My current events posting is from an article I read this weekend in the Washington Post titled, “Teacher Spends Two Days as a Student and is Shocked at What She Learns.”
ReplyDeleteMany teachers, myself included, take the student day for granted. We assume that our classroom is the most important and that an attentive student is one that sits down quietly, does his/her work, and always asks questions. We often forget how tiring it might be to be sitting all day, and when a student acts out, we mistakenly blame it on “bad behavior;” however, if I was forced to remain passively learning all day, everyday, I would more than likely “act out,” too. I’m too active and ADD to remain in my seat, on task, and “good” for 7 hours a day. As a teacher, I’m interested in trying some of the author’s recommendations for classroom teaching:
• A mandatory stretch break in the middle of class
• A Nerf basketball hoop for the first minute and last minute of class
• An egg-timer to shut me up and get to student thoughts, problems, and questions (I love my own voice!)
• Start off class with students’ own questions
• A more lounge-type atmosphere
• A five minute “reading period” where all questions are answered before any writing/multiple choice is attempted
As a teacher that is researching as many “best teaching practices” that I can, I hope to amend my teaching style to allow each student to do his or her best in the school system. I have known for a long time that the system is broken, and I would like to do everything in my power to help “fix” it; however, there are barriers in my way:
• Legislation that the state, district, and (to an extent) my principals have to follow
o It’s made with the students’ best interest in mind, it really is, but often time, its implementation is marred with red tape, overly political agendas, and ill-equipped teachers.
• Society
o There is a tide of “anti-teachers” mentality ravaging the educational landscape—we’re blamed for a lot of things that are out of our control, but certainly affect student performance in the classroom.
• Parents
o The school system is radically different than when you were in school—heck, it’s radically different from when I was in school, and I only graduated nine years ago!
• Students
o No, you’re not entitled to anything. Please work for it and earn it—whatever it might be. The best things in life are worth going through hell for, and right now that hell might be school. Know that many teachers are actively trying to make schooling and education better for you.
• Myself
o It’s easy to be lazy and do what I’ve always done; it takes constantly reminding myself that it’s not about me, it’s about the student to continuously push myself forward as an educator and as a person.
I like the Nerf basketball idea haha. I appreciate how teachers are getting smarter and doing more to interact with their students and not just give them a lesson or worksheet. We're humans, not robots. I wish we could do something to get out of those chairs, because sitting in a chair for 6 hours everyday isn't necessarily healthy; maybe something like standing desks. A more lounge-like classrooms sounds like it could be beneficial by lowering stress levels and opening up the classroom. I'm looking forward to these changes in the classroom.
DeleteI think that these ideas are great. I also like the facts that teachers are doing everything they can to put themselves in students shoes. I think these ideas will make school a little more interesting and less boring.
DeleteI think these ideas could really important on how us as students learn. I feel that the nerf basketball idea is great. I feel if we could incorporate ideas given in this article into our class things would be great.
DeleteCNN// Voters Are Angry
ReplyDeleteDemocrats are battling to try and save the Senate majority, while hoping to prevent more losses in the House, which the GOP controls by a 234 to 201 margin. In the Senate, Republicans need a net gain of six seats, and several state polls in the past month of contested races show that Democrats are in danger of losing control of the majority, and thus Congress. Many democrats believe it is unfair that voting is not getting what they need for voting. I feel like this state is unfair because democrats and republicans are two different political groups and serving one differently is just like siding with someone against another. Nearly 7 in 10 Americans are angry at the direction the country is headed and 53% of Americans disapprove of President Barack Obama's job performance. Democrats are not getting the voting privileges they are provided with and this causes people to be angry because voting is in about a week and the democrats voting is still off balance.Obama has avoided the situation but I feel like he should make a statement about it because about 60% of people are angry with the way voting is going, and they believe the unfair act should be handled by the President.
I agree with you when you say that both sides should be treated the same no matter if the majority of the state is democratic or republican. I looked up this article on CNN and found that while the democrats are very angry about the way voting is going on and that they don’t have their “privileges”, the republicans are enthusiastic. The democrats want to save the majority of the Senate. The republicans, however, need only those 6 more seats. This means that the democrats could possibly loose that majority. Democrats apparently control the Senate by a 55- 45 margin. Since, according to the poll, the majority of Americans doesn’t approve of Obama’s job performance and don’t like the way the country is headed (I, personally, agree with this), the Democrats are in trouble for sure.
DeleteI feel that the Democratic side is unfairly treated and misunderstood. Both should be treated fairly and biased opinions shouldn't affect the voting system itself. Of course it needs to affect the outcome. But it's because from people disapproving with Obama's ways, making people think all Democrats are the same.
DeleteHuffington Post - U.S. To Recognize Same-Sex Marriage In 6 New States
ReplyDeleteThe federal government is recognizing gay marriage in six more states and extending federal benefits to those couples, Attorney General Eric Holder announced Saturday. Gay marriage recently became legal in Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, North Carolina, West Virginia and Wyoming. The government's announcement follows the U.S. Supreme Court's decision earlier this month to decline to hear appeals from five states that sought to keep their marriage bans in place. The total number of states that have federal recognition of same-sex marriage is at 32, even including the District of Columbia. Couples married in these states qualify for a various range of federal benefits, including Social Security and veterans' benefits. "With each new state where same-sex marriages are legally recognized, our nation moves closer to achieving full equality for all Americans," Holder said. The attorney general said the government is working "as quickly as possible" to make sure same-sex married couples in these states receive the "fullest array of benefits" that federal law allows. The Justice Department also has determined that it can legally recognize gay marriages performed this summer in Indiana and Wisconsin after federal courts declared marriage bans in the states unconstitutional. The developments caused a bit of confusion about the states of those unions, but the Attorney General said the U.S. government will recognize these marriages.
I think its a good thing that more states are actually recognizing gay marriage because these couples should have the opportunity to get married no matter what the government says. Its also a good thing that they are receiving federal benefits. America is finally getting closer to full equality of humans. More and more states should still continue to recognize same-sex marriage. It is important that America can do this for their citizens.
DeleteI believe that same sex marriage is definitely being more recognized and accepted throughout America for sure. I think it is great more states are legalizing gay marriage but don’t quite understand why some states like Alabama, Florida, and Georgia don’t approve of this. I understand it is a right for the state, but how about the rights for the individuals? I mean, as you said, the Supreme Court didn’t even want to hear the appeals for states that want to keep same sex marriage. I don’t think we should be shoving this idea of gay marriage down everyone’s throat, but everyone should know this is still a hate crime. According to DoSomething.org, 47 states have anti- hate crime laws, but only 24 states have sexual orientation in their legislation.
DeleteI think it's good that more states are recognizing gay marriage. This means we're one step closer to this not being a problem. Everyone should be equal, that's what our 14th amendment says, so not recognizing gay marriage is going against that amendment.
Delete@Micayla LaVaglio I think the main reason why Alabama, Georgia & Florida(Mostly) haven't accepted the fact of same sex marriage is because of religion and how manipulated it has gotten. Love is Love and it should have been legal a long time ago but, since religion has been manipulated and twisted around and religion has quite an impact on the population, they have began to believe that being gay is bad, they believed the lies. I fully support same sex marriage myself, I'm also agnostic (it has nothing to do with anything but, I'm just letting you be aware of my "religion"). I do believe in those states, the elderly community take up most of their populations and the elderly are usually religious freaks. Since they have believed what they believe for forever, they wouldn't change their minds very easily. Since being stubborn people, they aren't agreeing to it being passed. Which I find very unfair. There really isn't much that we can do but, hopefully something will change that and all of the U.S. will be equal.
Delete@Theresa Reynolds I completely agree with you. Reason why it should have been legal a long while back. Just with the 14th amendment, it should have just been made legal using that. I mean technically churches should be shut down since they have been ridiculing the gay community, making people go against them and going against the 14th amendment. This wouldn't have been a problem in the first place.
DeleteRegardless of the stand each citizen takes on this extremely controversial topic, the beauty in the structure of our government's division of power cannot be concealed. The separation of powers, such as the separation of powers between our central (or national) laws and our state laws. This allows for the migration of those people who agree/disagree with any laws (not exclusive to this same sex marriage legalization or ban). Freedom is most definitely enhanced through our governmental breakdown, pertaining to modern issues as well as historical issues.
DeleteI believe it is great that gay marriage is finally being recognized and, in the least, considered. The fact this has been illegal for so long is almost shameful and it is good the government and states are stepping up and growing out of their so-called 'homophobia' (which is merely ignorance with a fancy name). Although there may be down votes, I believe there will be many up votes as to whether a certain state will transition because people are becoming more and more accepting of gay marriage. I can only hope that we, as a country, will recognize that we have no reason to deny these people marriage to the one they love and will become more accepting and friendly towards them.
