Five ways the CDC got Ebola wrong..// cnn
ReplyDeletePeople are telling patients to call or visit a doctor if they aren't felling well and chances of ebola. Doctors are now saying do you really want someone with ebola going through a public vehicle to get to a doctor or sitting next to a kid with a broken arm. The answer is no, and that is a way CDC is wrong about ebola. People are also saying that going to visit any hospital about ebola could cure the ebola, wrong again. Most hospitals aren't even prepared to face ebola patients because it is such a rare disease and is just coming back up in the U.S. Macgregor-Skinner, the global projects manager for the Elizabeth R. Griffin Foundation said that it is unfortunate that people say that because most hospitals can not cure ebola, little to none can because they are still having trouble finding a vaccine for the disease. The CDC also put too much trust in protective gear while taking care of first patient with ebola. Doctors also say that depending on "protective" gear is not the best option because it is not trustworthy enough to go on with your daily routine after taking care of a patient with ebola.
Ebola is a lethal disease and I am aware that most hospitals are not prepared to deal with an Ebola patient. I wouldn’t want them to come to a public hospital and possibly spread it further when the doctors aren’t even prepared to deal with it in the first place. Even though we are able to “treat” Ebola patients, there is no vaccine and health officials still cannot “fully” deal with it. Instead of going into a public place, I would call a hotline and be placed in isolation for the time being.
DeleteEbola is deadly, and your right the patients with ebola should not be treated in the public areas. They should be a special designated area where they could be treated.
DeleteEbola is a serious disease and people should know how to deal with it correctly. With the CDC giving out wrong information the spread of the disease could become worse. The right information should be given out so we can contain Ebola easier.
DeleteEbola is a scary and very lethal disease that can kill many people if it is not handled properly. Its true that you do not want someone sitting next to you in the waiting room because it might spread to them if you have it. If doctors can't handle it at the hospital then they should not even go to the hospital. Since there is no cure for ebola, it makes the disease that much scarier
DeleteJudy Muhe is 76 years young, and fell while in her kitchen and she couldn’t get up for two days. During the two-day period she says that her two dogs (10-years old Higgins and 4-year old Dodger) never left her side, they didn’t go to get food or water. With the near-fatal fall she could have lost her life if it weren’t for her “two guardian angels.” Judy lives by herself and has Parkinson’s disease; she was not able to get up on her own and drifted in and out of consciousness. One of her friends Kathy Jacobs had used her spare key into Judy’s house after not hearing from her for two day. When her dogs heard the door opening they dashed away from Judy to the door and back, as if trying to tell Kathy where she was lying. Because of her dogs Judy life was saved, and this act of kindness from them moved her to tears. When Judy fell she broke her shoulder and bruised her head. And, from her experiences she asks “for everyone to take good care of their pets, calling her own dogs ‘angels on four legs’” and she calls her dogs her guardians also she has no doubt that they would do it again for her.
ReplyDeleteIt’s really amazing that dogs are able to contemplate and do these kinds of things. This reminds me of a story on ABC 6 when veteran Terry McGlade was given a rescue dog after he was injured in battle. This dog would sense when he is going into seizures or anxiety attacks. Terry suffered a seizure and his dog stepped on his phone screen that was activated to call 911 and the ambulance came. Like Judy, Terry was saved by his pet. The difference is Judy’s dogs weren’t equipped to handle this situation and instead of calling 911, they alerted a friend of Judys when she walked through the door.
DeleteI think it's cool how the dogs stayed by her the whole time and helped show her friend where she was. If it wasn't for her dogs she could have died.
DeleteDogs are great and it is amazing how loyal and life changing they can be. Some people take their dogs for granted, but they are actually really smart. These dogs are definitely angels on four legs. This was a near life experience and if it weren't for her dogs then she probably wouldn't have survived. These incidents happen a lot to elderly people who live alone and I think its really important that these people have dogs to help them.
