The director of the secret service, Julia Pierson is now being questioned after a man with a knife jumped the white house fence and made it up to the second floor. On September 19, 42-year-old Omar Gonzalez overpowered a Secret Service officer and made it to the East Wing on the second floor. The ball was most definitely dropped by the secret service that day, and the director should be reprimanded as she ineffectively placed a small amount of guards in the area of the jumper. According to outside sources, basic protocol in that incident was not followed by the secret service in order to protect the home and the first family. According to the same source, the alarm box was muted minutes before the jump. I feel that this was an inexcusable act of poor security and the director should be put on temporary leave in order for them to explore more options for a director.

    1. I agree with you when you say that it was an act of poor security because it was. No person should be able to overpower a Secret Service officer and make it to the 2nd floor of the East Wing. But most importantly, it was an extremely terrible idea, but also ironic, to mute the alarm box and not conduct the correct protocol afterwards. I was reading more about this and I found out that Omar Gonzales scaled the White House fences, didn’t get caught, and went through an unlocked door (which should’ve been locked) into the mansion. Why weren’t there any agents to get him and where were they?

    2. I think that this is very embarrassing. How can they possibly allow someone to enter without notice, and that person could of done some bad damage. They are probably going to make the security a lot better now, but they will also have to spend lots of money to make it better. This is a disgrace and they should definitely do something about this situation. I hope that this doesn’t get too popular or else we could get in trouble.

    3. Basic protocol was made for a reason and people need to follow it, especially a secret service officer. It is crazy how someone could jump over the White House fence without anybody noticing. These security officers need to do a better job. I agree that the security director should be on temporary leave because it should have never happened in the first place. There are definitely better security directors out there that would make sure these mistakes do not happen.

    4. Personally, I believe she doesn't deserve to be ridiculed for her mistake. Honestly, its the secret service agent's fault for failing to apprehend the suspect, it was his job to stay on point and protect the white house from intruders. The front yard of the white house is large and someone should've caught Gonzalez before he was able to enter the white house. The director shouldn't be to blame for the agents mistake, the agent should've been the one to be fired for his own failure to complete his job accurately.

    5. I most definitely agree that when you say that the ball was dropped. The guards should not have been easily maneuvered, to where a civilian could get past then. But, I also do not think the director should get reprimanded for it, because she didn't make the mistake. It was the security guards fault for not doing a good job.

    6. I completely agree with you Brendan, someone screwed up, I feel that someone should be more than just relieved I feel he should be punished. For an intruded to be able to make it up to the second floor of the white house is completely insane, and they complete lack of security. Director should be looked at and investigated there was no reason for this to occur when he should’ve been a stop as soon as he walked on property.

  2. CNN UAE's first female fighter pilot led airstrike against ISIS
This post on CNN, posted September 26, 2014 by Dana Ford, is about how the United Arab Emirate’s first female fighter pilot led an airstrike against ISIS. Yousef Al Otaiba of the UAE told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that, “She is a fully qualified, highly trained, combat ready pilot, and she led the mission.” Along with the United States, the UAE and other Arab nations are firing airstrikes against ISIS (in Syria). On my post on September 15th- 21st I stated that some people don’t believe that other Arab nations aren’t willing to do anything. Because the UAE is air striking ISIS, as well as us, that proves that we are momentarily allies on this situation. Now, what type of society does one want? Says Al Otaiba. Arabs and Muslims want to put a stop ISIS, they aren’t “with” them at all. They are a threat, and threats need to be taken down.
Also, this is a great victory for woman, proving they can/ are able to do something like this. Al Mansouri, the woman that conducted the airstrike, said that it took almost 10 years for the decision to be made. By her being able to do this proves there isn’t a difference between men and woman fighter pilots. They both want to defend their country and will do whatever it takes to do so.

    1. Could you elaborate a little bit more on the 10 years that it took her to get permission to become a fighter in UAE. I definitely like that this Post was partially on woman's rights Arab nations.

    2. I feel like this is an important turning point in the issue with women fighting in the war. There is an ongoing argument on whether women are allowed to have the same rights as men in the army. So to see that they looked past her gender and looked at her qualifications is a positive thing. And to see that she conducted the mission well is to prove that women are just as capable as men.

      Delete
    3. I'd be interested in learning how long it would take to finalize the decision for a man to be the fighter pilot. As great as women having more rights is, Its very hard to believe. However, I am proud that women like her are willing to go through the system and consider herself the equal to men.