Delete@kiki Longhway I don't feel it's right to say that a place that is spiritual for a lot of people should be shut down. Church is a very important place for Christian fellowship and worship. The church is simply teaching Christians what is in the Bible, and it's not ok to take away something so sacred and valuable to someone's spirituality. Yes, the Bible and the church may preach against homosexuality, but they also teach not to judge other people, which include homosexuals, so a lot of the true Christians don't judge, while lots of fake Christians do judge. Not to be rude or anything, but if homosexuals don't want to hear about the religious disapproval of their ways, they are not forced to go to church. Also, if they decided to shut down the churches, that would cause a huge uproar due to the fact that a lot of Americans are Christians.
DeleteI personally find it pretty crazy how we re the only species on this planet that actually care about whom we love. Many animals preform same sex rituals such as: giraffes, ducks, dogs, elephants and even monkeys. Our closest relatives in the animal kingdom preform something that most humans frown upon. My personal feelings on this is, people liking/loving who they like/love is not affecting me in anyway possible. I’m happy that they are happy.
DeleteIt is pretty great that more people are recognizing the importance of the LGBTQ community and how everyone should be treated equally. Although it is great news, it is still upsetting that people of all sexual orientations can't get married and love who they want to love in about 20 states still. Hopefully in the future it will be legal in all 50 states and countries around the world.
DeleteI agree with Kendall and her views on the animal kingdom. Just as a man and a women can get married just about anywhere a male and another male or a female and another female should be able to live their lives without constantly being frowned up, but I guess the frowning starts in the bystanders childhood. The frown began when the child is told to like the opposite sex, marry the opposite sex, our religion doesn't like that, and so on. We are all humans and as humans everyone deserves to be respected and have fair and equal opportunities to live their lives without being frowned upon. People should stop wasting their time critiquing others and critique themselves once in a while maybe they'll notice the affects of their criticism.
DeleteI'm glad that couples, regardless of sexual orientation, are being given the right to be married. I also think it's extremely important to make something unequivocally clear: churches do not need to conform to same-sex marriage. If churches do not want to marry a couple because of religious tendencies, that's fine--they have no obligation to defy their rules and faith. The issue is only in the social, political, and legislative forum--religion cannot and should not dictate our local, state, or national laws. It's refreshing to see laws and mandates that are secular and take into consideration the personal beliefs of everyone, rather than one demographic.
DeleteIt's great seeing all the positive comments on this post, is seems like America is starting to understand all love is equal no matter who is loving who. It'd be amazing to see gay marriage become legal in 50 states, but for the more southern states such as Alabama and Florida, it's going to be a but more difficult to legalize. And in relation to church, the concept is very simple: if you don't like it - don't do it. Religion and government are supposed to be separate, so there is should be no issue to just legalize it in the entire country. If people argue it's against their religion, there are plenty of teachings in the bible not practiced today, so if gay marriage should be illegal because it's against religion, so should any clothing with more than one material, pregnant women who are not married should be stoned, and divorce should be banned too...Which in today's world sounds ridiculous.
DeleteI agree completely and am glad to see that it is being recognized finally for these people.
DeleteI am glad that the nation is starting to treat these people equally. This could bring the nation together and help to and the hostility. We as a nation need to accept each other for what they are.
DeleteI completely agree and i am happy that people are finding that gay marriage is completely normal and this should begin everyone together instead of separating us.
DeleteI agree with Natalee. We still have a long way to go, but this is a huge step and its really encouraging to see all this progress. Im glad that more and more states are accepting same sex marriage, even if it is crazy that we have to MAKE it legal in the first place.

ReplyDeleteAfter nearly a decade of being derided as dangerous to fly and an example of wasteful military spending, the radar-evading F-22 Raptor fighter jet flew in combat for the first time in this week’s U.S.-led airstrikes in Syria.
ReplyDeleteThe Pentagon said it used the stealthy warplane in coordinated strikes with other fighter jets and bombers against Islamic State (ISIL) strongholds and facilities in northern Syria. The F-22’s apparent success is a dramatic turnaround from three years ago, when the fighter was grounded for nearly five months because of safety problems stemming from a faulty oxygen supply system.
For a while, the plane’s future was very much in doubt.
Two decades ago, the Pentagon planned to buy 648 F-22s for $139 million apiece. But the cost ultimately soared to $412 million, the Government Accountability Office said, making it the most expensive fighter jet ever. Personally I believe that the F-22 should remain in operation due to it's advanced design and computer systems. Although the jet is extremely costly, I believe that the government should spare no expense in our national defense department.
What role was this warplane playing in combat was it an escort fighter jet, bomber, or something else? Is there a reason why the planes jumped from 139 million to 412 million? Why does the military will require so many of these F-22 raptors?
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteI agree with Brandon because when it comes to protecting our country they want to be stingy. But when it comes to something not as important they go all out. Our safety is important and they need to get the F-22's.
DeleteCNN- Surviving the “Murdered Child’s Club”
ReplyDeleteIn this article posted October 17, 2014, parents Dan and Gil Harrington became members of the “Murdered Child’s Club”. The Harrington’s membership began October 17, 2009 when their daughter Morgan Dana Harrington went missing attending a concert on the University of Virginia campus. Her remains were uncovered 101 days later, 10 miles from the concert area. It was ruled a homicide. Every year, her parents pay her phone bill to hear her voice on voice mail and are even still a couple. On Morgan’s death anniversary, they have a ceremony every year and try to generate new information of the murder and warn others. Five weeks ago, Hannah Graham, another young, UOV student has vanished. Patient’s technician at the UOV’s Medical Center was charged with abducting the girl. Officials now think that was the same man who murdered Morgan. Even though this is the most promising lead yet for the Harrington family, they have no real proof he even abducted Morgan. Also, their daughter is still dead and there is still another missing girl out there. It was tragic to go through the time when Morgan was missing, the family stated they much preferred knowing she was dead then not knowing at all. But through all this tragedy, her family is still coping. Instead of getting a divorce or being so out-of-touch with the real world, her parents are together and advocating catching the killer/ warning young girls in the UOV area of him. Even though the Harrington’s are apart of the “Murdered Child’s Club”, they are still connected to Morgan, which is more I can say about other families. You bear what is unbearable. Morgan’s family has worked the past couple of years to give their dead daughter’s life meaning. They want her death to mean they catch this killer.
This is very interesting because if I was in their shoes, I would not want to have anything to do with the killer or the murder information. Although, they are trying to make their daughters death mean something by warning all these girls and being a part of that club, so I guess they are making a difference to some young women. I don't really think that they should pin the murder on one specific guy because they don't even know for a fact that he killed their daughter. If it is the same guy and he is responsible for the other girl vanishing, then they need to find him quickly before something like this happens again.
DeleteI agree that this is very interesting, but not so much that I would do something different, but more so that I admire their strength in these hard times. This is truly what their daughter would have wanted them to do and I believe they are strong together and just as people in general. I know I would not be as strong as them if I was in their shoes, but I would hope to recover from the tragedy and do as they do. I also do not believe they should not pin the murder on the same person for, unless the murders are similar in nature, there is nothing to really go off of other than that both were young and found dead near where they were last seen which is common in many murder cases across the country. It's not out of the ordinary. I just hope they can find the murderer and bring them to justice for both murders, whether it be two murderers or one.
DeleteI think that the way the parents kept the memory of their daughter alive was wonderful. I hope that the families find out soon what really happened to their daughters. Joining the club was a step in the right direction for the parents.
DeleteI think it’s a sad story to read but its interesting because the parents did not go crazy after their daughters death. They simply stayed together and are warning others of the criminal on the run. I think its very sad how the parents still pay the phone bill for their daughter just to hear her voice on the voice mail. The daughter may be gone but the parents will never forget her and are helping to warn others about this killer.
DeleteThis family is very brave and courageous. I think that there should be more awareness for these kinds of things. This is very tragic and I feel sympathy for these families.
DeleteThis family has an amazing amount of strength to be able to come out of this situation with such determination to help solve this case. They seem to be devoted to it at that. Their commitment to staying together through this hard time is admirable. They are truly strong people.

