and moving in a northestern direction. As mentioned by Darryl Oliveria, Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency, “It was flowing 10 yards per hour.” The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency has rebuilt two gravel roads so residents may have additional escape routes from the lava flow. Power company crews have also installed 70-foot-tall poles with heat resistant protection to raise cables higher off the roads. Kristen Okinaka, a spokeswoman for the Hawaii Electric Light Company, said there were no outages due to the lava flow. "If for some reason someone can't get to our clinic, we will be there with the mobile unit," said Harold Wallace, CEO of Bay Clinic. "There's going to be people who need prescriptions and more."
Tray von Martin. Michael Brown. Eric Garner. The list of names of black men killed by white men who have subsequently gone unpunished -- and in the case of Brown and Garner, untried -- continues to grow. In each of these cases, an ugly theme has been raised in defense of the perpetrators: The victims should have known better.
ReplyDeleteWhy did Garner resist arrest? Why was Martin wearing a hoodie? Why did Brown not meekly get out of the street when ordered to by a police officer? The reasoning goes that their deaths were triggered by their deeds; they need to be held posthumously accountable for their conduct. When it comes to the actions of their white killers, however, the accountability hawks fall suddenly silent.
A flagrant new example of this "accountability for thee, but not for me" sensibility emerged last week, when New England Cable News reported that actor Mark Wahlberg -- one of Hollywood's most bankable leading men, who scored a staggering $16 million paycheck for his turn as a heroic father and inventor in the most recent "Transformers" movie -- has petitioned Massachusetts for pardon of his brutal assaults on a pair of Vietnamese men, Tranh Lam and Hoa Trinh, while a teenager in Dorchester, Massachusetts. The attacks were peppered with racial slurs; he called Lam a "Vietnam f*cking sh*t" before smashing him in the head with a large club and knocking him unconscious, and he punched Trinh so hard that he left him blinded in one eye. He repeatedly referred to both men as "slant-eyed gooks" while he was being arrested. Wahlberg, who was 17, was tried as an adult and served 45 days in jail for the crime. I think that what Mark Wahlberg did was a great thing and something that many people should respect him for because honestly not very many people would ask to pardon themselves for mistakes they made in the past.
A man was killed in New york the other day, choked out by a white police officer, things like this happen everyday, what makes this different; the fact is the big boast about this cause is that the officer was white and the man was black. They have turn this death into a race dilemma. The man was selling illegal cigarettes, and would not do what the police said and would not put his hands behind his bad. He was resisting arrest. On the flip side, a chokehold is not a permitted use of force allowed by the NYPD. In the video evidence of the incident show the man who died: selling illegal cigarettes to under cover cops, then when confronted and being told he was going to be arrested he resisted arrest, yes the forced used shouldn’t have been used, but he should have done what was asked of him. But as the video shows, he was choked to death, he said to his “choker” eleven times that he couldn’t breathe till he became unconscious.
ReplyDeleteI think that this is horrible. The man who was selling the illegal cigarettes should have done what the undercover cops told him to do. Also he shouldn't have resisted arrest, but he did what he did and the fact that the cops put him in a chokehold is absurd. I agree with you Josh when you said that forced use shouldn't have been used.
DeleteI think this is horrible even though this man was resisting arrest doesn’t mean he should be chocked. On the other hand I don’t think race should be all to blame we don’t know what threats this man could have thrown at the police officer but that doesn’t excuse him this officer should get away with this it isnt anything like Ferguson he should be arrested.Polic officers are getting really comfortable killing people and it isn’t safe
DeleteEating Carolina pepers
ReplyDeleteEd Currie holds the record for the hottest chili pepper. The workers who peel this pepper have to wear two pairs of gloves because the pepper burns through one pair in 15 minutes. Currie became fascinated with breeding peppers as a boy and a he got older he opened a stand to sell his salsas and chilies. It took him tweleve years but he finally made his pepper by breeding the La Soufriere pepper from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent and a Naga pepper from Pakistan and named it Smokin' Ed’s Carolina Reaper. The pepper comes in orange red and green. The official heat of the Reaper is 1.56. The human body reacts to this pepper as if it was burned by a match. I personally think this kind of pepper shouldn’t be allowed if you feel like your being burned by a match. The hottest pepper is top secret and Currie says its horrible it has a few seconds of flavor then the burning sets in and doesn’t let up. Currie sells his salsas and chilies chilli jellies and chocolates worldwide. A scientist said that the fumes and residue on his gloves were to hot for him.