  3. U.S. Ready to Strike ISIS in Syria, Military Officials Say

The Military has all of the information they need to organize a strike on ISIS, all we need is for Obama to approve the mission. Intelligence and Military targeting specialists have been working on finding a list of targets. Hopefully, the list will be brought to Obama one more time and analyze the risks of bombing inside Syria. The list will be briefly described to Obama because he doesn’t need to know every target on the list all he needs to do is approve the mission, the military sets the time, date, and location of the strike.

The Secretary of Defense said that he and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Martin Dempsey approved the mission to strike Syria. The General, Lloyd Austin, briefed Obama on the strike. If Obama approves the strike, the Drone will use precision guided Missiles to accurately take out the enemy. Using this method will almost guarantee no civilian casualties from the bombs. We are organizing this strike to assure an impact to ISIS and not just take bomb munitions and vehicles, we are hoping to devastate the ISIS infrastructure and hopefully collapse their leaders.

  5. Academic skills on web are tied to income level

This article interested me because in Flagler County, middle school and high school students are provided a computer to take home to do homework assignments. The research that the University of Connecticut conducts is to demonstrate the lack of online literacy among all students, poor or rich. If Flagler County did not write a grant to get these computers, I wonder how our students would have done in this experiment. Some schools have not caught up with teaching students the skills needed to navigate digital information. This is a problem because a lot of jobs today require some type of computer experience. Meaning that they will need to know how to use a computer and find information the right way for their job. More and more technology is being invented and soon everything will involve a computer, so that is why it is crucial for students to be gaining some knowledge about technology. Unfortunately, some schools can’t afford to have computers for their students to use, so these kids are more behind than ever. Although some students prefer paper over computers, technology is changing the world and sometimes you just have to go with it. Few teachers are incorporating digital literacy into their curriculum because so many people use the internet during leisure time. The research done in this article involves students using their research skills on a computer. They compared the keywords used and the credibility of the website. They found that families with an income of 100,000 performed better than a family with the income of 60,000. This was from a wealthy district and a middle-class one. Social media is also increasing with technology.

    1. I think this is interesting that technology is very important in this day of age and we, as a school, have taken it upon ourselves to provide our students with all these devices to better ourselves for the future. As you said, most jobs now require you to have at least some experience with computers and how to use them. By us students being exposed to this at a young age, we are getting prepared for collage and a career. Our tests and homework are now on a computer screen instead of on paper (like most students are used to). And if you like writing on paper more than typing on a computer, oh well. The world leaves behind the people who are not able to go with it. Also, it is kind of evident that people with a higher income have better research skills because they were exposed to technology and know how to use it so they can perform certain jobs.

    2. Technology is very important now and it's not good that the poorer schools don't have enough money to buy their students computers. Like you said, they are only going to fall even more behind.

      Delete
    3. I think that technology makes our lives easier if we use it correctly, but on the other hand they are very expensive. I believe that if your school can pay for computers than they should supply all the students with computers. If your school is poor unfortunately this schools will have to stay with paper. I also don’t think that computers are mandatory to use in learning but I believe that they will help a lot.

      Delete
    4. Technology is a great thing however, we as a society rely on digital technology too much. Schools and people in general need to rewind to a time of face to face contact, handwritten, cursive, letters on real paper, and other timeless and loved features of society.

    5. I was actually recently thinking the opposite of this. I found that the laptops were just a distraction to students during class and have created more problems, such as no internet access or corrupted WiFi. I guess this can go to the pros list. I do, however, have to agree with Brendan that we are relying on technology way too much. But you can't change something as big as the technology age, you just have to advance along side of it.

      Delete
    6. Despite the district supplying students with laptops, I personally have found that they're used mostly to pull students' attention away from classes, albeit happening less often in Honors and AP classes. They give students the urge to have it easy in life and once they start, it's hard to stop them from wanting to play games, IM, etc. throughout class.

    8. I agree with you. Technology is very important and makes our lives easier. Its sad for me because I am used to paper especially when it comes to taking test and doing homework. Overall you are right if we aren't used to technology by now we will only be left behind.

      Delete
    9. Yes, technology is nice to have because it makes things easier, but at the same time, I feel like we are starting to become too reliant on it . Lets face it, there is always a glitch with technology, and if we become too dependent on it, if something goes wrong, we will probably have no idea as to how to solve a problem without technology. Not only that, but we might become super lazy which is really unhealthy. Also, Technology is really expensive, and taking away funds from school clubs and extra curricular activities is a bad Idea. I'd rather be active and participate in clubs and programs instead looking at a computer screen.

      Delete
    10. Yes, technology is nice to have because it does make our life easier. But, in some aspects the students should know who to spell, and write properly. They should also still use paper and pencil to do their work. Also, the kids are becoming too reliant on the technology to do their daily task.