ReplyDeleteA very famous named “Gucci Mane” has been in prison for a long and has been there before. His judge recently has not released him from prison but has taken a year off his sentence for time already spent. Gucci Mane went to jail in the first place because of gun possession and has been to prison many times. Gucci Mane somehow still drops mix tapes in prison keeping him relevant. Gucci was given a 39-month sentence. It began in August 2014. The judge taking care of Gucci's case is now saying his prison time begins at the time of his arrest, taking a year off his original sentence. BET reported that his official release date would be December 2016, early Christmas present. MTV news reports that the rapper is facing two charges of gun possession. If convicted on both charges, he potentially faces a 20-year prison sentence in addition to a $500, 000 fine. Gucci’s lawyer, Drew Findling, has revealed that the next court date is scheduled for early January. Until then, he remains in the DeKalb County Jail, where he’s been held since his September arrest. Since is arrest his fans have demanded his release but it obviously wont happen unless found innocent. #FreeGucci
ReplyDeleteThey need to do something about this because I don't think that it is right for Gucci. I also think that a 39-month sentence is a bit too much, they should of already fixed this problem but apparently they haven't. I don’t know whether he is innocent or not so I can not say much about this. I am just know hoping for the best and I hope to see the best for this man.
DeleteHe is a famous male rapper ,why can he not just get the guns he had registered? I feel like its stupid for him to go to jail on the same charges twice. He should have fixed the problem in the first place. There is no reason why he could not go to a proper gun store and do the proper work needed in order to stay out of trouble.
DeleteThe United States is working with low-income students so that they can get a better education in college and go onto receiving a bachelor’s degree. Many of these low-income students and middle class students fall through the cracks with getting a shot at college. I think that if you are a good student, then you should be able to have the chance at going to college regardless of how much money you have. Only about one in three top-performing students from the bottom half of the income distribution attend college with a high six-year graduation rate. Many schools are now allowing every high school junior to take the SAT. College Board is responsible for administering the test to students and even they are trying to make college more accessible for students. We have so many talented young people enrolled in high school and some of them won’t even get the chance to enhance their skills and make them more useful. The Bloomberg coalition is setting specific goals that will allow more students of low-income to attend college for more than six years. The problem is that there will be more students of less income applying to colleges that don’t have the money for tuition revenue.
ReplyDeleteI think this subject is great because, these lower class citizens are forced to go to F average schools because that’s all their cities have, and when schools have low grade averages that means they aren't getting the best education possible. With things like this out there, poor children can finally achieve their dreams of becoming doctors or lawyers. Especially of their families cant afford decent colleges for their children to attend, especially if these students have 4.0 GPA’s or better, your right Kylie, students should get a shot at college no matter how much money their families have.
DeleteUnfortunately, education is definitely not equitable. The lowest performing schools are, by and large, the lowest funded schools, and the highest performing schools have the most funding. It's nice that there's a program like this to alleviate the inequity, but really, it's a bandaid for a grievous wound. Like most things in this country, fixing will take a massive overhaul of the current system, and until that happens too many students will fall through the cracks, although, we'll have programs like this that are great, but ultimately are us patting ourselves on the back for helping out disadvantaged students.
DeleteOn Friday Jaylen Fryberg shot some people in his school. He was also crowned homecoming prince just the week before. He killed one of the students before killing himself. When he was crowned prince people in the crowd applauded him with yells of admiration. Nate Heckendorf says, “A lot of people had good hopes for him and thought the best of him.” People say he was very nice and ambitious. Three months ago on his birthday he received a gun and posted a picture of it on Instagram. But, schoolmates say before the shooting all wasn’t well with him. He got into a fight with someone who said something racist to him. In recent months he had also just been through a break up. But on Friday the day of the shooting people who spoke with him said he looked content with life. I think this shows that anybody can start a school shooting; not only people who are depressed or people who have mental disabilities.
ReplyDeleteThis article is very touching; I now see that anything can happen with anyone. This will show kids around the world that you shouldn't cause problems with other people because anything can happen. I also find it very scary that someone would do that. I don’t understand how someone could get filled up with that much anger and hate to do something like that. I send prayers to him and his family and hope for the best for them.
DeleteI think that this is terrible, but us teenagers and people can learn from this. Just because someone seems happy and isn't depressed doesn't mean they aren't capable of doing something as horrifying as this. Bad days can lead to bad decisions.
DeleteThat just shows you can't judge a person by how they look, or by even how they act for a short-term amount of time. It's unfortunate what he did and I hope they find out what made him do that. People can always hide their emotions, but are really falling apart inside. He shouldn't have received a gun in the first place if he is still in school.
DeleteWhat a horrific event that is completely at odds with the current stigma that anyone who reacts in a fit of rage is "mentally insane" or "psycho". Personally, it would be interesting to follow up on the psychological reasoning for this student to react this way, in comparison to other shooters entering school grounds. Due to the, in my opinion, outrageous number of public shooters, I feel that there should be more psychological help available to the general population. This may allow students and other individuals to confide in a therapist, or persons with experience in dealing with those in emotional crisis. Everyone needs therapy, we all have weaknesses and rage-fits, minimizing the impact one person's actions on society needs to be the priority.
DeleteTruly it is a horrific event, but as Theresa has, I believe this can show not all shootings are caused by mentally disabled people. However, also in those who claim it is defenses, was it stated Jaylen was not depressed specifically or has he shown no signs of it? As a personal sufferer of depression, the illness is a sneaky one. It is quiet and while Jaylen may have been acting normal, he could have easily been hurting on the inside. I know I have done so. I'm not saying this to justify the slaughter of his classmates, for there is no justification, I'm merely looking at it from a standpoint I've gained with the information provided. He is guilty in all regards, mental illness or not, but I can only hope that those he injured or killed, the families will recover. I'm sure they are in everyone's prayers and I wish them the best of luck.
DeleteYes, I don't think it happens only because of mentally disabled people, but ones who have control of themselves as well. That's why the Safe Act probably will not do much to help America.
DeleteI agree this article proves that anything can happen. Even thought he person may seem happy you never know what people are really going through.
DeleteI think this is a very horrific story to read because he killed another students while he was depressed with life. They state that he had been in a fight and went through a breakup in the last week, both of these things can contribute to depressed children and wild thoughts. I think this article proves the most that anything can happen on any given day, and that we should enjoy our lives and treat others well.
DeleteThis article proves that just about anything can happen. It also takes the phrase "you can't judge a book by it cover" to a higher level. He looked fine, but underneath he was suffering.
DeleteI think it's really unfortunate that this happened, it seemed like he had a lot going for him. This just shows that even if someone seems to be fine and happy it could end up being the exact opposite.
DeleteNurse Amber Vinson Ebola-free, discharged from hospital
ReplyDeleteThe nurse, Amber Vinson, was diagnosed with Ebola about two weeks ago. Dressed in a gray suit, Vinson stood at a podium and briefly spoke at a news conference. She said she was "grateful to be well" and thanked God for giving her the hope and strength to fight the disease. This is crazy; I would like to know how this could possibly happen. I hope that from this article and from this situation that we get more knowledge. If somehow we got a cure for this than it would change the world. There might be a chance that she never even had Ebola or there is a chance that the disease wasn’t fully grown on her body. Ebola has killed more than 4,900 people, it was mostly in the West African nations of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, and infected thousands more in what health officials call the worst outbreak of the disease in history. Apparently they say that her immune system was too strong for the disease, and she was very lucky. I hope that doctors keep learning about this disease and somehow one day they can find a cure for it. Lots of people recently are getting Ebola and we need to find a way to fix this.
I am glad that she is Ebola free, but I feel that the way people have been reacting to the quarantine time, and the amount of selfishness, and absent minded people are. People are to worried about living till death then the saving of more lives, the effects that could be cause by that “living”. I feel that people should understand that in a matter of two coughs that the virus could be a epidemic.
DeleteThis is getting scientists a step closer to cure this virus. The sooner we have an actual cure the less worried people would be. Then again, media has hyped up this disease more than it should have. Why? Well it always comes down to money. Instead of focusing on who's infected and making a huge deal out of it, the media can focus on the path to find a cure.
DeleteApple iMac with Retina 5K display
ReplyDeletehttp://www.theverge.com/2014/10/27/7068363/apple-imac-with-retina-5k-display-review
Apple has recently unveiled its new iMac, setting a new standard for desktops. Unlike Apple's earlier desktops, the new iMac boasts a new Retina 5k display. The specs have been upgraded and the screen is larger, but the computer is just about the same width of earlier models. The price might scare some people away, starting at $2,499. It's designed for photographers, videographers, or maybe just the daily consumer if you have $2500 dollars to regurgitate. The display measures 5,120 pixels wide by 2,880 pixels tall coming out to a total 14.7 million pixels; seven times as many pixels on a 1080p TV. The computer itself is great, but there is not much content out for it to shine with. Many services are still lacking 4k compatibility such as Netflix and games, but youtube does have 4k. I think it's totally worth it to invest in this computer, seeing that its life span could be longer than a regular computer; maybe around 10 years. Technology keeps getting better and better, and the bar gets raised higher and higher every year. Companies like apple set them. Hopefully other competitors can keep up.