DeleteI think this is a great story of how dogs are great companions and how smart they actually are. Dogs are like 2-3 year old kids, they show some basic emotions, such as happiness, anger and disgust. They are smarter than we think that are and this is an article than can be used for proof.
DeleteThis is an amazing article. It shows that dogs are loyal and will never leave you by your side. She is right if it wasn't for her amazing dogs she probably wouldn't be here today. Dogs are very smart, loving, and make awesome friends.
DeleteThis article was well written and it's amazing to know how loyal dogs are. Once you start a relationship with a pet, you're the best of buddies until the very end; always there to help support you and comfort you. Animals are known for sensing danger or threat in ones owner. Therefore, when building a strong relationship you bond with them and truly get to know one another. Yes, you can argue the fact they're just animals, but it depends on your relationship with your pet.
DeleteI think this is an awesome story that shows the relationships humans have with their pets these days. Animals are really good at sensing danger and will do almost anything to protect their owner or loved one. Animals are very smart and we should learn to appreciate them more because of the kind acts they do for us humans. These dogs helped to change this persons life and if they were not there, the chances that she would be alive are very low.
DeleteI think it would be interesting to read an article on why people's pets are able to be so loyal to their owners. To read that a 76 year old woman was comforted by her pets through out the period of time she was on the ground is quite amazing. This is a cute and heart-warming article of how loyal pets are to their loved ones.
DeleteIt's absolutely amazing that dogs will do anything for their owners such as the article says "they never left her side even for food and water". Dogs truly are angels on earth. Animals are actually quite intelligent when it comes to serious situations like this one.
DeleteDogs really are really in tune with their surroundings. Its amazing how they can sense when people are feeling sad or upset and they just go to comfort them. This reminds me of this news story from a few years ago when a little dachshund saved his owners from a fire because the apartment above them was burning. The dog barked the owners awake, and they got out safely. It was really cool.
DeleteCNN- How ISIS Makes It’s Millions
ReplyDeleteThis article, on CNN, is about how the terrorist group ISIS is making their millions of dollars. Recently, we found out that ISIS smuggles millions of oil barrels. Where does all this oil come from? It comes from northern Iraq and northern Syria and recently, it has become easy to smuggle it out of southern Turkey. Here, inexpensive and smuggled oil is a commodity, where oil is so expensive it doesn’t matter if you are selling it to your enemy. The US coalition recently destroyed many ISIS oil facilities, but the US Treasury believes that ISIS is actually making millions (based on their weaponry and salaries). I don’t think that the US strike on ISIS’s oil facilities did much to affect their income. If the US believes that ISIS is making millions, there might not be just oil riches or more than we expected. ISIS also receives donations from sympathizers in places like Qatar and Kuwait. Also, ISIS is funded through organized crime in territories it controls. That means that ISIS can demand money (tax, toll, etc.) wherever it controls. I think it is going to be extremely tough to take down their funding because of the time it took to establish all of this. Their organized crime group has taken root and developed over many years. We have also gotten reports that people who want to take money out of their bank accounts have to make a donation to ISIS, furthering the problem. All that I know is that ISIS has plenty of ways to get money, and not just by oil facilities.
A second health care worker in Dallas has contracted Ebola. The news cast doesn’t trust the hospital’s ability to treat Ebola. There is not good safety protocols going on and the hospital sent Thomas Duncan home even after he showed symptoms of Ebola. An official says Duncan should have been moved to Emory University Hospital or Nebraska Medical Hospital where they have bio containment units and have been preparing how to deal with Ebola for years. 75 health care workers and 48 other people who had contact with Duncan are being monitored. The woman who has just contracted Ebola in America was on a plane from Dallas to Cleveland. The plane was removed from service after they learned the woman had Ebola. This infection marks the second transmission of Ebola in the United States. The other person who contracted Ebola in the United States, Nina Pham, said she was doing well on Tuesday. I think, like the officials said, that the hospital in Dallas is not fit to treat Ebola. This will only make things worse and more nurses will contract Ebola from patients in the hospital. This is also a little scary that now two people have Ebola in the United States. I hope this situation doesn’t get worse and when patients are being treated they get treated in the right hospitas.