  6. CNN: Possible Misconduct in Ferguson Grand Jury

In Ferguson, August 9th, Michal Brown was shot dead by police officer, Wilson. Prosecutors are investigating whether there is enough evidence to charge against Wilson for shooting Brown. Someone that knows a member of the grand jury said there isn’t enough evidence to warrant an arrest. Brown was killed when officer Wilson told him to get out of the street. Brown was shot at least six times, including twice in the head. I think that if Wilson shot Brown for self-defense, one shot in the head would have been enough. Since he shot Brown twice in the head, I think the reason for the shooting could have been something else. Brown was unarmed and witnesses even say he had his hands in the air. Federal officials are also investigating the Ferguson Police Department’s record with minorities. The shooting caused protests, and community leaders say the police showed an excessive amount of force to the protestors. The head of chief police, Jackson said, “It's never been the intention of the Ferguson Police Department -- or any police department that I know -- to intentionally target individuals because of race”. Jackson has also made a video apology to Brown’s parents and peaceful protestors. I think the police in Ferguson could have handled this situation better, by not harming any of the protestors. Even though people can’t be racially discriminated against legally, it is still happening today, and what is happening in Ferguson is a good example of that.

    1. The Brown-Wilson case has definitely been a topic of debate, mimicking the Trayvon Martin case. However, I believe that the protestants are the vocal minority, and should be labelled as extremists. Protesting and rioting won't affect the overall outcome of the case and one police officer does not represent the possible offending party.

      Delete
    2. Was there a motive of any kind that gave a reason for such a shooting. I am also surprised that there is in excessive amount of force being used against protesters.

    3. Sadly, racism is alive and well. Racism and discrimination have been used as powerful weapons encouraging fear or hatred of others. I don't think racism is right, especially in the Brown-Wilson case. I believe that every person should be treated equally, nobody should be treated differently especially by the color of their skin but not everybody seems to think so.
*Luke 6:31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.*

    4. It is sad that these things are happening because nobody should be shot 6 times in a case like this. The police officer did not handle the situation correctly and he should not have done what he did. I agree that there must have been some other reason to why the officer shot Michal Brown. It does not add up because witnesses say that Brown had his hands up, so why would Officer Wilson shoot? Unfortunately, race is a big reason on why these issues happen. I think these problems will continue to happen because people are always going to have a problem with race.

Hazmat team is at quarantined Dallas apartment where Ebola patient stayed -
I believe that we need to be careful with this patient. It would become a nightmare if this virus were spread. The scariest part is that it is a fast killing disease and we don't have a cure for it. A hazardous materials team has arrived at the Dallas apartment where four contacts of U.S. Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan are under quarantine. This Thomas Eric Duncan guy was using these sheets and pillows and they say that if somebody touches what he used, that person can get Ebola. According to this doctor that was at that hospital said that the ebola virus can live on what that guy has touched and it can also be spread to whoever touched it. New test could rapidly diagnose Ebola Hazmat crew at quarantined apartment Ebola victim's half-brother speaks Ebola patient in U.S. in stable condition
Ebola can spread through contact with an infected person's bodily fluids like blood, feces or vomit. 1. I think we need to be more aware of the Ebola virus because of its ability to spread fast and violently. There is no cure for it at the moment, so we need to be very cautious when dealing with it. If we are not careful Ebola could spread and a majority of the population could be wiped out. I think this a very serious measure and we should over prepare for this virus if it spreads across the United States.

  9. CNN: Third high school football player dies in a week

A varsity football player for suburban New York high school died after colliding with an opponent during a game. Tom Cutinella, a 16-year-old student at Shoreham-Wading River High School, suffered a serious head injury during Wednesday night’s game against Elwood-John H. Glenn High School. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died. He was the third high school football player to die in the last week. In Alabama, Demario Harris Jr., 17, of Charles Henderson High School in Alabama died Sunday, two days after making a tackle in a football game. The cause of death was a brain hemorrhage, that was caused by a hit he took in Friday’s game. On September 26, Isaiah Langston, a 17-year-old student at Rolesville High School in North Carolina, collapsed on the field before the game. On Monday, his family confirmed that he had passed away. The official cause of death is unknown but his older brother told WTVD that his collapse on the field “had something to do with a blood clot in his brain.” These deaths have changed football in each of these communities and the kids that died will be forever remembered.

    1. I think that there needs to be more protection somehow in the football gear especially in high school students since their bodies can still be in the process of growing making them more fragile I also think that they need to be more accurate where they place their players to create a better chance for a player not to get injured. That being said I think that football is a world wide sport and people can die from almost anything so as in the seriousness of this condition I don’t think it’s a major issue.