CNN Tech News - New app helps flag suicidal tweets.
ReplyDeleteA new app called Samaritans Radar is designed to detected any tweets that have suicidal messages in them. This app was created by the suicide prevention society, Samaritans, to alert friends and family of the potential suicide notation on social media. Every 40 seconds, someone in the world takes their own life, a global tally of more than 800,000 suicides a year, according to a United Nations report released last month. Honestly, I think the creators of the app have good intentions, and want to save more life, but I have mixed feelings about the whole situation. I don;t think an app is needed to tell if someone is suicidal or not. Social media is almost like a place to escape for some people, and maybe having a bad day and just tweeting about isn't the same thing as "wanting to commit suicide." I mean if I'm having a bad day and I say I hate something, I don't want my friends coming up to me and telling adults I'm suicidal. I mean in some cases if someones tweeting "help me," "tired of being alone," or "hate myself" maybe a red flag should come up and you should talk to that person to make sure their ok. It bothers me a little that they made an app for this kind of situation, needless to say they have an app for everything, but now they have one to tell you if someone is suicidal, honestly, unless your blind, I think if someone tweets something like that, you'll be able to tell.
"Samaritans Radar is in its infancy and won't get it right every time," the organization said in a statement Wednesday. "It's not good at sarcasm or jokes yet! But there's a way for you to give feedback on whether a Samaritans Radar alert was correct, so the service improves for everyone."
I think that the Samaritans Radar sounds like a good app because it will help point out potential suicide notation, which could help decrease the number of potential suicides but on the other hand I agree with you; that an app isn't needed to tell if someone os suicidal or not. I think that it might cause a bit more trouble than it will help because some people like me might tweet from time to tim about how bad their day was, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I want to end my life.
DeleteThe Samaritans Radar app reeks of parental attempt to understand a younger generation, and while this is a well intentioned attempt, this will not manifest a movement to prevent suicide. The issue is, as paradigmatic, ignorance of social media and reasons behind suicide among teens and young adults. While its effortless to log onto Twitter and have a completely negative outlook on life, depression is not a virus(and is much more severe than a bad mood), it cannot be "caught" through Twitter and it cannot be "vaccinated". Unfortunately, suicidal tendencies aren't those that can just be rid of by a notification on your mother's phone.
DeleteI agree with you that this app was created with good intentions, but I don't think it will work. You should be able to read a tweet yourself and know if someone is suicidal or not. We don't need an app for that. I think this will also cause more harm because the app doesn't detect sarcasm and could send a notification when the teen wasn't actually suicidal.

ReplyDeleteCNN News: Cops link woman's beheading, son's death as possible murder-suicide
ReplyDeleteA woman was found beheaded outside her apartment on Long Island, New York, Tuesday night, and shortly afterward her son died in an apparent suicide when he stepped in front of a commuter train, a law enforcement source told CNN. The incidents are being investigated as a possible murder-suicide. The woman was in her 60s; the son in his 30s. Authorities have not yet recovered a murder weapon. The woman was found dead on the pavement outside an apartment building, CNN affiliate WCBS reported. She had been decapitated. "I literally thought it was a prank," one resident said, according to WCBS. "We saw the body on one side and saw the head on the other side. I thought everything was a prank." Less than a half hour after the body was found, a man in his 30s was struck by a Long Island Rail Road train from Penn Station in Manhattan, WCBS reported. "It's insane," a Farmingdale resident said, according to WCBS. "You never think something like that's going to happen right outside your doorstep." The names of the man and woman have not been released, Nassau County police said. The investigation is ongoing
That is quite peculiar in my opinion. The process of beheading someone would take 'x' pounds of force or would consists of multiple blows to the neck with an object capable of beheading a human. An object such as a machete would have to be swung at their neck multiple times before their head detaches from their body but an object such as a katana swung at the right angle could swipe their head off in one shot. Those are just some of my theories or the person could've been beheaded at another location and their body was transported to the house. According to an article published in the New York times a suicide is not as newsworthy as a homicide. The article states that the anatomy of a murder-suicide is as follows: the wish to kill, the wish to be killed and the wish to die. While the murder suicide story would be great for the media and that is what they are currently advertising what-if the man that was struck by the train committed suicide upon finding out that his mother was killed. To conclude, I think the media and publicist will attempt to excite its viewers will twist this event.
Delete3 Girls Skipped School To Join ISIS
ReplyDeleteThree girls, two fifteen, one seventeen, had been reported by officials that they had ultimately tried to join ISIS. Two of the girls, who were sisters, stole $2000 from their own parents, and left without a word. The two had told their dad that they were going to go to the library before the other girl's dad called him to ask if his children's passports were missing, and they were. The girls announced that they had conducted a plan months before going to Syria. They had found it online and left to Germany as soon as possible, where they would catch a flight to Turkey. Personally, I didn't believe it. I honestly thought that the media was just exaggerating, as usual, and had just mixed facts up. Once I found out it was real, I continued to read the statistical part of the article. Apparently, ISIS is very good at persuading Western people to join. About 5 people per week join it from Britain. That's around 260 a year! Not to mention all of the thousands of other people joining it everyday as well. It's quite a scary thought, especially with all of the threats they have been making. I just hope this situation ends pretty soon.
Unfortunately, this is what the world has come to! More and more people see Islamic Extremism as a way to play Army and they don't see what it actually is, terrorism. ISIS is an organization that this administration has a hard time dealing with. These three girls should be ashamed of themselves and should be charged with treason, conspiracy, and terrorism.
DeleteA NASA rocket exploded in midair on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in huge flames and loud booms along the Virginia coast. Thankfully, this explosion had no injuries or deaths. This spacecraft had been set to launch at 6:22 p.m. along the Atlantic Ocean, carrying around 5,000 pounds of supplies and experiments to the International Space Station. Out of the blue, it exploded about six seconds after launch. However, it did not explode on its own. After around 10 seconds of being launched, they noticed that there was something wrong with the rocket, causing the self-destruct button to be pushed. What was left of the spacecraft and rocket fell back to Earth, causing even more flames upon impact. This spacecraft together caused more then $200 million. That is a lot of money lost, as well as science lost.
ReplyDeleteWas there in more thorough explanation into why explosion happened or do they even know exactly why it happened? Did any of the debris actually land in Virginia or any other State. Where any of these supplies vital to the health of the astronauts on the international space station? I have more questions but thank you for passing on the news.
DeleteI hope NASA can figure out what went wrong and fix it. The International Space Station needs those supplies and this event is a pretty big set back.
DeleteTeen used as bait in rape case: 'I was set up' // CNN
ReplyDeletehttp://www.cnn.com/2014/10/28/us/alabama-school-rape-lawsuit/index.html?hpt=hp_t4
Jaden, as she is called in the article, has recently come out about how when she was 14 she was used as bait to catch another student accused of sexual activity and rape in the action. According to Jaden, she was approached by the 16 year old boy and he told her to meet him in a bathroom to engage in sexual activities. Usually she ignored him, but when she told a friend the friend suggested she tell administration. Upon doing so the principle, Ronnie Blair, told her that they could not prove he was engaging in these activities without evidence and they could use Jaden as bait. Jaden did not agree at first, but eventually said yes since she wanted to bring him to justice. However, according to the vice principle he said that she was not in the bathroom she said they were going to. According to Jaden the boy made a last minute change and went to another bathroom where she resisted him to try and stall till, hopefully, a teacher would come in but she overpowered her and raped her. The boy accused was never charged but was suspended for five days and sent to an alternative school. The act with Jaden was allegedly the boys 13th attack.
It is sickening to hear that a school would put one of their students in danger of any physical abuse, never mind rape. On top of the fact that the rapist went through with the original plan and the girl was raped at the fault of the boy and the school. The worst part is that the boy wasn't even charged with rape! They caught him in the act and still wasn't charged? This infuriates me how it shows how terrible our justice system is in the US.
DeleteIn Farmingdale, NY (Long Island), a woman in 60s was beheaded by a man who entered her apartment. The man was in his 30s and upon beheading the woman, he dragged her body and head into the street. Neighbors and bystanders thought it was a "macabre Halloween prank," later to find out this was no prank. The killer kicked the victims head approximately 20 feet before jumping in front of a train killing himself. Is this another possible ISIS Lone Wolf Attack??? Unfortunately, people’s intuition on this night was saying that it was a simple Halloween prank. This is why the NYPD and other police agencies need to tighten up. Unfortunately, this instance resulted in the death of an innocent person and the suicide of a murderous suspect.