ReplyDeleteRecently, Buddy Taylor Middle School was on the news for a “friendly fade” fight. Two students agreed to fight for a little bit while being videotaped in the locker room of the school. A friendly fade happens when two people agree to fight for a little bit and return as friends after. These fights are usually recorded and posted on social media. The mother of one of these students actually handed the video to News Channel 13 to put the word out there about fights increasing in school. I think that it crazy how two friends can agree to fight each other for fun just to get attention. These girls are now in trouble with the law. The sad thing is that the administrators had no idea that the fight even took place until they watched the news. The Flagler County Public School officials say that they are going to address this problem during a school assembly. Fights in school have become a regular thing because that is how people get attention. Parents are not liking the fact that there was a fight during school hours and nobody even knew about it. They want to know what is going on in their child’s education. It is horrible how these things occur right under the noses of the administrators.
ReplyDeleteI think it is sad that these types of things are happening these days, like who in the right mind would have a "friendly fade" fight, and why? What's the point? All you're going to get is attention for a bit and disciplinary action will be taken. What's even sadder is that the administrators didn't even know about the incident until the video of the incident was posted on News Channel 13. Administrators are obviously not doing their jobs to the best of their abilities at Buddy Taylor Middle School to keep students safe and out of trouble.
DeleteI think its bad that the world has come to these types of things today. The kids are doing this mainly for attention and to prove who is better or stronger. The sad part is that these were two friends that agreed to fight. I think measures should be taken to stop these fights because its not normal for “friends” to fight each other. This should be a huge wake up call to all schools across the nation.
DeleteI will never understand the hype about fist fights at school. I personally think they are uninteresting and pointless, because what do people really get out of fighting? What sense of satisfactory or achievement do they feel after abusing someone and being abused back? Develop a hobby or talent, discover a new place, or do what you should have been doing in the first place. There are so many other things and activities that people could be doing instead of a fight or "friendly fade" as they call it. While I realize that the world will never be perfect and stupid events like this will continue to occur, our youth is failing to realize how pointless fighting actually is and it can make a huge impact on this generation's future of solving problems and communicating with each other.
Delete"Friendly Fades" are on the next level of stupidity. How can two friends just want to fight for attention and then go back to their lives as friends? It doesn't make any sense whatsoever; And why is there even fights at school? We are here to learn not to get attention by getting a bloody nose. This needs to stop because humanity is just getting dumber by the minute, and it needs to get restored.
DeleteStock market panic takes a time out. The United States stocks ended the day trading mostly unchanged, rebounding from an early 200-point plunge on the Dow that was sparked by fears of a global slowdown. The results were triggered by a Federal Reserve official who suggested the central bank could abandon its plan to pull away the easy money punch bowl that's been juicing stock prices for years. However, many argue that the market loves free money, and they should not attempt to fight it. And of course, a factor in this whole controversy also has to do with Ebola hitting Europe, plunging oil prices. For example, just look at Wednesday, when the Dow plummeted as much as 460 points but ended the day down "only" 173 points. The Nasdaq briefly hit correction territory on Thursday, signaling a 10% decline from a previous closing high. But it's since bounced back from those levels. Despite closing off its lows, the Dow did fall 25 points Thursday. That means it's closed lower for six days in a row for the first time since 2013.