  10. Newsela- Students say - "don't change our history"

Near Denver, about 1,000 students went to the streets and protested about changing our history standards. They believe that the way history is taught makes America look bad. They want more positive lessons about the U.S history and fewer lessons on the negative. They were explaining to school board member Julie Williams that schoolbooks say too many negative things about the U.S. They fear that if they continue to learn more about this that it might change their thinking. They also fear that they will no longer feel proud of their country. Williams plan was to make a balance by learning about both the good and the bad. Some supporters disagree, they think that learning about America's problems and mistakes is good thing. In my opinion I think that there should be a balance. We need to hear both sides. It is good that we learn about the positives. On the other hand it is also very important that we learn about our problems and mistakes.

    1. We have had our ups and downs in history however, fact is fact and we should not have to censor how we got to be this great nation that we are today. History lessons should uncover ALL facts not only those pushed by "standards" in which we are forced to follow but to be able to suffice the strong backbone of our nation.

    2. The U.S. is infamous for its poor history. I think history is taught perfectly fine today. Students need to understand that the truth is the truth and they must be taught that. If we sugar coat everything or skip over some of the bad things, how will students learn about thinking before acting. They have to learn from America's mistakes and realize how important and significant your choices can be and what the wrong choice can lead to.

    3. How are we supposed to learn from history if we don't know the negative things we've done? It's ignorant to think America hasn't made and any mistakes, why would we want to make our next generation ignorant? I think we should put the truth in our history books, whether it be good or bad.

    5. We only learn from our mistakes and i believe knowing the negative things that have happened in history would help us not make that mistake again. We would really learn from both the positive and negative things in history. We need to be taught the truth and everything not just what the government thinks we need to know. What happened when the only generation that knows about the mistakes we have made past away and the next generation makes the same problems?

      Delete
    6. The United Stated has definitely has some rough times throughout our history, but if you don’t learn about the bad things then who will ever know what we’ve done? I do agree with the students though, we should teach our youth more about the good things we have done throughout history. They also have to know some of the bad things to equal out the views on the United States. The truth is the truth no matter how bad it can be.

      Delete
    7. Yes, Even though America's track sheet isn't the cleanest, we should not try to change anything with what we are being taught. I feel that trying to sugar coat the passed is not only an embarrassment, but is also an Insult to our intelligence. What's done is done, so lets learn from our mistakes instead of cowering and trying to cover them up.

    8. I believe we learn from our mistakes. A mistake can be positive or negative, so America has made many mistakes. So therefore, we have to learn from them, even is there are a lot of negative.

  11. CNN: Elaborate Video Shows Entire Security Breach at White House (10/02/14)

Omar Gonzalez, a 42 year old man, had jumped the White House fence and had even entered the White House on September 19th. Gonzalez had allegedly knocked over a female guard by the doors, had a knife in his pocket at the time, and is an Iraq veteran. He had made it into the East Room before being tackled by an officer, said by Secret Service sources.
Gonzalez pleads to be not guilty of invading a restricted building, armed. The judge is having him mentally tested to see if he can stand trial.
Apparently, the alarm box had been shut down because of the complaints by employees about it being too loud, and a canine unit was not sent out to find the culprit because there were, "too many friendlies around." Then, inquiries uncovering certain security lapses had lead to the resignation of Julia Pierson, the first female director of the Secret Service. This called for new leadership in the Secret Service. Now, Homeland Security Director, Jeh Johnson, stated that his department will run an internal inquiry of the Secret Service. He is appointing a new panel to review security in the White House. Meanwhile, Joseph Clancy will be the interim Director of the Secret Service, as announced by Johnson.

Deprived of hope, his sergeant had reminded him of his family whom he dedicated his life to protect and serve. He would be returning to a family that would never be the same, much like thousands of others.
The American Veterans Disabled For Life Memorial was established this Sunday for the soldiers that have endured physical sacrifice, such as the loss of limbs of veteran Dennis Joyner from an explosion, or physical sacrifice, such as post-traumatic stress disorder.
"Let's never rush into war, because it is America's sons and daughters who bear the scars of war for the rest of their lives," Obama said as he delivered a speech at the ceremony. He is hesitant to send troops into the Middle East without full-fledged support to get the job done, as war not only affects soldiers, but also their families, whom have to deal with a physically or emotionally scarred father/mother or even their death. The monument stands for those affected to find quiet reflection of these scars, located blocks away from the U.S. Capitol.