ReplyDeleteHonestly I find this news to be frightening. I have family that lives there, and if it is a murder or an attack by a terrorist group it would be terrible for all of the people in that area. The police need to raise awareness on halloween safety and tighten security in that area. The residents of that area need to be careful so that if something like this happens again, people will take it more seriously and as the death of a person and not some prank.
DeleteThis should be a red flag to everyone, and this should really scare the crap out of people. To think "as a halloween prank," some guy is walking around with an old women's head, doesn't really make me feel safe. In some ways, the resident's and neighbors of the area couldn't suspect something was weird? If I saw someone walking around my street with a body and a head the day before halloween, I think I would immediately freak out. But on another note, this could or could not be ISIS, with all the madness going on in the world, who can tell anymore?
DeleteThis article is sad because, this world has become a bad place, seeing a person’s dismembered head being carried and then punted 20 feet, and innocent bystanders immediately assume that this is a prank. Not to mention this psychopath then jumps in front of a train. I think New York should have more police officers patrolling the streets, or have more neighborhood watch officers in the suburbs, because homicides like this shouldn’t happen especially a few weeks before a holiday where children roam the streets for candy. To me that terrifying because of this murder happened a week or so later, children could’ve witnessed this murder.
DeleteThis is honestly a little scary this is them saying that they can come her and kill whoever they want. People thinking this is just a joke coasted us the life of someone we could use ot get some answers and I agree with you NYPD does need to straighten up because I think there could be more if this to come. ISIS does not respect this country and the people inside it and that’s what makes them so scary they are attacking and will be attacking us for years and if America doesn’t pay closer attention we might be looking at another 911.
DeleteThis guy is crazy! how can you kick a persons head after decapitating the person. I don't know how you could live with your self, and obviously he quickly decided he couldn't. Killing someone and then committing suicide is the fairest thing you could do, especially killing a women.
DeleteThis is crazy, how could you convince yourself so fast that is was a halloween prank. You should assume the worst and hope for the best. And, your right the police do need to tighten up.
DeleteCNN: Lamarr Houston out for season with torn ACL after injury during celebration
ReplyDeleteFor the second time in the 2014 NFL season, a defensive player’s year has ended due to a botched celebration. The Chicago Bears Lamarr Houston has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2014 season after an MRI Monday morning confirmed a torn ACL. Houston, was injured while attempting to celebrate after sacking the New England quarterback Jimmy Garropolo in the fourth quarter of the game. Houston leaped in the air, landed awkwardly on his right and went straight to the turf. They thought he would be fine after a teammate picked him up, but Houston soon realized that he couldn’t put any weight on his right leg and was carted off of the field. Houston finishes his first season with the Bears with a disappointing 11 tackles and 1 sack. Brought over on a $35 million dollar contract from the Oakland Raiders, Houston and veteran Jared Allen were expected to revitalize Chicago’s dormant pass rush. Instead both of them have struggled immensely in their new environments, with the 32 year old Allen looking every bit his age and Houston’s lone sack resulting in a season ending injury.

ReplyDeleteTeams investigate failure of unmanned rocket off Virginia coast http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/29/us/rocket-explodes-off-virginia/index.html)
ReplyDeleteOn Tuesday night at 6:22, a rocket was launched with it's destination being the International Space Station. But due to complications, the rocket exploded about 6 seconds into launch, producing flames reaching over 100 yards around the launch pad in the marshy swamp area on the Virginia Coast. NASA has made an announcement for the public to not touch any debris that may be found in the areas surrounding the explosion, because it is dangerous. Instead of touching or moving the scrap they should call NASA. The cargo lost in the explosion included supplies for the crew, hardware for the ISS, and some student experiments meant to be completed at the station. Although the crew on the space station still has plenty of supplies to survive for at least four more months, I feel like this is a set back for NASA. Even though they say it wasn't a catastrophic disaster it was still millions of dollars that they lost in that malfunction and they also lost a lot of hardware and experiments that were relatively important. No one was hurt or injured in the explosion, but the debris that fell in the ocean have yet to be determined whether they damaged the ecosystem. I can only hope that they can clean up the mess as soon as possible and get the experiments back on track.
“For years, private researchers have looked for clues to the mystery of pioneer aviator Amelia Earhart's disappearance over the Pacific in 1937. Now, one piece of fuselage metal may confirm her last location. The hunt for Amelia Earhart’s last whereabouts has consumed researchers, authors, filmmakers, and the public's imagination ever since the pioneer aviator vanished over the Pacific Ocean in 1937 while attempting to circumnavigate the globe.”
ReplyDeleteYahoo new
I find this pretty incredible that we might have found Amelia’s airplane it is very inspiring to never give up. AS a woman, Amelia’s story gives me great courage to never give up and that just because you’re a girl doesn’t mean you can’t do something that you love. Women have goals and dreams too, which, at that time women where not very important to men on a scale of doing great things. I truly hope they are able to find her plane. Her body thought, I feel is in the bottom of the ocean. Researchers say they found a bones that resembles her appearance, a white woman that has a similar height. Hopefully we will be able to find both, her remains and the airplane she used, in due time.
I think its cool too. Most people that disappear have no track of where they were last and people try and figure out what happened for a couple months then decide to give up. If researchers start the investigation again they can learn more about her last whereabouts and such. Always if one male goes missing they make a bigger deal out of it then if a female goes missing. it's just how society was back then.

ReplyDeletehttp://www.foxnews.com/science/2014/10/21/is-this-face-tutankhamun/
ReplyDeleteOn October 21,2014 with the help of modern technology, scientist were able to fully reconstruct King Tutankhamen body. In doing this, we can discover new information about the time in which Tutankhamen lived in.
Reconstructing his body allowed us to discover that he suffered from a genetic bone wasting disease, he also had a clubfoot these physical ailments would prevent him from being able to walk without assistance. Therefore it overruled the previous theory where he died in a chariot race, with hid ailment, it would be physically impossible for him to control a chariot successfully. The technology also revealed that Tutankhamen had sever malaria and he led a very unhealthy life. Also, the reconstruction also showed that his parents were most likely brother and sister, which lessened the gene pool allowing issues to develop during his life.
With these advances in technologies, King Tutankhamen could be just the beginning of our understanding of previous civilizations and how they truly lived, we could examine countless more fallen kings and queen and learn from these bodies the suffering and lifestyle the people dealt with for all of their lives.
I think it's amazing that forensic anthropologists, pathologists, and with today's technology, can go back thousands of years and do a virtual autopsy to see his cause of death and medical history. Imagine this advancement to the genealogical world! Websites like ancestry.com may be able to release ancestor's medical records for you to see and know more of your family's medical history.
DeletePalm Coast Observer Reports a Suspected Road Rage Shooting:
ReplyDeleteIn the average car, on the Interstate, parents or student rivers are raging about the slow car they just passed, or if another car drives in close proximity to their car. Road rage is typically verbal followed by an action of some sort, and in this case the victim, a woman was shot in her right arm while driving on I-95. Fortunately, the injury is endurable, and is not a threat to this 24-year-old woman. The Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating to identify the shooter and is asking for anyone with information to contact the Flagler County Sheriff’s Department.
This is concerning to say the least! Combined with all the other shooting incidents that have occurred among our own country, society seems to accept random shootings as ordinary everyday life. School shootings such as the horrific event on March 6, 2012 in Jacksonville, Florida; concerning a High School Spanish teacher that had recently been fired, returned to the reception area and pulled an AK-47 assault rifle out of a guitar case and fired the rifle at the head of the school and turned the weapon on himself, ending both of their lives. Road Rage Shooting is an issue that is further extending the spectrum of assault in an attempt to resolve one side of the conflict. Conflicts will hopefully, cease to result in horrific vexations come to an end and are no longer attributed to the habitual daily routine in the near future. Society as a whole contains the means to amend this outward form of indignation. However, its imperative to remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day.
How Can Tiny Norway Afford to Buy So Many Teslas? A New Freakonomics Radio Podcast
ReplyDeleteIn the 1960s, oil was found right of the shores of Norway. The oil Industry took over the metal mill worker, fishermen, and dam operators shifted to the oil drills. This new resource wealth has caused “Dutch Disease” or “The Natural-Resource Curse” to strike three times so far. The definition of the natural resource curse is when A newly found resource causes the workforce and economy to shift towards that resource but, something in the world causes that resource to lose value ruining that economy. From these previous mistakes the Liberal Democracy Government of Norway has decided to invest this natural resource wealth on a sovereign wealth fund and making Norway the greenest nation in the world. Like making incentives for buying a Tesla and other electric cars: driving in bus lanes, except to sales tax laws, administration fees waved, free public parking, etc. To put it simply to having a Tesla is cheaper then owning a gasoline powered car of similar value. This is all happening because Norway is the largest oil exporter in Europe and the third-biggest natural gas exporter in Europe too.