ReplyDeleteThe Seattle Seahawks made a very surprising move on Friday afternoon, trading wide receiver Percy Harvin to the New York Jets. This trade due to how much Seattle invested into Harvin surprised many people. But behind the scenes in the Seahawks locker room he was not mixing well with the other players. He reportedly gave Golden Tate a black eye before the Super Bowl last season. Furthermore, in the Seahawks' loss last week against the Dallas Cowboys, Harvin refused to re-enter the game after he was dinged up earlier, despite Seattle's need for a quick scoring drive to retake the lead. Seattle’s coach Pete Carrol preaches team chemistry more than any coach in the league so you know he is glad to see Harvin leave. Percy Harvin has been the highest paid receiver on the team yet ranked fifth in snaps played out of the team’s receivers. Freeing up the cap space can allow them to build their team and make another run for a championship. Percy Harvin’s attitude and ego cost him from going from the best team in the entire NFL to the Jets, the Jets….
ReplyDeleteCNN- New York executive describes for jury how she killed her son
ReplyDeleteFormer pharmaceutical executive Gigi Jordan at first appeared calm as she described for a New York jury the last time she saw her son alive, those now-fuzzy final moments before she gave the 8-year-old autistic boy a lethal drug concoction. She ordered him food. She may have put on a movie for him. Little Jude Mirra's vocabulary was limited. He typed on a BlackBerry to communicate with her. "We were typing throughout some period of time. We were saying goodbye to each other," Jordan told the Manhattan jury on Thursday, October 9th during her second-degree murder trial. She began to cry. "At some point, I put the pills together," she recalled. "I gave him the pills." "Which drugs did you give him more of?" defense lawyer Allan Brenner asked. "A lot more of the Ambien," she said. "I gave him more Xanax, but the Ambien is the one I gave him the most of. I gave him Hydrocodone which were large. I was drinking a vodka orange and there was a little left. I broke up the pill and put it into the juice mixed with vodka." The chilling details came during Jordan's second day on the stand. The defense team is trying to convince the jury that Jordan was a desperate mother ultimately driven to kill Jude because she felt caught between her two ex-husbands. One ex-husband had allegedly threatened to kill her, a crime that would have left Jude with her other ex, his biological father, who she believed had sexually abused the boy......Jordan, charged with second-degree murder, faces 15 years to life in prison if convicted.
This is a very sad case but I believe that Gigi Jordan could have done something else to protect herself and her son from a sexually abusive father. Killing her son and trying to attempt suicide wasn't the right way out of the situation she was in.
News articles like this make me realize how scary some cases that are brought to court really are. Imagine being that mother, scared of not one, but two ex husbands! She had a disabled child too, and that makes this more scary. That kid probably had no say in what was going on, let alone a double suicide. Its kind of terrifying really to think about your own mother doing that...
DeleteNewsela- Going to school online to stay away from school bullies
ReplyDeleteKelsey Hooten was very afraid of starting the seventh grade because she was bullied in sixth grade. In the sixth grade people started calling her names and, started spreading rumors about her. It even became physical. They started pushing her to the ground and pulling her hair. Krista( Kelsy's mother) and her husband decided that it was time for a change and pulled kelsey out of public school, and put her in an online school called Ohio Virtual Academy. Krista said that Kelsey did not explain to her how badly the situation was. Ever since they took her out of public school, Kelsey has been much happier. Ohio Virtual Academy is very strict on bullying and does not tolerate it. This academy was perfect for her. She said "I am happier now that I am apart of this academy. Bullying is a huge problem and needs to be stopped immediately. The article states that one-third of all U.S children are targeted each year. Thats around 13 million students.
Recently, after watching the Daily Show in the comfort of my home. I saw that the I.S.I.S. was attacked at the following locations: Syria, including headquarter buildings, storage facilities, a finance center, supply trucks, armed vehicles and training compounds. After interviewing General Anthony Zinni, he knew we, as America, would be in an armed conflict because “we’ve been at it for quite a bit.” Also, General Zinni shared that “in the last 25 years since the end of the cold war, we’ve never figured out what this world is all about and what our place and role is in it. We’ve intervened in places without a strategy and a clear understanding of what we needed to do, if we needed to do anything.”