  13. Fox News: Delaware mother charged after 4-year-old brings heroin to daycare

Delaware State Police say they have arrested the mother of a 4-year-old girl after the child allegedly brought heroin to a daycare center and started to pass it out to other classmates. Ashley Tull, 30, of Selbyville, Del., was charged with maintaining a drug property and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Authorities told WTXF that troopers and medical personnel responded to the daycare shortly before noon Monday after workers saw some of the children with small bags of an unknown substance. Investigators said the substance was tested at the police station and determined to be heroin. Police said the girl inadvertently brought the bags of heroin in a backpack that Tull had given her after the girl's regular backpack was ruined by a family pet Sunday night, according to police. Authorities said the child thought the packets were candy and began passing them out to other students. Several children were taken to area hospitals as a precautionary measure and were released after being examined. A total of 249 bags of heroin weighing 3.735 grams was located in the backpack, according to Delaware State Police. Tull, who has a 9-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, that live with her in addition to the 4-year-old, was released on $6,000 bail. Authorities say a no contact order was issued, and the children are currently in the custody of a relative.

    1. I think this is absurd and so un professional. A mother that has her kid bring heroine somewhere especially to a daycare is not right. What if a baby or toddler would have grabbed the heroine and started playing with it. The kid could have died, not only one kid but multiple. In my opinion the kids should be put in a rehab facility and the mother should be locked in prison forever and not let a bail.

      Delete
    2. The mother not only belongs in jail but she also belongs in a rehab center. It is obvious she is not fit to be a mother because she must have an addiction or a problem with heroin. The child should be put in a good, drug-free home, and the mother should be treated to health.

    3. This woman does not deserve the right to be called a mother. How do you even manage to get a backpack with 249 bags of heroin in it confused with a backpack that is not filled with drugs, let alone those 249 bags of heroin? That’s not the worse part the children though it was candy. Ingesting the heroin would mean it enters the bloodstream of the 4-year-old child resulting in death of multiple children. This woman endangered a whole school not only her child.

"EULESS, Texas — Carolyn Woahloe said what everybody was thinking: Some Texans are blaming her and fellow Liberians for the first Ebola case to be diagnosed in the United States." People are blaming this woman for causing an ebola outbreak because she's from Liberia and that is wrong. Woahloe fights back saying Liberia is not the reason an ebola outbreak has started in the U.S. "Health officials have said Duncan showed no sign of illness when he left Liberia, but someone asked whether Liberia’s borders should be closed to keep other infected people from leaving." Reporters say that others believe that closing boarders will help stop the outbreak. I believe that closing boarders and blaming others from ebola is wrong and should stop. Ebola is a natural disease that has come back and affected people. Having doctors find a cure instead of blaming people would help with the outbreak better.

  15. The tragedy of Ferguson has brought such an uproar to the country. As of August 9th the world had changed and not in a good way. A young 19 year old named Michael Brown and Dorian Johnson were walking on the road late at night in Ferguson, Missouri, around 9:30 when a white police officer named Darren Wilson fatally shot Brown because he refused to walk on the sidewalk. About a week later the Ferguson Police Department released a video of Brown stealing cigars from the convenient store, then pushing an employee down that had tried to stop him from leaving. Since then the shooting has caused an uproar and racial tensions between the black and white communities. There have been both peaceful and violent protests. With people being activists each day and standing up for what they believe is right. The city of Ferguson have called in the National Guard and Military officials to help with the event that had happened. About 20-30% of African Americans have lost all trust of the Police Department. My opinion of all this is that the Wilson should've done things differently and more professionally such as arresting Michael Brown for stealing rather than just shooting him six times and killing him.

I have heard that Brown asked the officer to stop and he had his arms up so the officer should have stopped and not shot him anymore.

  16. Fox News Detroit: Tigers Eliminated In Three-Game Orioles Sweep

Sunday, a gigantic amount of people flowed out of Comerica park disappointed after witnessing the Detroit Tigers 2014 MLB season come to a close. The Tigers were predicted to win the championship this year, however they lost three straight games to Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles took game three by only one point, by the score of 2-1, but it was enough to come out victorious. They Orioles have reached the AL Championship series for the first time since 1997. Matt Scherzer and Victor Martinez of the Tigers could bounce into free agency and some fans believe that the window for the Tigers to make the championship is now over. Baltimore opens up the ALCS on Friday at home against the Kansas City Royals who just won convincingly in 3-0 fashion over the Anaheim Angels. The Royals won the season series 4-3. The average attendance for Orioles games is around 30,000 people, however this is a huge game for the city of Baltimore, Maryland and expect more then 30,000. Maybe even a sell-out crowd at 45,971 capacity. Camden Yards is one of the greatest stadiums (in opinion), but expect a roar in the crowd as they are pumped for the series.