Newsela- Showing U.S. teens the dangers distract driving
ReplyDeleteIn this article, Wayne Irvin's daughter is fifteen and is ready to get her learners permit. Irvin is very worried about his daughter learning to drive. So he decides to starts an app with four other people called " Text Kills". This app gives information about the dangers of texting while driving. The article states that more than 7,000 teens are killed each year from texting driving. Texting while driving now kills more teens than drinking and driving. Text Kills raised money for film to show teens the importance of being responsible while driving. They set up a simulator that has a 50 inch TV screen. They drive the car just like you do in a video game. They are told to pick up a card that looks like a cellphone and they must read it out loud. This shows that their eyes are not on the road, and this shows students what it is like to drive while being distracted. Everyone watches then crash, hit walls, and spin around. This also shows how dangerous this is. I think that this program is very helpful to beginners. It shows them that texting while driving is dangerous and can kill you. I find it sad that people's lives are taken a way just by one text.
I think that this is a good way for people to understand how hard it is to text and drive. Many people often don’t think about how hard it to text and drive until they do it and it’s to late. I look around at people driving and there is always a few people who are texting. Many people say as they are learning “oh I’m not going to text and drive” and oh “I’m not going to speed” but they always do no matter how hard America tries texting and driving will always happen but the more they spread the word the more people with realize how unsafe it and what this father did is great he wanted to make his daughter realize how hard it is and he helped many others realize also.
DeleteThis is a great thing because texting and driving is no joke, people need to take it more serious. Many people are killed from texting and driving, although teens always say "I'd never text and drive" or "who could be so careless" when they are the ones who end up doing it. This app was a smart decision for Wayne Irvin to do.
DeleteThere can never be too much awareness when it comes to the danger of texting and driving. Just one mistake can end your life along with others. The simulator seems like a great idea to have new drivers experience, to try and get them to drive correctly and safely. Like Bella said, many people say they won't text and drive and they know they shouldn't but do it anyway. My sister is a perfect example of this, when she drives me to school/other places she often texts and drives and it makes me really uncomfortable. When I bring it up she tells me she knows what she's doing but I just end up taking her phone from her until we arrive at the destination. The sooner you teach new drivers the dangers of texting and driving and engraving the idea in their minds, the safer our roads will be.
DeleteSo a bear wanders into a drugstore... There will not be a punch line simply because this is not a joke. A black bear cub was discovered perusing the aisles of a drugstore in Ashland, Oregon and was picked up by the police in a shopping basket. The bear did not seem to want to start any problems with its fellow customers and did not fear them either. The bear has been transported to the Oregon department of Fish and Wildlife center and then moved to the PAWS Wildlife Center. The staff there plans on treating the bear by using a hands-off method where they do not touch the bear as if the bear was still living in the wild. The bear weighed in at 13-pounds and although the bear is small it is still capable of doing a lot of damage. While I find this article very amusing because the bear was probably looking for some porridge to replace the one Goldie Locks had already consumed, but on a serious note I believe the hand-off method will not induce the fear of humans into the bear, but actually encourage it. If a human is giving a bear food it will teach the bear that this food will come from humans without any work required. If someone were to give me food without me having to do anything I would label that person as 'The Real MVP'.
ReplyDeleteInnocent mental illness patient murdered by cop in own house - On October 28th, Kaldrick Donald's mother called local police in Gretna, Fl, to get help with her son who refused to take his medication for his mental illness. Juanita expected the officer, Charles Brown, to take Kaldrick to the Apalachee Center like before because a similar incident has happened before, but instead shot him inside their own home. Apparently when Brown arrived at the house he immediately grabbed and tased him, then dragged him to the bathroom where he shot him three times and his mother could hear him crying, "I want my mama" before the final shot. Brown then immediately left and told Juanita he "didn't want to be bothered," and when she confronted him about killing her son he replied with that "He had to." Kaldrick had no weapons on him at the time and there was no reason for the officer to do what he did. He is currently on paid leave and there have been no charges against him. It outrageous that an officer whose purpose is to protect the people and keep the peace can get away with something as cruel as this without any consequences. Recently, there have been many reports of cops killing innocent people without them getting charged or fired. It scares me that police are to get away with murder and continue with their jobs like nothing happened just because they're police.I'm glad that people are starting to realize the problem thats been going around and protests are happening. Donald's family and friends, along with the people of Gretna, have been protesting against Brown and trying to bring justice to Kaldrick.
ReplyDeleteThis is just sad, I find it disgusting he can kill someone with no weapons to protect himself and at the same time he is mentally disabled. The cop should be fired and charges should be pressed against him. Also the kid was in his own house and had no weapons so their is no way the cop "had to" kill him.
Deletethis really sickens me how someone can be so brutal to mental ill patient or just anyone, while they also have no weapon. I'm happy the protests have began because this is not right. He did not have to kill Kaldrick but he did. Cops like this give the good cops out there the bad name.
DeleteSimple questions lead a 13 year old to start his own business
ReplyDeleteLas December Shubham Banerjee asked his parent how blind people read his father told him to Google it so he did. To his surprise the printers for braille (the raised dots that help blind people read) coasted thousand of dollars. Shubham is now the founder of a business that makes braille his business is called Braigo labs. On Tuesday one of the largest computer chip makers announced that he will be investing in shubham’s company making him the youngest person to get venture capital funding. This investment also earns Shubham’s spot in history. This company can give them a better way to for them to read literature and news. Braille printers go for about two thousand dollars all the way up to ten thousand braigo plans to sell their printers for about $350. I think that what Shubham is doing is really cool because what he is doing is not because he has a blond family member he actually want to make it easier to every blind person to read. He is significantly lowering the price of braille printers by hundreds of dollars. Shubmans hard work not only changes his life but many others many blind people will get a better chance to read and learn.
I think this is a plus plus for everyone. Its improving in technology and with a low price. Its also cool how he's making an investment in the company and is also the youngest person to venture int he funding capital. This is also one of the very few things that benefit the blind people in the world. By this it lowers the price of this high end partner. This is also good publicity for him and the company of the printers.
DeleteRobert O' Neill claims to have fired the shots that killed Osama bin Laden in 2011. This was one of the biggest times for our country because we could finally feel at ease and that we had justice to the guy that killed thousands of people in the terrorist attack on 9/11. The navy seal himself publicly came out and announced that he was the one who killed Bin laden. He had an interview on the "Today Show" and said that he was ready for everyone to know that, which can mean people thanking him or others wanting to harm him. He says that he is ready for it all. The interviewer asked if he fears for his life now that it has came out and his response serenely was "i've been prepared all my life to handle stuff like this, so whatever is coming my way, i'm more than ready for it." He states originally he was assigned to be a supervisor outside the building bin laden was in but volunteered to go inside the building hoping to get a shot at the terrorist himself. He claims to have shot bin laden int he face at least three times. My opinion on this is that i respect he threatened his life to take one more terrorist out of the world, but it wasn't the best idea to go publicly out and let people know he was the one who killed him. It can threaten his own life, his family and friends, and the United States as a country.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. By going out publicly he imposes a threat on the people he loves and on our country. There will always be terrorism in the world, but by stating publicly that he killed Osama bin Laden, this navy SEAL attracts way to much attention to our country. He basically puts a target on us.

ReplyDeleteWeed, marijuana, pot, Mary Jane, what ever you may call it we all have always known it as a drug. But I’ll talk for medical use Florida. Marijuana is now legal in much of the United States. Now a billing photo was being voted on to determine if Marijuana was going to become legal for medical use in Florida. I feel the bill was too flimsy; it has many loopholes and ways to get around getting the substance. I feel if the bill tightened a little bit more, than covers all the holes and using wait for people to acquire marijuana, I feel this bill will be great for Americans and the people who actually need the drug to help them function throughout the day. Although amendment 2 did not pass by 2%, I feel once the bill id fixed and tightened up by the writers of the bill it will get the 60% required “yes” vote it needs to pass. Once this bill passes though, there will be talks of getting it legal for public use, for it to be sold commercially to the public, such as they have done in Denver, Colorado and Seattle, Washington. I feel medical marijuana is great to an extent.
ReplyDeleteI was almost for sure it was going to get more than 60 percent vote in Florida, but I was surprisingly proved wrong. I feel as if not as many showed up to vote for the medical marijuana long, but that is just a wild guess. I completely agree with you that once it is passed for most states, so many people will be using it that their will be a bill passed for public use. That is a great point. Once the majority of people are using it, I assure they will want it to be passed for public use.