ReplyDeleteAlso, these people are bad people, preforming genocides and sending 13-14 year old girls to war. It’s almost as if a sense of guilt for letting the Holocaust to go on for so long, Csaigon, Ambodia and with the Khmer Rouge. As the United States, our strategy is seeing the abilities to transition nations that may be locked in the ninth or tenth century into something like the Jeffersonian Democracy and free market economy. The problem is, we try to impose and election doesn’t equal democracy. We try to inexpensively do it, but at the back end of World War II, George Marshall, Truman, Kennon and others understood that it couldn’t possibly be done on the cheap. Lastly mentioned by General Zinni, “we don’t have the size and the resources to do it and we get mired down and we don’t have the cost or be willing to expend the cost necessary to achieve this. So, we’ve forgotten how it should be done. We’ve forgotten how to apply all our elements of power.”
In conclusion, 4 Arab nations are also flying in the missions over Syria, Saudia Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. Defense officials concern that a fifth nation, Qatar, is also helping in the effort but not by air
Khorasan is a shawdowy group of about 50 veteran Al Qaeda fighters from Afghanistan who the U.S., considers far more dangerous than I.S.I.S. Jessica Williams, Senior pentagon correspondent, believes that this is “not a “war, it’s a counterterrorism strategy involving open and declared armed conflict.”

ReplyDeleteAfter watching the news all week I have discovered that we should not worry as much about the ebola outbreak as much as a new virus that has reached us and has already killed a young boy.
ReplyDeleteThis virus starts out as a normal cold but, it soon hits the respiratory system making it hard to breathe. The mother of the boy didn't know about it, until it was too late. And so far it has spread to more than 1,000 children across 12 states! Children's Hospital Colorado has reported that 86 kids have been hospitalized out of more than 900 treated for severe respiratory illness since of August 18th.
Doctors say to wash your hands with soap and water for two minutes. Do not just sanitize, you have to wash your hands to kill the germs. Since children do not understand this, they are more able to catch this virus more than anyone.
Information - http://www.webmd.com/children/news/20140908/respiratory-virus-hitting-kids-in-at-least-10-states
It's scary knowing that germs are everywhere and because kids aren't doing the simplest things such as washing their hands can cause such a threatening virus, hopefully people now understand the importance of cleansing themselves to stay healthy.
DeleteCNN: Why U.S. Ebola patients seem to be recovering faster
ReplyDeleteFor a disease that kills more than half of its victims infected, Ebola in the United States is getting snuffed out a remarkably fast rate. When the doctor became the first United States Ebola patient, he was hospitalized for 19 days. One of the nurses was then infected and she was only hospitalized for 14 days. The question is why did the Ebola patients recover so quickly from this deadly disease? Some health experts have come up with the hypothesis that younger patients recover faster from Ebola rather than older ones. The two youngest people that were treated from Ebola were 26 and 29. Unlike in West Africa, where Ebola has killed close to 5,000 people, Americans have the advantage of better nutrition and better healthcare facilities. They have concluded that the faster you get quarantined that you will be more likely to live. This is because it gives the virus less time to develop and take over parts of the body. Of the nine Ebola patients infected, 8 of them have survived. They had all been treated at one of the country’s four hospitals that have been preparing for years to treat a highly infectious disease like Ebola.
Newsela- Science program for girls sparks controversy
ReplyDeleteOver the past decade, the Carnegie Science Center (CSC) has worked to be a leader in offering science education for girls. The museum has created programs such as science sleepovers and visits to science labs. Its website, CanTEEN, engages tween and teen girls in science through contests, exhibits and workshops.
So CSC was quite surprised to come under attack for its sole offering for the Girl Scouts. The program, called “Science With a Sparkle,” teaches girls how to become a “cosmetic chemist.”
The controversy began after part of a page from one of the museum's brochures appeared online. The page showed a long list of serious science programs for Boy Scouts, such as robotics, engineering and astronomy. Its only offering for Girl Scouts was the workshop on how to create your own makeup.
The next day, websites and blogs such as Jezebel and Wonkette, wrote about it angrily. “Marie Curie may very well rise from her grave to gnash her teeth,” Jezebel wrote. Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in physics.