  17. Monday, October 6th, 2014, the well known NFL football team and the 2014 Super Bowl champions, once again, dominated another team! They played a strong game that lead to win, 27-17. Even though both teams played well, there seemed to be a little tension between two players. It was said that Pierre Garcon, a player from the RedSkins, tugged on Richard Sherman's dreadlocks, the Seattle Cornerback, in an attempt to separate in the first half. Sherman, however, was not upset by the fact that this happened. He supported Garcon's actions in a way very odd f or football players. He claimed that it was okay because when there is no opening, sometimes you have to do whatever you can to create an opening when running the ball. Richard Sherman showed this odd behavior of acceptance towards Pierre Garcon, it baffled most people because Sherman is known as a very self confident and high-ego man. He show much maturity by his reaction to Garcon this Monday night.

    1. I stopped being a fan of Richard Sherman for his comment last year right before the super bowl saying he was the best corner in this game, and just didn't show any class for all the crap he was talking. But having his dreads pulled and him not be upset and go great really gave me more respect for him as a player. Im glad to hopefully see him less cocky and just focus on the game.

  18. "An undercover police officer tricked a teenager with autism into buying pot for him, a lawsuit filed by the boy's parents alleges.

The 17-year-old, who isn't named in the lawsuit, was arrested with 21 other high school students on drug-dealing charges as part of a sting operation last December at Chaparral High School in Temecula, Calif., and neighboring schools. His parents, Catherine and Doug Snodgrass, on Wednesday announced a lawsuit in state Superior Court that seeks unspecified damages from the Temecula Valley School District, alleging negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress" from the huffingtonpost

I feel like the undercover cop should have found out the " main" people to get it from instead of going after this boy. but i however refuse to think he was directly targeted . i feel that his family are using his disability as a scapegoat so he doesn't have to pay for his actions. His parents should have taught him that drugs are bad and that she should have them unless he is prescribed by a doctor to have them. My brother, who is 21, has autism and he knows not to buy/sell/due drugs. I feel that this teen is using his disability as an excuse.

    1. I don’t think the word tricked is appropriate for this situation unless that was the officer’s intentions. The charges filed on this autistic child should not be determined whether or not he knew drugs were bad, but if his disability will play a role in his persecution. And for the 21 other high school students that were in the sting that do not have a disability will they be looked at as more intelligent, more conscious of their actions, and charged in a harsher manner.

  19. A short film released by the ISIS, ISIL, or otherwise known as the Islamic State on Friday shows the beheading of an British aid worker named Alan Henning. The executor of the film blames the United Kingdom for joining the U.S. bombing campaign against the terrorist group. Before the death of Alan Henning, he was given the opportunity to speak to the camera, which he used to reference a parliament that stated the decision to participate in coalition of more than 40 countries to take down the group. At the end of the video, ISIS threatens an American aid worker named Peter Kassig. There are many US officials studying this video and they have found no reason to believe that this video is not authentic. These murders demonstrate that there are no limits to the ISIS terrorists. The United Kingdom sent jets to begin flying over Iraq about a week ago, and on Tuesday dropped its first missiles on an ISIS weapon position and an armed pickup truck in Iraq.

  20. New york times patient dies from Ebola

Ebola is commonly known now in America jokes are made all over social media websites. People say that since we have well configured heath system that Ebola isn’t going to be much of a threat but is that true. The first American patient died early in the morning Wednesday October 8, 2014 more than a week after detected. His condition worsened days prior to his death. After Mr. Duncan arrived at the Dallas airport his condition raised questions and anxiety about how to contain the virus he carried some of the things he rode in like car and places got decontaminated dismantled and in some cases incinerated. The body of Mr. Duncan will be cremated to reduce any chance of the virus still being in the body after the body is cremated it will be returned to the family. Mr. Duncan first came to the hospital on September 25 feeling ill they sent him home because they were not aware of the chance he could be and Ebola patient he came back on the 28th when his condition worsened but think of how many people he could have possible came in contact with in those three days not even minding the five days prior to coming to the hospital that h could have contaminated the people around him they have 48 people under watch to catch the virus early in hopes that they can stop it form spreading anymore.

  21. A man, Thomas Eric Duncan, infected with the Ebola virus, took a public plane to Texas to receive help. He didn't let anyone know that he was infected. Now there is a possibility that other people on the plane, or people the man has had contact with, may have Ebola. I personally think that this act was selfish. He put a lot of people in danger for his own life, but at the same time, I also understand why he did what he did. If we put ourselves in his shoes, we would try to get help any way possible, but at the same time, I wouldn't want to spread it around.