Pakistan militants: Children's massacre was to avenge army strikes
ReplyDeleteA three-day national mourning was started Wednesday by Pakistan. “They started targeting a school that mostly admits soldiers’ children because the students aspired to follow in their fathers’ footsteps and target militants,” said the Taliban. Tuesday of the three-say mourning, the Terrorists ambuscaded the school along with explosives strapped to their bodies that were set off in an auditorium filled with students taking exams and spraying bullets rapidly. 145 people were killed. Of those, 132 were children. From a warning email that was sent, the terror group warned Muslims to avoid places with military ties, saying it attacked the school to avenge the deaths of children allegedly killed by soldiers in tribal areas. Children that were apart and could recall the incident were interviewed about this tragic experience and how the terrorists struck. It first started when about five people burst in through a back door and started firing. “A lot of the children are under the benches,” a Pakistan Taliban member said, according to Ahmed. “Kill them.” With most of the dead bodies lying on top of each other, others were found drenched in blood. This is the deadliest incident inside of Pakistan since October 2007, when 139 Pakistanis died and more than 250 others were wounded in an attack near a procession for exiled former Pakistani Prime minister Benazir Bhutto, according to the university of Maryland’s Global Terrorism Database
ReplyDelete“A firestorm of controversy surrounds comedian Bill Cosby after Multiple allegations have surfaced claiming that he sexually assaulted numerous women, with alleged incidents dating as far back as 1969.
The 77-year-old is known around the world for his role as the lovable father Heathcliff Huxtable on the long-running sitcom The Cosby Show, and for having a stand-up comedy career that spans five decades. However, beginning in 2004, various claims of sexual assault and date rape began being leveled against Cosby” -yahoo news (December 15 2014)
I honestly think this is pretty crazy. Why would it take so long for everything to be known? Why would these people wait so long to come out and say that Bill raped them. No one has heard much from the man since his glory days and now he is all over the news and everyone if following him. I do not think he will be able to be charged with these crimes because the victims waited so long to come out. I Feel like maybe these people just wanted the attention and the publicity. I feel maybe in the past he had one night stand with these people but he surely did not rape them.
Girls Charged in Slenderman Stabbing Deemed Competent
ReplyDeleteTwo girls were accused of stabbing a friend to impress the fictional Internet bogeyman Slenderman have been found competent to stand trial. Morgan Geyser (12) and Anissa Weier (12) have been charged with attempted murder after authorities say they stabbed their friend, who is also 12, 19 times in may. Apparently, the girls were fond of horror websites and believed they would be able to meet a meme known as Slenderman they had encountered on a website known as Creepypasta Wiki. They told the police that to climb into his realm, a user must kill someone. If this was in any way justifiable, I don’t know why they would choose to kill a friend. The girls had made several plans to kill the girl. First, they were going to kill her at Geyser’s house by stabbing her in the neck while sleeping. Then, they decided to kill her at a park bathroom because there would be a drain for “the blood to go down.” After arguing over whether they should or not, they decided to lure her into the woods where they stabbed her 19 times and left her to possibly die. There were obviously many flaws in these plans and would ensure imminent consequences. Overall, these girls are completely oblivious, ignorant and have to be quite idiotic to think that they could meet a mythical creature that supposedly ran an online horror website by killing someone.
First of all the parents are not mentioned once in this situation which is very strange considering these children are a little to young if they were to actually believe in these websites and if so the legal parent or guardian should have that under control like restricting websites or going over certain websites. Also, to have a website that is so vile to actually say you can meet me in my "mythical home" if you kill someone. Websites like that should be supervised and took under serious thought that if a young person were to see it they wouldnt think anything of it. Letting children into the woods alone is dangerous enough. The charges should be on the children but also the adults who are taken responcible in my oppinion because if you raise a child without any supervision scenarios like this would happen and there wouldnt be anything to do.
DeleteThe first college goalball team lets blind student-athletes compete
ReplyDeleteCollege football teams are intense and slightly bloody. This fall Cal became the first in the nation to establish a competitive goal ball game. Matt Grigorieff is a graduate who founded athletics for all educations. Silent is an important rule for them since they have to focus and hear what is happening it is often that the referee has to remind the spectators to be quiet. Adam is the only not blind person he said that is it very hard at first you get disoriented but you get the hang of it they have twine at the lines so you know where you are. I personally think that what Adams is doing must be hard because most people who are playing are blind and have learned how to move around with this disability. Even if you are blind you still have to discipline your self to work hard to get better. The best goal ball player can throw the ball at around 50 miles per hour, which is pretty incredible. This game has two halves of each twelve minutes, which can make it dizzying. Players have hip knee and elbow pads to protect them from diving and sliding.
A Tennessee couple pleaded not guilty Friday to murder and child abuse charges for allegedly intoxicating their 5-year-old daughter by having her devoure more than two liters of water and grape soda, causing her death. the Vaughns would go an disciplin Alexa(their daughter) by forcing her to drink 2.4 liters of fluid within two hours. She had discovered bruised on the inside and outside of the little girls body and intoxicated by the fluid that was all inserted inside of her. Parent should not do this to their children it is wrong and selfish. If you were to actually get to the point where you physically abuse your child no matter what kind of abuse it is put them up for adoption, there is no reason to kill a little girl just because she wasnt behaving. These parents deserve so much more punishement The parents had stated Alexa had peed in her pants and threw up several or more times before they brought her to the hospital about three hours later from passing out. They had tried to feed her oatmeal to calm her stomach but she soon enough passed out while eating. IOther family friends would drive her in the car and say she always played patty cake also stating that she was a "normal" and "healthy" child. These parents of young Alexa (age 5) are now charged with first degree murder.