One of the biggest topics in education is how to make science interesting to girls, and careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) more attractive. Wonkette said despite that goal, "you’re offering MAKEUP?” The blog added that the course was too old-fashioned and stuck in a different time period, such as the 1950s.
Comments appeared on the Science Center’s Facebook page as well, calling the museum “shameful” and “ridiculous."
The Science Center responded last week with long posts explaining the thinking behind the program. It had tried other programs to appeal to Girl Scouts in the past, such as engineering, chemistry and robotics. However, few Girl Scouts signed up for them. The only programs the Science Center could fill were museum sleepovers and Science With a Sparkle.
In my opinion, what should be changed about this program is giving more courses and having more options available for females. While I understand that the makers of Science with a Sparkle are attempting to have a more appealing approach to females, and some girls may only be interested in cosmetic chemistry, there are plenty of young women who would rather be learning about robotics, engineering, and other sciences. When I was younger, I was enrolled in a science program for females called GEMS- Girls Exploring Math and Science. One of the focuses were cosmetic science where we made our own lip glosses. While it was fun and I did learn quite a lot, what I really enjoyed about the program was that we also had other courses, including robotics and aeronautical engineering. In conclusion, I understand Science with a Sparkle's approach to empower young females and get them more interested in science, but cosmetic chemistry should not be their only option
because if anything, one option will limit their opportunities to be more engaged in STEM.
Supreme Court allows gay marriage to proceed in South Carolina-
ReplyDeleteSouth Carolina is the 35th state to legalize gay marriage. After this law was published, many gay couples come to the courthouse and receive positive responses towards their requests of marriage. What I don’t understand is why is this such “great news” it shouldn’t be “great news” or “odd” this should be normal. There are many gay people all around the world and everyone no matter what kind of person you are should deserve to be able to get engaged, no questions asked. It doesn’t matter if you’re straight, gay, Bisexual, transsexual, pansexual, etc. everyone should have the privilege to marry whoever they want to marry. Maybe that’s why there are so many depressants in this country, it’s because society has made everyone so afraid to even deal with their passionate romantic beliefs (coming out and saying they’re GBTPE (gay, bi, transsexual, pansexual, etc.)). Society has caused people to become depressed because they’re too afraid to “come out of the closet” and be judged on their sexual orientation, so for states now to be legalizing gay marriage it will most likely decrease the depression and suicidal rate tremendously in the United States population.
On October 22, just before he was to board an Avianca flight to Bogota, Colombia, Venezuelan doctor Manuel Alvarado was detained at Miami International airport for cracking a joke about having explosives. A security officer was asking him some routine questions, when Alvarado answered that he was carrying C-4 explosives. Security is trained to overreact and assume there is evil intent. No one should joke around about a situation like this because it can produce fear and panic throughout the airport. After 9/11, airport security increased and became much stricter. Alvarado was charged with a fine of almost $90,000. Although this may seem ridiculous, because of Alvarado’s wisecrack, the airport had to be evacuated, the bomb squad was brought in, and flights were delayed. People do not realize how dangerous a simple comment can be.
ReplyDeleteCNN/ Ebola Vaccine Progress
ReplyDeleteSoon the ebola vaccine will be tested on healthy patients in Africa. This is promising for finding a cure for this worldwide disease. There are no known side effects as of now, other than joint pain, which they figured wasn't a harmful enough side effect to stop the development of a vaccine. Marie-Paule Kieny says that there are two major vaccines that seem to have promise for being successful. One vaccine comes from Merck and NewLink and the second vaccine comes from and is licensed by GlaxoSmithKline. Trials are to start soon, but there are also vaccines being developed in places like the United States and Russia. Even if the news seems to have died down a bit and infection rates seem to be slowing down, people are still dying from infections. There have been 19,340 cases with 7,518 deaths in the countries affected by the epidemic. Hopefully those vaccines are successful.