In 1934 Merriam Webster’s Company created an accidental ghost word. A ghost word is a meaningless word that came to be through an error in lexicography. The accidental birth of this word allowed it to be inserted into the dictionary as “Dord”. The entry was supposed to be inserted as follows: D or d: abbreviation for density. This accidental dictionary child lived for thirteen years before it met its demise upon its discovery. Words can be collateral adjectives are words from different roots that are different than as they are described. Moving along, when it comes down to rhyming it all depends on pronunciation, language, and force. Perfect rhymes are when the last stressed vowel is the same and the words after it are the same. Most English words do not rhyme. The English language is very complex and I for one am having a hard time typing this. If you repeat a word over and over again you begin to experience jamais vu and the word feels new. The English language consists of silent letters, homophones, phantomnyms, and others. I can only imagine what it is like to be an English teacher, but I do have to admit their job seems very difficult; almost tedious. As a student when I think of English I think of reading and writing, but there’s more to it. English teachers have to read essays written by their students and look at every aspect of their work. To sum it up, there’s so much more to speaking a language fluently than we know.

  24. Mercedes-Benz believes it's built a self-driving semi-truck that could eventually help cut down on highway tragedies that kill thousands of drivers each year. The Future Truck 2025 can't navigate city streets autonomously like Google's fleet of cars, but is perfectly capable of holding its own on the open road — and that's where sleep-deprived truck drivers most often pose a threat to people driving smaller passenger vehicles. Using a combination of advanced dual cameras, radar sensors, and the latest blind-spot technology (Mercedes refers to the system as "Highway Pilot"), the Future Truck 2025 analyzes the road to get a sense of surrounding traffic and terrain. The "highway" part of that is critical; a driver is still required to get the truck onto the interstate and successfully merge into traffic.

There are pros and cons to this idea. If self driving trucks ever do emerge as an everyday thing, they could potentially take away tons of jobs. It could bring down the amount of fatalities and crashes though. This could most likely be the future

  25. Newsela - Gay marriage expands in U.S. after Supreme Court's order on Monday:

It is now the decision for lower state courts to decide on whether gay marriage should be legal in Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin due to the silence of John Roberts and the supreme court for the new term. Many of the states have been asking the supreme court to override the decisions because lower courts are in favor of legalizing gay marriage but the supreme court did not listen to their plead. Also, six states including Colorado, Kansas, North and South Caroline, West Virginia, and Wyoming also tried to ban same-sex marriage but the courts also ruled against it. This means same-sex marriage in these eleven states will likely be legalized soon.

Gay marriage still seems to be an issue going on around the country and many states still are against it being legalized. I don't understand why after all these years the concept of same-sex still seems to be a problem to America, it's always been here and it's never going away. Congress should just legalize it already so everyone can continue with their live already. People are making it seem like it's a bigger deal than it already is. It's truly upsets me how people are spending their time protesting and working so hard against something that doesn't even effect them. How is two guys or two girls getting married going to ruin your life? Can't pro-testers use that wasted energy to do something proactive for their communities and country? I understand for some people they use their religion as reasoning but even then it shouldn't matter. It still has no effect on anybody except for the people actually getting married. Not everybody has the same beliefs or follows the same religion, should America also ban the practice of other religions since you don't believe in it or you think its the "wrong" religion? Of course not - if you don't like it, don't do it; it should be as simple as that.

    1. I don't understand either why this is even an issue in the world we live in today. People feel so close minded when it comes to hot topics like these because it affects their religion. It isn't like you are being forced to marry someone of the same sex, so why is it such a problem to you? Why can't people just be allowed to be with who they want?

  26. The accused cop-killer Eric Frein described his deadly ambush with the Pennsylvania State Police in a chilling way in his journal found at his campsite in the woods. He wrote in his journal “Got a shot around 11 p.m. and took it.... He dropped. I was surprised at how quick. I took a follow-up shot on his head, neck area. He was still and quiet after that… Another cop approached the one I just shot. As he went to kneel, I took a shot at him and jumped in the door. His legs were visible and still” Frein was a military-reenactment buff and self-taught survivalist, he went on to describe how he fled in his Jeep and encountered a roadblock. With him, he had a AK-47, which he ditched after taking off, and a .308 caliber sniper rifle. Eric Frein was charged with killing Cpl. Bryon Dickson and wounding Trooper Alex Douglass at the Blooming Grove barracks. He was also charged with two counts of weapons of mass destruction because two bombs were also found in the woods where he was hiding. He was planning on making more bombs at his parents ‘house, and had many more weapons available to him, because his father was a army veteran. And, he has been at large for more than three weeks despite a massive manhunt that has cost millions.