DeleteCan drinking alcohol decrease the pain you feel? According to the European League Against Rheumatism annual congress in Paris, France, they believe it can. The researchers tested people who drank a small amount of alcohol compared to people who didn’t drink. The results pointed towards the fact that alcohol can be beneficial. The participants who drank the alcohol had decreased chronic pain and low levels of disability. The researchers had to take age, body mass index, employment status, smoking and pain levels into account. The greatest change was in females who drank 21-35 units per week. More tests showed that people who never drank were less likely to develop pain. Men who drank showed less signs of reduced pain compared to women. However, drinking alcohol can lead to some diseases so it is not recommended.

He died about 36 hours later.Salia tested negative for the disease on Nov. 7, days after becoming ill. He tested positive Nov. 10. Smith said "false negative" test results are possible in the first days of symptoms when the viral load is relatively low.Daniel Johnson, director of critical care at Nebraska Medical Center, said Salia was critically ill when he arrived at the hospital, where the medical team quickly had to combat kidney and respiratory failure. Salia was placed on dialysis, required a ventilator and received plasma from a surviving Ebola patient, the physicians said.Multiple medications included experimental ZMapp therapy, a new drug that has shown promise in fighting the disease. It is so sad how he caught the disease whole he was at work and died from it. Ebola is a serious matter that kills people and shouldn't be joked about.
ReplyDeleteCNN: Why U.S. Ebola patients seem to be recovering faster
ReplyDeleteFor a disease that kills more than half of its victims infected, Ebola in the United States is getting snuffed out a remarkably fast rate. When the doctor became the first United States Ebola patient, he was hospitalized for 19 days. One of the nurses was then infected and she was only hospitalized for 14 days. The question is why did the Ebola patients recover so quickly from this deadly disease? Some health experts have come up with the hypothesis that younger patients recover faster from Ebola rather than older ones. The two youngest people that were treated from Ebola were 26 and 29. Unlike in West Africa, where Ebola has killed close to 5,000 people, Americans have the advantage of better nutrition and better healthcare facilities. They have concluded that the faster you get quarantined that you will be more likely to live. This is because it gives the virus less time to develop and take over parts of the body. Of the nine Ebola patients infected, 8 of them have survived. They had all been treated at one of the country’s four hospitals that have been preparing for years to treat a highly infectious disease like Ebola.

ReplyDeleteRecently the Annual Tommy Tant Memorial Surf Classic happened and it was a great experience being there to witness it. There were many phenomenal surfers out in the water, with much talent. I am a surfer myself and it was a great learning experience watching the pro surfers out there that have been surfing nearly their whole lives. I did not compete in the contest, however, i participated in the paddle out service to celebrate Tommy Tant's amazing life. Practically all of the surfers at Flagler Beach on Sunday, the 16th, paddled out past the pier. We all gathered in a big circle and Tommy Tant's family started the ceremony with a prayer. We all prayed and then we started cheering and singing the Tommy Tant song. We then splashed all throughout the water and then we all came together and surfed together for about 20 minutes. It was an amazing and beautiful experience. I am so excited to be apart of the competition next year, for the last Tommy Tant memorial surf classic.

ReplyDeleteStanford archaeologist leads the first detailed study of human remains at the ancient Egyptian site of Deir el-Medina.
For years and years, Egyptologists seen evidence of the health care benefits in the old written records from the area their working at. An Osteoarchaeologist (which studies the ancient bones) founded the first study of human bones at their area. Old remains are found at the village's old cemeteries. The Osteoarchaeologist found heath problems with one of the mummies they located in the area. The mummy had an inflammation in the bone from a blood-borne infection; the man had been working while the infection was flowing through his body. Told from the written records the workers back then received a paid sick leave from the illness’s entire taking place then. The Osteoarchaeologist founded tombs where rodents infested the area many of the mummies were just skeletons by the year 2012 when the Osteoarchaeologist visited. From the bones you could find out if a person was disabled or, ill or had a problem with their bones. Egypt is a complex civilization with a long history and many stories to tell. Learning more and more about Egypt and its history as the time goes on to where it seems almost never ending.

ReplyDeleteMy current event this week is on the outrageous weather we have been having. Some say that this weather is winter like, but i think that it is just great. In Palm Coast, Florida, we are having our low temperatures in the 30's, but in the north, they already have snow. Some of the low temperatures are in the teens.
On November seventeenth, the temperature in Tennessee is 11 degrees, this is crazy last year the average temperature for them at this time of year is usually around 90 degrees, but now it is a whole lot colder than before. What does this mean for our winter? This winter, the weather is predicted to be very, very cold. So what does that mean for Florida? Florida is having an abnormal cold snap too, on the day after Halloween, the first cold snap came and it was very windy and did not get hot at all.
This is going to be a very cold winter, at least that’s what CNN said, but I believe that they are right, so to all of you people out there who love the cold, looks like it is time to grab them jackets and head out into the snow because there will be a lot of it.
This is actually very true! This year compared to last is much colder, in fact the temperature has dropped 9-12 degrees from last year (on an average). We have also been experiencing dramatic thunderstorms and raining spells.
DeleteI agree! The temperature in Palm Coast right now is so comfortable. I would hate to be living anywhere north of here because of the outrageous temperatures they have been getting. Some people are even dying trying to dig their way out of snow creeping right outside their doors. The lowest temperature (as of yesterday) was -11 degrees outside, while the highest was 77 degrees in California. I would love to live in California right now, but that is just not an option.
DeleteMy current event is about the snowfall in New York. The snowfall has been treacherous for people in Buffalo. People that live in this area are experiencing snow anywhere between three and six feet. Temperature has been a factor as well reaching down to twenty degrees and has the potential to go down to fourteen. According to the Associated Press, four people died Tuesday dude to the heavy snow. Three of the incidents were caused by cardiac arrest from shoveling snow, while the other one was due to an automobile accident. Two additional others died on Wednesday. Snow has been a factor for people in New York, and most people are getting majorly overwhelmed. According to NBC News, over one-hundred people in New York are trapped from the monstrous snow storm. I would hate to be living in Buffalo at this time of the year. I couldn’t imagine trying to dig my way out of a treacherous snow storm like this one! The twitter account of the Buffalo Bills football team announced that there is a huge amount of snow in their football stadium, and they need assistance. They stated that you should “show up with your shovel and start shoveling the snow so our football game against the New York Jets game this weekend. People that show up will be paid $10+ an hour and a ticket for the game on Sunday.”
ReplyDeleteIn recent weeks, Bill Cosby has been accused by many women of rape and sexual assault. These things happened in 1969 and 1982 for another woman. It is said that he has payed off fifteen women to keep quiet and when they were going to come clean were pressured by Cosby's lawyers.
ReplyDeletePersonally I believe that these women could very well be telling the whole truth. However at the same time they couldn't. Staying quiet since the early 70's and early 80's, doesn't seem to be very logical. I understand that they were payed and of course afraid to be labeled as "sluts" or "whores" but, that wouldn't stop you from sharing what is so important. Janice Dickinson says that she was so caged by this that she resolved to hurting herself.
To end, I believe that these women tell the truth. I believe that Bill Cosby has done these things. However, I also believe that it is open for debate as time passes.
The seventh leading cause of death in the United States is diabetes. Yet Americans and some doctors do not take this disease seriously. Dr. Carlos del Rio stated that he would be more concerned about diabetes than Ebola. Diabetes can cause blindness and it leads to amputation. Overall about 12.8% of Americans have diabetes. In 2012 it equaled 28.4 million people; with 8 million who have not been diagnosed. The thing is Americans do not see how serious diabetes is. Nowadays, with all these fast food restaurants, diabetes is getting easier and easier to get. My grandmother ended up getting both her legs amputated and about a year after that she died. Diabetes is a very serious disease. Living with this disease is not anything “minor” or easy. People suffer every single day of their lives with this disease. Some don’t even know they have it! 30 percent of people who have diabetes do not realize it.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that diabetes is cut short due to the amount of people that are ignorant of their health and wellbeing to care. Diabetes does correlate to the change in the American diet, which is leading to diabetes in more people, which should raise more concern about the disease.
DeleteI also agree, people neglect there health but complain when something bad happens, it really is a stupid matter that we have a problem for being unhealthy. if we could focus on being healthy and eating better, it wouldn't be a big problem.