  27. As a Miami Dolphins fan I can honestly say that I believe we are going in the right direction. If you would of asked anyone if they thought a Packers Dolphins game would have gone down to the last second they would of laughed. Miami dolphins have made adjustments and are now on the up coming. With the down fall of the patriots and the Jets still being the Jets Miami should be at the top of the division soon, maybe this or next year. In the game this past Sunday Miami’s defense kept them in the game while the offence struggled but in the second half Tannehill found his rhythm and Miami was coming. The defense could not hold off the Packers defense for too long so they did begin scoring but the Dolphins were right there with them. Joe Philbin coached this game horrible and I believe he deserves to be fired because he called a timeout right when the Packers were tired and gave them the chance to get a first down which they got. Also in the first half we gave up an easy field goal (three points) and went for a touchdown, we failed. So we gave up 3 free points and guess how much we lost by, that’s right 3.

  28. NBC News Repots- Charges Filed Against Ohio Teens in Sick "Ice Bucket" Prank

Five students were charged with criminal charges due to the "sick ALS “ice bucket challenge” prank that involved a bucket of urine and tobacco spit being dumped on the head of a special needs student in suburban Cleveland this summer, an incident that prosecutors said “humiliated” the boy." The juvenile group of 14-16 years of age, "They regularly associate with one another and, at times, engage in distasteful and sophomoric pranks," said First Assistant County Prosecutor Duane Deskins, who heads the office's Juvenile Division. She identifies that this was a completely separate instance, involving the divergence of moral and ethical conduct, she even states that the students feel remorse for their incorrect behavior to the special needs child. The victim has been "overwhelmed" and "humiliated" but the community has reached out to the special needs child and the family, including the offer of $10,000 to find the pranksters by Drew Carey(Host on 'Whose Line Is It Anyways?).
I feel that this was obviously immoral, and was detrimental to the mental state of the victim, regardless of the disability he/she suffers from. However, I was surprised to read that the five delinquents were put in Juvenile Hall, as bullying is now illegal, this in the context of laws, it is very productive to keep students from being detrimental to the mental and emotional state of the child, victim.

  29. Lately there have been many different forms of threats hitting America lately at once. With the scare of Ebola, the threats of Isis, and the borders that are making these two able to come and affect America, people are saying that things need to be done to better protect us Americans. But my feeling is that there’s much overreaction the deaths caused by these two threats can be counted on one hand. We have been told on the news that the government has an “obligation” to Americans to protect them from Isis, Ebola, or any other threats. With this being said something we hear about every day, heart disease, is the leading killer of Americans today. But then with this “obligation” to save American lives they tried to regulate our food and what we eat and the same people that are asking for protection are outraged on the restriction of food. Another showing of this would be gun-control, and people get upset when we are having our government to control on the use of firearms, but gun deaths make up over 30,000(88 per day) deaths per year, which is well over the number of deaths caused by Ebola or Isis.

  30. Kind Campaign: How kindness can put a stop to bullying

Everyone has been a victim of some sort of bullying. Now a day’s it is common for bullying to be present in schools. Teachers and other adults usually just tell kids to suck it up and ignore them. It is not always easy to ignore a bully. Bullies mess with your head and make you feel powerless. Any little remark can bring down a persons self esteem. On September 9th, 2013, a twelve year old girl, Rebecca Sedwick had taken her life because of the fact that she had been bullied to the point that she could not take it anymore. She was a victim of bullying, and like many others, she thought that taking her life was the only thing she could do to stop it. Lauren Paul and Molly Thompson are the co-founders of the Kind Campaign. They created this campaign to address the harmful and ever-present phenomenon of girl-against-girl bullying in particular. They teach them that kindness can stop bullying. All it takes is a bit of effort. They also have a documentary, “Finding Kind”, that has been shown in over three hundred schools nationwide.

  31. Marine Parks Wrestling with Change (newsela)

Ever since the uproar following the documentary "Blackfish" last year, marine parks like SeaWorld have been under the spotlight for their extremely inhumane treatment of the animals kept there. These animals kept in captivity have under gone torturous scenarios such as extremely confined cages and being forced to perform shows for audiences. Action is finally underway though, thanks to much protest. Breeding for whales and dolphins are planned to cease in many parks, and larger tanks are going under constructions soon. They are also treating the animals with more respect, trying to keep them with companions and some aquariums are even stopping/cutting down on the amount of show these docile creatures perform for the public.

I feel like this is a huge turning point in the treatment of these amazing creatures. People are starting to realize that training them for our entertainment is wrong, and that they are meant to be free. Maybe in the future they will all be treated equally around the world with large enclosures and a more free environment.