DeleteThere's only two thousand giant pandas left in China, the birth rate is rapidly decreasing. But now, China thinks that they’ve figured out how to return them to the wild. There’s about a hundred and fifty cameras that keep ‘Papa Panda’, Zhang Hemin, up to date on the panda preschool. They’re restricting the human contact from the baby pandas so there’s no human odor. There is a strict dress code for the workers to abide by. They have their workers dress up in panda suits to bring the pandas their food and water and anything else that they need to keep the panda only environment. The preparation process for the baby pandas to be ready to go into the wild takes about two years, in those two years their environment has the look of the wild and they are provided food that they would possibly eat in the wild.

ReplyDeleteI do not believe that the blame should be placed on gun control, rather than the mental instability of the shooter. It was a crime of passion; if he didn't have a reason to use the gun, he wouldn't have used it. I believe that this current and similar future events could be avoided if their mental disorders are resolved.
DeleteThe general population of the United States of America have been getting sicker and sicker! You may have noticed that you are getting colds or a sickness more frequently then your average year. What could cause this to spread throughout the nation? A weakened immunity is most likely what is to blame! The FDA has been modifying food, this is called GMO food. GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism, and is how our foods are being altered every day. The point of Genetically modifying our foods are to reduce the bugs that attack the foods, and eventually kill off the bugs. But while doing this it dramatically reduces the nutrition values that are found in regular foods. Most of the foods in the local grocery store are intact GMO foods. Some companies have made products that are GMO free, this means that they are not genetically modified. But sadly, the FDA has said that companies do not have to release if the food is actually genetically modified or not. GMO foods have been linked to many sicknesses and are known to bring down one immune system. And a low immune system is obviously prone to more sickness throughout the nation. There are many ways that you can prevent yourself from getting sick, one might be to eat healthy with non GMO foods. And/Or just eliminate the sicknesses from your daily life by washing your hands regularly.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.cnn.com/2014/11/13/living/montgomery-county-schools-religious-holidays/index.html?hpt=hp_t4
ReplyDeleteThe school calendars in Montgomery Count in Maryland have advocated replacing the religious names of school breaks with secular names, such as ‘winter break’ instead of Christmas break. Reasons for doing so stem from the convenience of school breaks with Christianity and Jewish holidays and create inequality for other religions, such as Islam or Hinduism.
"They either skip school (an excused absence) to celebrate Eids or they skip their religious observances to attend school. Many choose to do the latter. However, this is not a choice that, for the most part, our Christian and Jewish neighbors face on their high holidays,” says says a statement on the website of the Equality for Eid Coalition, which has been advocating for Montgomery County to close school on Muslim holidays. Muslim children and families are torn between education and religious obligations and holidays, while Christians and Jews have been accommodated to by the school calendar. Winter break coincides with Christmas. Thanksgiving is intertwined with a break in Fall. Believers in other faiths simply wish for equality for all, which is the foundation of the Constitution.
“Arguments against the change have risen, claiming that the removal of Holiday names alienates some communities,” says Saqib Ali, a co-chairman of the Equality for Eid Coalition. “It brings us no closer to equality and it was done without any public notification.
I believe that the removal of Holiday names is a small step towards America being a heterogeneous culture that is composed of many pieces, but evenly distributed. It creates equality for the citizens rather than playing favorites towards Christianity or Judaism.
Wildlife experts have discovered a way to identify tigers that have killed or habitually targeted live stocked. Since every tiger’s stripes are different, wildlife experts are able to identify which tiger targeted/killed a person/livestock, by their stripes. There have been many cases where a tiger killed a human and the wildlife experts could not identify which tiger had done the killing. Two of these cases are: Two tigers from adjoining national parks in South India have recently been captured and placed in nearby zoos. One was an older cat that, perhaps, no longer able to catch natural prey, killed a person. The other was a younger animal that roamed outside of the protected area and killed livestock. With this new technology it will be harder to get the tiger wrong. Once the tiger is identified they can relocate it to a less populated area, which does not have any human interaction. The part of India where this occurred has about 400 tigers, one of the world’s largest populations. According to the wildcat conservation group Panthera, there are fewer than 3,200 left in the wild today, less than 7 percent of their former range. And, three subspecies have become extinct.
ReplyDeleteI hope they find the right one and move it somewhere else before someone or itself gets hurt!
DeleteFSU shooting-
ReplyDeleteOn a Thursday morning November 20th, 2014; there was gunfire in FSU’s library. Three students were wounded; the cops came in and ordered the gunman to drop his weapons but the physcopath actually shot at the policeman causing multiple shots from the other policeman and resulting in his death. Police stated that the gunman fired rounds both inside and outside the library. Luckily, the bullet only grazed one of the wounded victims. It is sad what this country has turned into, there have been many shootings lately at schools and public places such as a gunman armed with a shotgun opened fire at a small Christian college in Seattle, killing one person and wounding two others, and a 15-year-old gunman killed four other students in the cafeteria of a Seattle-area high school before turning the gun in himself last month. We may never know the reason behind the gunman’s actions towards the innocent FSU’s students, it must have been a big reason to go and shoot three students in the middle of the night, Hopefully everyone is okay and things can go back to normal soon. How are we supposed to be certain that the students are safe at their schools/colleges? If someone just came out of nowhere armed with a gun then we should upgrade the security.
CNN- White House and China set historic greenhouse emissions levels
ReplyDeleteThe US and China have now decided to make the agreement to reduce greenhouse emission levels as a way to prevent global warming from increasing its damage. This is a incredibly large historic remark as US and China, the world's main industrial countries, have decided to reduce its pollution amount and set a maximum to the amount produced. My personal opinion to this is that its a great way to prevent global warming from continuing at the fast pace it is going. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions will help us keep Antarctica from melting and save animals in danger along with prevent land from getting slowly flooded with water as the icebergs cover major parts of continents due to the water released from the icebergs. China and the US seem to now be on better terms and thinking in the right direction about pollution as it’s a step ahead those who don’t believe in global warming altogether so this change could better the world in the future as scientists have predicted the gases to peak at about 2030 which is relatively a short amount of time. Green house gases continue to affect our environment for the worst so stepping in the right direction is exactly what we need to have a positive impact.
On November 18, 2014 a crash took place in Bunnell, Fl. Unfortunately one life was lost that day. The decest persons was Ronald Evens of Palm Coast, FL. He was pulled over at the dollar general in a routine traffic stop. When FHP (Florida Highway Patrol) officer Robert Asbill pulled the male over, he realized something he was familiar with. He described the gentlemens eyes as glassy and having a very strong smell of marijuana exiting the care. Once the FHP officer went back to the state car, the male fled the scene at an excelerated speed. He ran an red light hitting a Dodge Ram. After that he continued at that speed and hit a parked pick –up truck. He ended up facing a bulidng in the grass where we later died in the drivers seat of the rent Impala.
ReplyDeleteDucks flying high. As the pac- 12 championship approaches Oregon (11-1) received five first-place votes and remained at No. 3 in this week's poll, and Arizona (10-2) jumped four spots to No. 8 following its 42-35 win over Arizona State in the Territorial Cup. The Sun Devils dropped four spots to No. 17, one place below UCLA.
ReplyDeleteSince its debut in 2011, the highest-ranked team the conference title game has featured was No. 7 Stanford last year, when it went on the road to play No. 11 Arizona State. The Cardinal were ranked eighth in 2012 when they hosted No. 17 UCLA and Oregon was No. 9 against unranked UCLA the year before that.
It's not worth reading too much into because the AP poll is irrelevant outside of serving as fodder for discussion, but one thing that stands out is that Michigan State, at No. 7, is the top-ranked two-loss team in the country when there is hardly a rational way to argue the Spartans' body of work is better than Arizona's.
Michigan State's two losses are both to teams in the top six. However, Arizona has three wins against ranked teams. Michigan State has one (against No. 25 Nebraska). Arizona beat Oregon in Eugene; Michigan State lost there. Case closed.
Of course, it doesn't really matter. These things have a way of working themselves out and if Arizona beats Oregon on Friday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, the Wildcats will be a strong candidate for the College Football Playoff.
CNN/ Teen Forced Chemo
ReplyDeleteConnecticut Supreme Court ruled Thursday that a 17 year old girl was not 'mature' enough to make her own medical decisions. The court then ruled that she was to undergo forced chemo therapy. Because she is a minor, her mother was allowed to go to the hearing and try to convince the court to let her daughter make her own decision. However, since she is sick, she couldn't even come to the hearing. She had to stay in the hospital during the trial. Cassandra was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in September. Doctors say that she has a 85% chance of survival if treated with chemo. If she does not do chemo, she is said to die in 2 years. Cassandra ran away from home when she was told to go to chemo, and missed several follow up appointments, justifying the court's decision that she was not mature enough to make her own medical decisions. The treatment is to continue for 6 months, and there is much hope she will come out of it okay.
